I have not seen the rest of Magi, but I already know that Sinbad will be my favorite character when I do. Also, this review may contain spoilers so read at your own risk.
Story-8
Overall really enjoyed the story and would have given it a 10 if it were 24 episodes instead of just 13. Some of the character development was rushed and it felt like the story could have been explained a bit better at times. Like I mentioned I have not watched the rest of the Magi series but I do take into consideration that this is not the main story of Magi, instead
...
it is just a spin-off of the original series that is used to explain one of the characters. I wished they would have explained Drakon's side a little better and offered up more explanation behind (SPOILER INCOMING, SKIP THE NEXT BIT IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED) Drakon being betrayed by his brother. (ANOTHER SPOILER INCOMING) I also think that the part where they were down in the canyon or whatever it was called in the last country they visited was the worst part and was kind of boring.
Art-9
Art style is different and refreshing. I especially enjoyed the scenes in which characters were embarrassed/awkward and they turned into a white shapeless figure. It added a nice change of pace to an anime that on the outside, with its somewhat dark themes, would be really dark. I also enjoyed how colorful and creative the art was. Another note is that the backgrounds were always really good.
Sound-6
Eh, not something that was a strong suit of this anime but at the same time wasn't something that dragged down this anime either. There were a couple of scenes in which characters were speaking and they could be heard loud and clear even though they were talking in a lower/quieter tone of voice and/or were far away from those who they were talking to. This was not a big problem for me but at the same time, it did throw me off a little bit.
Character-8
Again, this would be a 9/10 if it were 24 episodes instead of 13. Sinbad is easily one of my favorite characters in all of anime. But besides explaining his backstory, the rest of the cast is kind of just thrown in there. There is a little background on Drakon, Ja'far, Hinahoho, and Mystras but just surface-level information not enough to really understand them. and then for the rest of the crew Rurumu, the two other assassins, and the girl they picked up in the female ran country there is no background whatsoever. This would not have been as big if they didn't play fairly big roles in this show. My love for Sindbad is what boosted this rating so much because the rest of the characters are kind of lame. I just realized I forgot to mention the one fairy guy who guides Sinbad(I'm too lazy to look up the characters). I enjoyed his character and I didn't mind that his backstory wasn't really explained because it added to his mysterious mystique as well as it felt like you were figuring out who this guy was right alongside Sinbad. Also just remembered that I wished Drakon's story was given more attention. He had a really interesting story and I would have liked to know more about his relationship with the princess as well as what happened when he returned home.
Enjoyment-10
I enjoyed the hell out of this anime. Just binge-rewatched this anime a couple nights ago and it made me laugh and feel good which are things that are sometimes hard to come by. When I say that this anime made me laugh I mean I burst out laughing and when I say it made me feel good I had a smile on my face from start to finish.
