for my reference. no one asked for this, i'm just a mahou shoujo nerd
just my opinions don't be mad pls
(only includes shows i've completed)
Princess Tutu – don't be put off by the title! this is a meta, fairytale masterpiece (in my opinion). it blends its cheerful and darker tones perfectly, both parts adorable and existential, and slowly subverts the classic magical girl tropes to become something a lot greater. this is my favourite anime.
Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero – every time someone says this is a madoka clone i die inside. to me they stand on equal ground. it handles dark themes without taking away from the characters' likability, which is my big complaint with pmmm. the ending is the only dodgy aspect in my opinion, but i'm invested enough to check out the prequel/sequel so i'm not too bothered by that as it stands. in contrast to the suffering of pmmm fuelling despair, yuyuyu's suffering fuels hope. (oh no. i've turned into komaeda nagito.)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica – this show is very good, and it's definitely worth watching. in fact, if you liked magical girl shows as a child, you are in the best position possible to watch this. BUT! i can probably talk for hours about how i adore the concept (and its execution) and yet literally hate almost every character. i don't think it's a masterpiece, i suppose i just prefer shows where i can empathise more deeply with the protagonists. as it stands i don't care about whether they suffer, only if it's interesting. (and it gets very interesting)
Tokyo Mew Mew – i never watched sailor moon as a kid, so tmm is my quintessential magical girl show. it was my first animu, so a lot of my preferences likely come in part from this and whatever else i was into at the time. five rainbow-coloured animal girls fighting to save the world from aliens, an ending that blew my mind as a kid and FOOD NAMES! this is very much a kids' show, but if you're in the mood for some classic mahou shoujo fun, i think tmm has got you covered.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt – in the mood for vulgar, stupid fun? psg is perfect for that. it's outlandish af, but that's what it sets out to be, so more power to it! some episodes are misses and the ending is... abrupt? but i enjoyed it very much overall.
Uchuu Patrol Luluco – does luluco count?? i think luluco counts. kinda. it's a super cute short series by trigger. had a lot of great comedic and cheesy (but sweet) moments.
Shakugan no Shana – my rating on mal is very very tenuous here bc i watched this anime when i was maybe 11-12. i enjoyed it a lot at the time (and it had SICK ops and eds tbh), but if i went back now i could maybe see shana's tsundere-ness annoying me. i don't remember everything that happened, but i had fun.
Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R – anyone remember the miko miko nurse song?? that's why i watched this. the art is cute but the show itself is just average, nothing special.
