I actually use a spreadsheet for my actual list with critical ratings that are defined as follows:
8 - 10: Excellence / Transcendence / Brilliance. Symbolizes a work that goes above and beyond in some way (be that general brilliance, perfection in some way, etc.).
7: Great. The magnitude of the strengths outweigh the magnitude of the weaknesses with absolute ease. A noteworthy and compelling piece of media.
4: Solid. The strengths outweigh the weaknesses by a decent margin. It’s a successful piece of media but isn’t consistent enough or doesn’t reach the heights necessary to be something noteworthy.
1: Bad. The strengths are outweighed by the weaknesses by a significant margin. Maybe a couple okay aspects but that’s about it. Often actively inept.
There are no set exact quality levels for each score as media operates on a gradient. Everything that comes with that applies to these scores.
In addition, my MAL does not include my Plan To Watch, On Hold, and Dropped lists (only Completed and Watching).
Each show on my actual list receives two ratings (one for my critical score and one for personal enjoyment). This list is based on my critical scores, enjoyment scores can be found on my enjoyment list (myanimelist.net/profile/ekurdmi).
The rating system is all about weighing the strengths of a work against the weaknesses. A work can be deeply flawed but it if is brilliant enough aside from that it can still get a great score or can be completely flawless and just not reach the heights necessary for a great score. In most cases, scores are given to a series as a whole rather than individual parts (exceptions being when I consider the parts drastically different). These strengths and weaknesses are found by analyzing the ambitions of the show and their execution. I do this through asking the question:
How meaningful, powerful, and distinctive are the ideas the work is trying to convey and how effectively do the base elements of the work reflect and build off each other in order to realize these ideas?
Favorite Anime as listed is based n a combination of Critical scores and Personal Enjoyment.
