Because you played the game, or had watched the show before. The point of the show, as it always has been, was to reel in new kids to the game franchise.

Yeah, but the kids need someone to connect to, you know? The reason he's always asking "what pokemon is that", constantly questioning the obvious, is because the kid sitting at home probably doesn't remember that the weird blue shelled turtle thing on the screen is is a Squirtle, unlike the adult fan.
