(I'm reviewing season 1 and season 2 in this review, so sit back and enjoy it.)
This anime at first glimpse REALLY didn't excite me, but I was wrong. It was a wonderful surprise to see for a first impression into the sports anime world.
So, let's get started...
- FIRST IMPRESSIONS -
6/10
...
When Haruka says the first few lines for the introduction, it was like a little pleasant surprise for me. Sure, it's not exactly the best but it caught my attention enough to continue the first episode. And by the end of it, I was more than surprised as to just how much I enjoyed it than to what I was expecting!
- STORY -
5/10
The story is simple and very easy to follow. Not as original, but it's not bad at all. It was executed very well though, I'll give props to that. But really, there isn't much to talk about about the story. (What really drives this anime is more of the characters to be honest.)
- CHARACTERS -
7/10
They really are the stars of the show, and probably the thing I mostly enjoyed about in the show. They're relatable and very entertaining! (I'm only going to showcase the main five which were Haru, Makoto, Rei, Rin, and Nagisa due to the fact that there were lots of characters. But trust me, every character blended in very well in the series!)
Haru - He was by far the most interesting out of all of them. What with his addiction (or you might as well call his love) for water and the fact that he strips whenever he even sees water that's large enough for him to dive into no matter what situation he's in, I incredibly loved him for being so calm in most of the things he's been put through! But he really did have some development throughout season 1 and 2, which I appreciate very much as well.
Makoto - The friendly giant, I'd say. He's Haruka's best friend and is more like the Mom of the group. I really loved how he worries over Haru and the rest of the crew. Even his flustered moments were very enjoyable! Although not as much development for him as Haru, he did get quite a bit and was even a major requirement for Haru's as well!
Nagisa - He's the shota of the group, kind of generic but real sweet. He even adds some shipping references for the fanbase to enjoy (myself included.) I enjoyed how he was basically the light that lit the firework onto the whole swim club idea and even encouraging for another person (*cough*Rei*cough*) into joining them. And even though he's almost happy nonstop, he did have quite the depth to him later on.
Rei - I guess he's the opposite to Nagisa, more strategic than carefree. But for an original character, I really thought he was a character from the source (the light novel series). He really fit in! His character development I'd say was the second most noticeable (with him being rather reluctant but soon warms up to swimming in general overtime.) And his "BEAUTIFUL" thing really made it for me.
Rin - I'd say that Rin really had changed throughout the series! At first I was like "Ohhhhhh no not one of these people again-" but slowly, I began to be rather attached to him. He wanted to be the best and had strong ambitions, but was a tad cocky at times (which I can definitely understand, but that does change.)
Overall the characters were just a good thing to have around, and I couldn't really imagine if any of them were missing.
- ART -
9/10
Kyoto Animation had done wonderfully with this series! The water, lighting, movement, and just how everything was done was STUNNING! All of the competition scenes were amazing and keeps your eyes glued to the screen, and some of the symbolism through it was beautiful!
- SOUND -
7/10
The sound was very good quality, but nothing too special to think about. I LOVED the voice acting though since it was very well done and the cast had suited each character perfectly. The OST isn't very memorable (I'm not counting the character songs, guys.) but it definitely isn't bad either.
- ITS ENDING -
8/10
Now, both endings for each season were very satisfying and I was pretty happy with how it turned out. In the second season, it was more about Haru and Makoto (along with others) moving on since they were almost finished with high school. Haru didn't have anything in mind which was very problematic, and during a festival he even has a fight with Makoto about what he was going to do since graduation was coming so soon. It ended with Haru finally being able to move on and become a professional swimmer and things had lit up from there. (From the run down swim club at Iwatobi turning into one of the popular clubs to join, and Makoto and Haru moving to Tokyo all happy to get on with their lives)
I'd say it was a great ending for the series as it had ended with a scene that was drawn in the beginning of the series in the first place and boy was it nice to see them grow up bit by bit!
- ENJOYMENT + CONCLUSION -
I'd like to say that although the story wasn't the most original I didn't regret watching it! I really loved the show for just the simplicity and its characters, and it did have a type of story that was easy to follow, it had pretty good pacing, amazing art, etc.
Would I recommend it? Definitely if you have free time or if you just want something to watch just for the sake of watching. Would I recommend it for the plot? It'll depend on you but it's not OVERFLOWING with it.

This is my first review so take it easy, no? The way I got thrown into the show that is Zankyou no Terror, I was listening to its OST, and it had caught me right away. When I read the small description, I was actually quite interested in what the anime was about, and soon after I started watching it. After finishing the show in one go, I can definitely say that it did have an impact on me to quite an extent. - FIRST IMPRESSIONS - ... |
