This anime is absolutely a joy to watch with its deadpan humor, over the top imbecility and (sometimes) decent animation, so I was shocked to read through the reviews and find out there wasn't much love and excitement for a sequel as I would've hoped. Some reviews are are very off the mark with their very deep judging - at this point I shouldn't be shocked. MAL continues to be the definite internet pitstop for teenage pseudo-intellectualism.
Anime used to be the medium that celebrated difference, explosiveness, excentricism and everything that mainstream media wasn't. Growing up as someone who was not excentric by any stretch of
...
the imagination, it was actually a weird culture for me to be (partly) part of, as I didn't see myself reflected on any of the people who were into the medium as much as I was - but I certainly loved how it wasn't bound by conventional rules.
Isekai Ojisan is written like a long joke that you're privy too. Sometimes it bashes the genre so much it makes Konosuba feel like a regular Isekai, sometimes it follows the rules perfectly until it decides not to. The point is, that's not the point. This is not a show to analyze or breakdown. It's just a dumb show where you can tangeably feel the author having way too much fun. Don't think too much about it. It's just Anime, in the best way possible.

Look at how they did my boy!
Katsura is undoubtedly my favorite Mangaka, but he is unfortunately cursed by the anime gods, probably as a way to balance out his inhumane capacity of pumping out monthly release Manga art quality on a weekly basis. As such, every single anime that has been produced based off his work falls incredibly short of capturing the magic of the source material properly. And DNA² might just be the most egregious example.
While this particular Manga is no masterpiece when it comes to the story and its development, Katsura's ability to convey complex emotion through his art is unparalleled in
...
the Manga world. He'll draw a panel that you could frame and look at for the rest of your life. It doesn't stop there though - he has a great sense of movement and action and understands how to do sexy tastefully - truly making him one of the most consistent mangaka of his time.
This anime adaption, while quite faithful, removes all of those qualities about Katsura's art. What you're left is with a very confusing story without the subtle emotion, gorgeous art, or beautiful women to distract you from it; it pained me to read 'madhouse' in the credits of this anime.
Rewatching this series was hard - each scene reminded me of how much I wasn't getting compared to the Manga. I dont know if I can recommend the anime as a standalone work, but as a Manga companion, it might be fun to see some of your favorite scenes animated.

Panty & Stocking: Still a unique masterpiece
For the past 14 years, I have remembered and revisited certain scenes from Panty & Stocking dearly. When the show came out in 2010, I was 23 years old, and I wondered if its crass humor would still appeal to me now almost at 38. I spent most of this year rewatching old shows I once placed in my 3x3 (s/o Trash Taste), and I'm happy to write that this show held up better than I expected.
Coming to Mal, I was surprised that it had so many negative reviews. These talked about the series crass humor, about how unfunny
...
and low brow it was. I'm coming to it from a different perspective.
All industries, no matter how fun and exciting they might seem at first, are bogged down by some type of rules that you end up following (smnaybe even unconsciously) in order to be able to work on it or maximize your profits. Some artists find solace in finding other like minded people who are also bored with having to appease an audience. Ir order to relax or de-stress or keep your creativity alive, sometimes you brainstorm terrible ideas where you can't help to laugh at how idiotic they sound. An exercise of "what if" if you're allowed to go outside of norms.
PanSto is that energy, condensed.
It is unapologetically Gainax, and almost like a fever dream. It is purposefully crass, forever feeling like the script was written by writers in a room competing to see who could pitch the most outrageous ideas. It's animators and writers fighting back to make their job fun again.
The mixed medium, the over the top reactions, the incredible soundtrack, the buffoonery and unhingedness of its characters, the art style, they all play together to recreate what if feels like being hyperactive. It's a bowl full of the sweetest sugary cereal as a kid.
Even if you don't like this show or think it's not for you, I hope you can appreciate this clear labor of love from Gainax. As for me, I guess this rewatch renovated its place in my 3x3. :)

I have spent my last 30 years watching anime. I've watched my share of bad shows, and while were just bearable, some had at least one fun component. Tower of God, however has no redeeming quality about it.
Had you told me this story was written by ChatGTP, I would have believed you. Just a toss of the most generic ideas, characters and world you could think of. It's sad anime salad. The show lacks personality, cohesion, direction, creativity and even decent production value. Every moment seems like it happened completely out of the blue and it leads to another moment that feels even more disjointed
...
than the previous one. Is this the show that was hyped to oblivion?
Should you watch it? No. But the good part about how bad it is, is that even if you decide to do so, the first episode will be enough to put anyone with any type of exposure to good anime to drop it on the spot.
I like to think this was on purpose. Crunchyroll made a terrible anime just so we could drop our expectations. If that's the case, congratulations Crunchyrool! You certainly have outdone yourselves.
