Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S

When I watched Sailor Moon S, I was reminded much of Revolutionary Girl Utena (though if memory serves me correctly, Sailor Moon S came around before Utena). There are several aspects of this particular season which simply scream Utena. First of all, Sailor Moon S is darker than the previous two seasons, and the Death Busters seem much more evil than the Black Moon Clan and the Dark Kingdom, primarily because the Death Busters seek to destroy the universe instead of conquer it. The darker mood of it all strongly mirrors the dark and somewhat mysterious mood that surrounds Utena (especially in later seasons of Utena). Likewise, both series feature very mysterious characters. The three new sailor senshi which come about in this season are very hard to figure out - Are they truly good or bad? Very much like the Utena characters, which are simply gray instead of black or white. Several members of the Death Busters and two of the new sailor senshi are only seen in shadow form before they are seen clearly, much like the shadow girls in Utena. And, last but not least, roses are featured as a strong point in both of these stories. I don't find it surprising that Sailor Moon S and Utena were directed by the same man.

There are a lot of aspects which make both Furuba and Ouran similar. First of all, both feature reverse harem (one girl around a lot of guys). They are also romantic comedies. If you liked Fruits Basket but wanted a Tohru with a more realistic personality, you might enjoy Haruhi in Ouran. Likewise, if you thought Tamaki was a bit too oblivious and air-headed, you might Yuki in Fruits Basket. Fans of Kyo will adore Kaoru and Hikaru.

Both feature a masculine girl for a main character, lots of male characters drawn to look attractive to female viewers, a big and beautifully built academy, and focus on friendship and growing up. Roses play a significant role in both stories, and nearly everybody has some decent character development.

Both feature magical girls, romance, saving the world, cute talking sidekicks, and some pretty awesome attacks. They also feature some pretty cool transformation sequences (more so the Sailor Moon transformations) and neat power-ups. Kero-chan is so kawaii!!!

Cardcaptor Sakura is more "upbeat" and "shojo-ish" than D.N.Angel, which is darker and has more aspects of shonen, but both feature a cast of characters with magical powers. There are also quite a few characters with feathery wings. Plus, like D.N.Angel, almost all of the magical characters which appear in Cardcaptor Sakura are boys (despite the fact that the main one is a girl).

Both of these are magical girl animes which follow the lives of lovable girls who transform into magical girls to save the day. They also feature male characters with some special abilities.

Magic Knight Rayearth

Both have Mokona in them and both of them have a fairly epic plot. In Magic Knight Rayearth, three girls are transported into some magical world that they must save. In Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, three men become allies as they travel through dimensions for different purposes (and there's also a princess who tags along). To be honest, it seems like Magic Knight Rayearth is the shojo version of Tsubasa, and Tsubasa is the shonen version of Magic Knight Rayearth. However, both contain lots of elements that will appeal to fans of both shojo and shonen.

Princess Tutu and Revolutionary Girl Utena have quite a bit in common. Both have the feel of a "modern fairy tale" and start off feeling like your typical, light-hearted shojo or magical girl series. However, both eventually obtain a darker atmosphere, become something new, and make themselves stand out in certain ways. Tutu is more family friendly and has more of a "magical girl" feel to it, while Utena is more intense and has more of a "girl warrior" feel to it. The heroines of both stories mature quite a bit throughout the story and learn concepts such as love, romance, friendship, self-sacrifice, and selflessness. Both series also have a lot of plot twists to the point that you aren't exactly sure which characters are the "good guys" and which are the "bad guys" until you're practically at the end. Love them or hate them, these series certainly aren't forgettable.

I'm actually quite surprised that Sailor Moon isn't already on Princess Tutu's recommendation list (and vice versa). Ahiru and Usagi are very similar to each other. Both of these girls are pretty clumsy and make some rather strange mistakes, and both find themselves falling for a boy. Both must work to get their love's memories back, and they transform into magical girls to fight and save the day while somehow balancing schoolwork and social lives on top of that.

Both of these feature young ones trying to become the best trainer they can be. Only main differences are that in Pokemon, the main character is a boy, but in Angelic Layer, the main character is a girl. Also, in Pokemon, they fight with little monsters, but in Angelic Layer, they fight with customizable action figure/doll gladiators. Angelic Layer is far shorter than Pokemon, though.
