I watch anime, I guess.
Here's a rough guide to how I score things:
10 - Some of the best Anime has to offer. Well produced, always relevant, with flawless execution, and demonstrations of excellence in storytelling and/or humour.
9 - Some of the best the genre has to offer. Excellent execution of central ideas, with strong storytelling and/or humour.
8 - Very strong in the execution of storytelling and/or humour. Enjoyable, but ultimately, does little to be truly exceptional.
7 - Shows that are solidly entertaining, but unexceptional or flawed in their execution and techniques.
6 - Shows that are mildly entertaining, but wholly unexceptional, and/or deeply and inherently flawed in execution.
5 - Shows that are not quite bad, but completely forgettable, and generally not worth the time they take to watch.
4 - Shows that are bad, potentially boring throughout, almost certainly not worth the time they take to watch, and/or so deeply flawed that they heavily impact the enjoyability of the show as a whole.
My scores will be biased in favour of cute/funny slice-of-lives, and generally, against dramas. There are exceptions (Yuru Yuri San Hai, K-On!), but the best way to interpret this is: a 7-8 is what I would give to an average comedy (Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku, Kiniro Mosaic), while a 6-7 is what I would give an average drama (Code Geass, Chunibyo). This means a 9+ generally indicates an especially good comedy, while an 8+ indicates an especially good drama. At the same time, however, for combinations of the two, I may try to balance out my score. A 7-8 drama-comedy is more likely to be there because of good comedic execution than good drama (Kotoura-san), while a 9-10 drama is likely to have excellent dramatic execution (Anohana).
( )* - A tag for shows that have the potential to receive a higher score, but are set back by a significant flaw in execution, that ultimately, affects the impact and enjoyability of the show, but does not heavily impact the quality of the show. Score in brackets indicates the score the show would receive if the offending flaw is removed.
s+ - Tag for special and extra episodes. Indicates that, taken as extensions of the original shows, they meet a similar or equivalent quality.
s- - Tag for special and extra episodes. Indicates that, taken as extensions of the original shows, they meet a lower quality.
Note on dropped / on-hold: I tend to avoid dropping shows entirely, and what I tend to do, if put off by something early on or bored, is to put it on-hold, and maybe come back to it later. As a result, 'on-hold' can be interpreted as 'dropped for the meantime, but I'm not wholly uninterested in continuing,' whereas 'dropped' is reserved for shows that I have no intention whatsoever of continuing.
