༺★ Welcome to my profile! ★༻

Hello there, visitor! It's still a mess, but feel free to browse through my profile. I'm more than happy to discuss the shows I finished or am currently watching, so you may drop any remarks or messages in the comments below. Anime and manga suggestions are very much appreciated as well!

𝙰𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚖𝚢𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚏:

I live in Southeast Asia. Despite the fact that I'm very talkative, English is only my second language, so apologies for my poor writing as I have a very limited vocabulary. Anime has been a major part of my life. I started when I was young, the time when I only immersed myself in shoujo and romance anime. Nowadays, I've been exploring genres I haven’t tapped much before. Hence, I've been consuming a lot of mainstream seasonal anime lately, regardless of their themes.

𝙼𝚢 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚏𝚒𝚕𝚎:

I like to decorate my profile with GIFs I created every time I finished a show. In fact, this is the first time I tried the modern 'About Me' design feature because I’ve been using the classic BBCode style in the past. Another thing you might notice in my profile is that I write excessively detailed notes. These habits of mine come from my love of archiving. Plus, I find doing them so therapeutic and enjoyable that it has become a hobby of mine.

UPDATE: OMG, I WON!! Thank you so much, admins! 💗

Out of the 15 seasonals I'm watching, I chose to feature "The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You" because I didn't expect to like it very much. And I'm loving all the characters so far. I wrote a short preliminary review below. All the images imported are from the OP and ED of the show.

༺★ The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You ★༻

As someone new to harem anime, I find this show very enjoyable. It doesn’t have the usual bothersome elements of harem, such as having a seemingly directionless romantic plotline. Here, it's very clear that he is destined to be together with the 100 girls. The god of the shrine kind of laid down everything already when he revealed the prophecy about soulmates. This left the MC with no choice but to adhere to it.

Rentarou is a great protagonist—he’s not only kind, funny, and romantic but assertive too. It’s apparent that he's capable of character growth, unlike other harem MCs. This paves the way for a smooth progression of the story.

The First Girlfriends

This adaptation only covers his encounters with the first five girls based on the OP and ED. As of episode 4, the last two were still not introduced. Hakari, the girl who isn't shy about showing her affection, and Karane, the tsundere archetype but with a low breaking point, were the first to arrive. It was a wise decision to introduce them at the same time as it gave us a clear idea of the show's direction from the very start. Shizuka, the third girlfriend, is timid and incapable of normal communication yet had the courage to tell Rentarou her feelings for him. Honestly, I found the MC’s pursuit of Shizuka to be dubious because of the cheating undertone. However, this isn’t unexpected considering the plot. I guess it’s fine so long as it’s consensual, although Hakari and Karane didn't take it well the first time they heard about it. Aside from the romantic progression between him and the girls, we’ll also be seeing how the girlfriends interact and manage to coexist in his life.

Thank you for visiting!

I saw you watch a lot of romance anime perhaps you would like to share your favorite romance anime?
Vaturna Dec 22, 2023 8:00 AM
It took me over a week this time as well. The two week break was unexpected, but I'm absolutely fine with taking it more slowly. Sorry, the reply got much, much longer than I expected, I didn't want to cut anything. It always looks a bit weird to have these massive walls of text in our comment sections, but it doesn't really bother me. 😅

I had to look it up in my browser history, but when I ultimately decided to register on MAL I got inspired by an older episode of the "Trash Taste" podcast (It's not really something I watch regularly, in case you're interested it was Trash Taste #34), where they went through each others anime lists to discuss their scores. It feels very magical when people come together to passionately talk about anime. Even though tastes can be very different and discussions can become very heated, I like to think that anime and entertainment in general is a large safe space where people quickly get angry at each other but forget everything as soon they switch topic. It's not that easy in reality of course, but I like to believe it that way. I'm still prefering more positive discussions while keeping my distance from anyone who's throwing insults around and is only looking for a fight. Does that make sense? 🤨
While it's a bit weird to make everything you watch public, I wanted to have my own public list to make it easier to start conversatons. It was originally just intended for people I regularly talk to outside of MAL, but I see myself becoming more open lately.

It's only a month since I talked about it, but I already decided to no longer limit myself to 10 favorite anime. I happened to rewatch some of my (9) rated anime and desperately wanted to promote them on my profile without losing any of the old favorites. There are now 20 favorites on my profile and it definitely feels like the right decision. While it feels like an unfair advantage towards normal MAL users, it gives a much better impression of my tastes to anyone who looks at my favorites but isn't bothered to look up my full list. It would be cool if some of the MAL Supporter-only features would be available to everyone.

Recently I was looking for some anime inspiration and found Tamako Market in your list which looked really interesting. I watched some snippets of the anime the other day to get a first impression and just couldn't stop smiling at all the characters and the friendly atmosphere. I love when characters like Tamako are really passionate about a profession/hobby (in this case making mochi). It also looks so full of emotions and I like the small pieces of romance in it.
There is also the movie, but I don't really know what to expect from it since I only read a few descriptions. When it comes to romance, I always fear that there is too much unnecessary drama build into it, like a love rival, break-ups, or some extremely painful misunderstandings, but I don't think I have to be worried here. It generally sounds more like a story about growing up, especially with Mochi planing to move to Tokyo and Tamako having to sort out her feelings about everything.
Now that I hyped myself up for the anime, I just have to find time to actually watch it. I currently have one other anime I want to finish rewatching first, but it's unlikely that it has to wait on my Plan to Watch for very long now that I have some time between the Fall and Winter season. You don't have to, but do you remember anything about it you want to share?

When I started watching The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior, I really enjoyed the cool villainess backstory and how it's been presented (that's why I chose it for my design), but like most anime with that premise it became a lot less relevant after the first episodes. I still liked the princess being kind and determined, everyone being fond of her, as well as all the emotional moments in the series. She also has some special powers from being the otome villainess but the anime doesn't lean too much on it since other characters have special abilities as well. I didn't like everything about the story, but I enjoyed it.
I think it manages the theme slightly better than some of the other villainess isekai. One of the continuing themes is that the princess fears that she might actually turn evil herself since the otome game only really started when the villainess was 18 years old. The explaination why she feels that way felt a bit flat to me, but it still made for some nice emotional moments.

But no matter how many I watch, I keep getting excited for all these villainess themed stories 😁
While I don't particuarly enjoy evil characters, I really like the illusion of being evil. Like when characters have a bad reputation or look very intimidating at first glance, but if you look more closely they're actually nice people. Also, the otome-game trope, when the main character has some special knowledge about the other characters or future events, is really cool. Unfortunately, I think that villainess stories often fail at keeping up the evil appearance, especially when the main character just gets reincarnated into the role. Demon lord stories are usually much better at this.
I have some hopes that Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord (anime starts airing next month) might do a better job at keeping up the villainess persona. Yumiella the main character has a bit of an awkward personality which looks more intimidating to the outside, but from what I've read it's not unlikely that she loses her villainess flair after the first half of the story as well. I'll probably enjoy it anyway, even if I get disappointed and she's just a regular overpowered protagonist.

MyAnimeList already has been my go-to anime database long before I registered, especially when I started looking up upcoming anime of a season. I only started watching seasonal anime in 2021, before that I watched anime a lot less frequently.
I think my original reason for becoming MAL Supporter was just to change my About Me background, but I'm definitely very satisfied with the website even though it has some flaws. I personally also quite liked the latest updates with Conversation View and Profile Statistics. Sometimes I wish they had a better system for adding new stuff + more moderators, I sometimes add lightnovel series I've read or I'm interested in that weren't in the database yet. (lightnovel/manga entries take very long to get approved; I have to go to a third party website to check if something is already submitted; there is no way I can look up my pending submissions)

In The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior, that "alternative timeline" is generally the same concept as in some other isekai like I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss, that the main character has knowledge about the characters and events from what happened in the otome game they played. The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen has a nice spin to it though in how the main character is much more emotionally invested in the events from the game.

I hope I can help you discover some new series you might like. Feel free to ask if you have a question about a particular topic in an anime you're interested in, I usually try not to go much into details otherwise. By the way, do you have any preferences regarding spoilers in how much you seek them out or try to avoid them?
Personally, when I'm interested in an anime and I'm not already hooked from reading the description or seeing a PV, I really like looking up spoilers to know that to expect. Sometimes a few details are enough to answer my questions, but sometimes I listen to someone explaining it to me for half an hour or watch a lot of clips. If I'm still unsure I also sometimes just check out how I like the final episode(s). It depends a bit on the genre, the threshold when I stard looking up spoilers for a mystery is a lot higher. I definitely found some gems I would have otherwise not given a second chance, but I always feel like it's a weird way of doing it. 🤣🤣

Too bad that your Photoshop version has stopped working. 😑 I never really looked much into those, but I can't deny that I thought about using some cracked version myself once or twice. There are a lot of plug-ins you can add to GIMP for some of the more fancy Photoshop-like features that are otherwise missing, but I don't really know most of them.
Vaturna Nov 21, 2023 1:29 PM
Thanks a lot for the replies. ❤ I'm always very happy that you take your time to write so much, I really appreciate your interest and hearing about what you're currently doing on MyAnimeList. Glad you enjoy deciding your top 20 favorites.

It's pretty funny that I learned something new about the website from you again 🤣:
Until now, I had no idea that you could change the order of your favorites in the profile settings, I never tried dragging them around and for some reason never noticed that small "Update Order" button. I always just thought that they're sorted by the date you added them. Though I only switched to MAL in February 2023, I'm surprisingly oblivious to a lot of MAL features. (I used offline spreadsheets before that)

I've thought about changing the colors for Watching/Reading, Completed, On-Hold, Dropped and Plan to Watch, but I just really like the original colors because they're easy to recorgnize and everyone is used to them. Some other color schemes I've seen looked really cool though. Some time in the future I definitely see myself using more of the Supporter perks, I only recently started adding more than 10 favorite characters. It's hard to describe why and I'm kind of taking my profile page too seriously, but features that other people don't have access to, like color schemes and more favorites, are things I don't want to do half-heartedly. But I can just take my time with it since I don't plan to stop being a MAL Supporter anytime soon.

Also thanks for complimenting on my previous About Me entry.
The featured anime was an isekai called The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior. It's been quite a nice anime even though it didn't managed to deliver on everything I hoped for. With my design I tried to capture that sinister aestetic from the alternative timeline where the main character would have been a villainess.
All my profile designs seem to be about isekai so far, but I'm just a huge isekai and fantasy fan in general so I want my profile to reflect that.

I'm currently using GIMP for making my designs, because it's the software I'm most familiar with. It's also free and it has all the features I need. Always wanted to use Adobe Photoshop, but the license is just way too expensive for someone like me who'd only use it on occasion and not professionally. I don't really draw much myself but I love to edit things.

The animations from A Girl & her Guard Dog needed some time for me to get used to, but I didn't pay much attention to them for the most part. I'm generally a fan of more unusual romance like having an age gap, but Keiya's character from the first few episodes just didn't work for me. Incidentially I was really happy over the voice actor of Keiya, he has a really nice voice.
Oh, you have Umehara, Yuuichirou in your favorites as well?! ❤❤ I personally became more aware of him only recently from his roles in The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 and Spy Classroom. Haven't watched Goblin Slayer so far. Did you have a particular role you liked him in?
Vaturna Nov 11, 2023 12:04 PM
I forgot disabling my notes for The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons, thanks! 😅
Good luck with completing more of your notes. Don't worry about me, if you're happy with your notes that's all that matters.

Even though I'm a paying MAL Supporter, I still don't know how I want to fill out my 20 favorites limit. 10 favorites is just a really nice number and you don't have to scroll to see all of them. With Manga/Lightnovels I don't even have 20 different series I'd like enough. Currently I'm just keeping the option open in case I want to add more in the future.

I've already participated last season in the Summer About Me contest (using this design: https://i.imgur.com/VDA2pXF.png) and got 1 Month MAL Supporter. (Still have the gift code lying around in my inbox, waiting for me to use it or gift it to someone else 🤣) My main goal always was to just get creative, practice some editing and share my result with others.
I'm already planning to join for Winter if they organize the contest again. I'll make my final choice which anime I use after the first episodes are released, but I expect my design to be either about Surgeon Elise or Fluffy Paradise. They both sound like something I'd definitely enjoy.

A lot of people got interested in the About Me contest because of the bagde. I don't like to admit it, but I got a bit frustrated about the large amount of low-effort designs that came with it, making it a bit harder to find the more original entries. On the other hand I wouldn't have seen many of the designs I liked if not for the badge (starting with yours). I'd expect them to offer a badge again for the Winter contest, I think it worked out pretty well.
fabiandewa19 Nov 9, 2023 9:09 AM
Cool.. congrats for winning the contest
Vaturna Nov 7, 2023 4:26 AM
Thanks a lot for the beautiful conversation so far, nice to meet you too, krisnae 😃😃
Though it doesn't really look like it, I'm usually not that chatty. I always have to take my time with messages like these since I'm not a native English speaker as well.

I personally always just disabled the "Send note to Recent Friend Updates" checkbox so that my friends don't see the notes unless they want to look them up in my list, not wanting to show spoilers was one of the reasons. I'll keep playing around with the settings and the style. I easily lose myself in making something look nice, it's a lot of fun.

Usually I don't have a problem with spoilers myself, there were only a few really good mystery shows where I went out of my way to not read anyones take on it until I finished it.
Hope you don't mind me occasionally reading your notes. Seeing if you watch something I'm also interested in has definitely been an ulterior motive to send you the friend request. 😊

In case you finish it, I'm kind of interested in A Girl & Her Guard Dog once the season is over. I've dropped it 3 episodes in, but I still wonder if it has more to it than just a romanticised "teenage girl has a crush on her bad-boy caretaker who stalks her, brutally attacks everyone who gets too close and tries to exploit her at any possible moment". The short synopsis I originally read sounded quite interesting, but it turned out very different.

Enjoy the Fall season with your new MAL Supporter perks ❤
Vaturna Nov 6, 2023 4:33 AM
Congratulations for being in the top 5 winners for the contest!!

I Shall Survive Using Potions! will have a little bit of action as well, but I'd expect it to be much more bearable than in Parallel World Pharmacy (unless they blow it out of proportion for the second half). So far the anime even downplayed some of the action compared to the source material.

Thanks for your thoughts on notes. Especially when doing them per episode, I see it being harder to be consistent.
I never attempted doing notes for each episode, because I originally didn't want to write that much and I feared it would distract me from watching the shows (especially when watching multiple episodes in a row). I also just didn't know that BBCode worked for notes 🤣, hiding the text in a spoiler is super useful. But for a future season I kind of want to try it out for myself, at least once.

I definitely feel a bit guilty about complaining. It would help getting comfortable with the idea that our subjective viewing experience, how we perceive things, is very valuable in itself. If something observable makes us feel a certain way then criticising it is perfectly valid, even if someone else will have a different experience. (don't know if I interpreted you correctly there 😊)
For me, a big challenge with notes is to emphasise which parts of my critisism or praise are especially important. More often than not I'm even sure myself what's influenced me the most to like/dislike a show or scene. But it's not like I'm writing professional reviews here, it's just to get my thoughs on paper and I'm generally satisfied with how it turns out.
Vaturna Nov 1, 2023 3:07 PM
Thank you for the reply and also thanks for the nice words ❤ (For my profile header, instead of using a single image I combined character graphics of the main cast with a scenery background I found on the anime's website)

I Shall Survive Using Potions!, the anime on my profile, is very special to me because it's based on one of my favorite lightnovels. Personally, I'm really happy with the adaptation, but I can't help being biased. I can recommend giving the anime a chance if you don't have a problem with blocky 3D backgrounds. It's an isekai less focused on action and more about the main character Kaoru being smart, giving a lot of snarky comments, looking out for others, and sorting out her life in this new world. It's generally more lighthearted, especially because Kaoru doesn't get into a lot of dangerous situations and can usually handle herself quite well. I especially like the humor and the interesting religious theme.

In The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really Love You, my favorite of the three girls so far is probably Karane. (second place would be Shizuka, but I like them all)
Sure, she's another tsundere, but I love how she's always going back and forth, not wanting to admit her feelings but ultimately always acting on them anyway, it's very cute. She's also very supportive in her own way: she calls out Rentarou whenever he does something weird and she helps Shizuka to open up in EP4. Karane definitely has a problem of impulsively punching Rentaro, but the moment she notices she's going too far she immediately backs down and is sorry. I'd probably think differently about it if she wasn't a fictional character, but her being crestfallen over accidentally hurting him is very cute too.

I started doing notes mostly for myself, it helps me to gather my loose thoughts and it's cool to look back on what I've written after a while. I feel like I'm sometimes pretty harsh with my comments and I'm still working on my style, but it's always nice when someone finds their way to my notes 😁. I love to read other people's thoughts as well, it's always interesting to see a different perspective.
Vaturna Nov 1, 2023 1:35 AM
I also really like the notes in your anime list.

For me personally, the slapping scene from The Apothecary Diaries EP4 was a really nice emotional moment for Maomao. She took a lot onto herself by warning everyone about the dangers only to have it overturned by someone who thinks they know better. All the build up frustration from before released, Maomao takes the charge. It was a bit extreme, especially the hair-pull, but Maomao needed to get herself heard to save lady Lihua and to not have the ladies-in-waiting sabotage her. In that moment, she probably didn't care if she would get punished for it later. But I definitely get where you're coming from.
Vaturna Nov 1, 2023 1:33 AM
Cool Fall Anime 2023 About Me design 👍
I love the combination of the header image and the Calm Winter theme, it looks really calm and cute. Also enjoyed your thoughs so far on The 100 Girlfriends Who Really [...] Love You. Glad you made it to the contest before the deadline.

I'm surprised too how much I like the new 100 Girlfriends anime. Rentarou is super sweet, the rivalry between the girls turns more and more into friendly banter, and it's just really funny. Only thing I personally didn't like as much was probably that creepy vice principal teacher jumping around the hallways. She fits into the rest of the humor, but I find her a bit off-putting. I want them to focus the jokes only on the harem, it's easier to accept this weird situation if the rest of the world is still acting normal. 😅
