Some spoilers, no big ones
I usually don't write reviews, but this is special case. This series tries to present itself to be realistic and to present advantages of different regimes (as long as it isn't religion, then you are stereotypical bad guy). I would say that it handles it pretty well as long as you don't look at population numbers and other small details. While I wouldn't put this as a major critique of different shows, but since this show tries to sell realism as it's selling point, then it is a problem. Also space battles. Just no. It tries to have choke points, space

rivers and every other shit we can find on Earth, but in SPACE. Let's just say you shouldn't think too hard about it. And while some tactics are interesting, space is 3D, not 2D. Okay, what about philosophy of the show? That was actually handled quite good and represented advantages and disadvantages of both regimes, autocracy and representative democracy. Sadly they completely ignore ideas of nationalism, since nationalism died out after some nuclear war on Earth. Which I doubt would ever happen, but okay. So this conflict of two ideas is happening in a vacuum, devoid of nationalism and religon is either a one-liner or Terrarism, which is just religious fanatics. While I as a atheist hate religion, that is not fair representation at all. Religion brought stability, order, morality, but here they just are stereotypical villain organisation. Democratic and aurocratic ideas were thought trough quite deeply and forced me to think about them, so I would say author did a good job in this regard.
Characters
Since there is a lot of them, quite a few are flat characters. I personally found Yang really boring, since he is just Gary stu. He doesn't want to work, but since he wants to get free uni of history, he joined army and became the greatest admiral of Alliance. Reinhard is more interesting, trying to bring justice to galaxy under his wise rule. Julian started like absolutely boring subordinate of Yang but gets some character development. Rubinsky was interesting, but nothing that special. Oberstein was intuguing and easily one of the most memorable characters in show. With exception Hilda women in this show were boring, only Hilda being really proactive politician. And Reunteal with his pride, event though his pride came out of nowwhere, and view of his life is my favorite character
Then there was a lot of minor villains who were stereotypically evil. Main of them is arcibishop De Ville that at one point presents himself as someone who simply uses Terrarism for power but then absolutely stupidly attacks fortified mansion with his minions. Why? If he isn't religious fantatic, why did he risk his life?
So what would I give this series? It's not a perfect series certainly, but it has a value. It will make you think about things you would never think about. Sadly a lot of early episodes are slow and boring. Good idea, but execution could have been done a lot better, 8/10
