My update policy:
I'm usually prompt with updating my anime list, except I don't really bother marking each episode "as I go". Usually, this means I'll only mark shows when I start, when I finish, when I drop, or when I put things on hold. For long-running shows, I'll probably mark arbitrary milestones though (usually 25 episodes, or every time I decide to put the series on hold).
For my manga/novels list, it's a greyer area since publishing schedules and divisions tend to vary more. If I know I'm reading volumes, I'll update after each volume. If it's not divided in volumes, I'll pick arbitrary milestones (usually 25 chapters, or every time I decide to put the series on hold).
