This is not a review to be taken seriously and it assumes you've watched Kuroko no Baskett, but, welcome to Hinata No Volleyball.
If you watched Kuroko no Baskett, this is EXACTLY the same, players find players that they used to play with/against, they are underdogs, they lose, get better, they win. EXACTLY like Kuroko No Baskett, but with Volleyball, if you didn't like Kuroko, there's a COLOSSAL chance you won't like this, but if you DID like Kuroko no Baskett, chances are, you'll like this just as much if not more.
It has way more comic reliefs and way less pointless drawn out conversations, everything is
...
short, concise and it doesn't feel like you're getting cheated out of an episode at any given moment, action packed start to end. They definitely have more knowledge about Volley than KnB had about Baskett, and pretty much every move (to the exception maybe of the main character's speed but I think it's supposed to be seen as an exaggeration other than mach 5 speed) is legitimate, no one jumps 7 feet into the floor or goes "in the zone", it's pretty realistic play.
Even in the characters' personalities you will find many similarities to KnB, so yeah, what was meant to be a smart ass review saying "welcome to Hinata No Volleyball" turned into a friendly comparison between both animes.
By the way, the soundtrack and animation in this one is just as pristine, so, yeah.
If you didn't watch Kuroko however, ignore this review!

This anime is odd, it's another one that could be amazing, but turns out to be just, good. I wouldn't say above average because there's many anime I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but comparing to all the anime that I finished and/or liked, this one is just above average.
The story is good, not too complex, it's explained in the first couple of episodes, and you really "buy it", you want to see the end of it but... in the end it just, doesn't deliver. The build up is great and the character development is also great and you see characters growing from
...
episode to episode and not just the main character. It has a good amount of plot twists that will make you stick around until it ends, specially because it only has 25 episodes, and that's where the problem lies.
There's so many things that need closure and/or development, you know the anime has a lot of potential, you know they could easily make a good 4 or 5 seasons of it, but you notice you're 3 episodes away from the end and start asking yourself, wow, how are they going to do all this in 3 episodes?
They didn't, great build up, great story, but in the end, it just didn't deliver, it wasn't bad, but it leaves a sour taste in your mouth, a taste of "it could've been so much more". Not a bad anime per sé, it won't make you angry because of the terrible ending, because the ending wasn't terrible, or bad even, just, premature.
Overall it's a solid, gateway anime that you can watch while you're still deciding what big anime are you going to watch next, or good to watch on the TV, but it won't be very memorable in the end.

Let me start by telling you that I'm 29 years old, and when I was 6 years old, I fell in love with an anime called Captain Tsubasa, not only because I am Portuguese and we generally love football, but because when you're at that age, everything is magical, you want to do the shots they do, you want to be Tsubasa Ozora on the field.
I've seen many sports anime after it, and none were good enough to create the impact that Captain Tsubasa caused on me, there were a few that I loved such as Miracle Giants Dome-Kun! and Ganbare! Kickers, but Captain Tsubasa
...
would always have a special place in my heart.
To all the sports anime fans that grew up with this style of Shounen, the anime with the potential to dethrone the generally accepted king is finally here. The story is just what you expect from a sports anime, it's unrealistic? It's an anime. How many anime about sports are realistic? hell, other than slice of life how many anime about anything are realistic? and is that really what you are looking for when you're watching anime? realism? the answer is obviously no.
Despite all that, whoever wrote the anime and drawn the moves definitely knows his basketball since some of the plays are copy/paste from some of the greatest dunks, three-pointers or behind the hoop shots in real life, they know their technical therms, they know how basket works, and they made a damn good anime about it.
The generation of miracles is exactly what they said it is, miracles, players that usually are born in the united states, once every other decade, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James... except these were born in Japan, all at the same time, and now, they're all rivals. You will love them all.
The main character is not some overpowered monster that destroys everyone, no, he's very simple, you barely notice him, but you know he creates the biggest hype, and you can barely wait to see what he will be capable of in the future, but he faces hardships, real hardships, he's the underdog you like to root for. Right at the beginning of season 2, his potential will scare you.
His rivals are not only his rivals, they're his friends, you will get to know them, their traits, you will appreciate the anime as much for its school and story characteristics as much as you will do for the sports component. The character development is ridiculously good, and you will get acquainted with all players from the top teams in about 25 episodes, games last 2 or 3 episodes, which is just the right amount of time, it's packed with action, it's packed with story, it has just the right amount of each!
It keeps topping itself, over, and over, and over, and you get more and more excited, and not only for basketball or sports fans! No! You can like fighting anime such as Fairy Tail, Zetsuen no Tempest, Bleach, Naruto, and you won't be let down by the action of Kuroko no Basket, I guarantee it.
No one would ever thought an anime about basketball could be so interesting, so filled with adrenaline and action packed, no one would ever think it could have such an amazing story, but Kuroko no Basket will prove you wrong, your heart will race, you will laugh, you will get excited, you will root for your favorite characters, and you will watch another, and another, and another, until you inevitably surrender to the awesomeness of Kuroko no Basket.
As a sports anime, it gets a 10. As an overall anime, it still gets a 10 because it is that awesome!

Do NOT watch it unless you plan on reading the manga, let it be known right from the start that the show was canceled in 2006 after season one which had a grand total of 24 episodes and lasted for 5 months. There are still no plans to do any more seasons in 2014.
The reason why you shouldn't watch it is because the anime is pretty awesome. It's not going to change the way you see life, it's not going to make you say "it's my favorite anime of all time" but you will enjoy it, it will grow on you episode after episode, and
...
just when you're getting into it, it ends, with no closure, nothing.
The story is not immense but it's pretty decent, a guy wants to be the greatest air trek rider in the universe, and the first season is just a build up to see what you should expect, get to know the characters, and take a sneak peek at the awesome rivals he will have to face in the future... a future only available in manga sadly.
The soundtrack is great, the art is good, the concept is relatively unique, and overall it's a very, very solid anime that could easily be one of my favorites if it was completed, and it will definitely leave you wanting for more.
Viewer discretion is advised, strong fanservice components such as light ecchi. (Censored in all the anime versions as far as I know).

I personally didn't like it, no one will make me change my mind, and I seriously don't care for fanboys/fangirls. Let me elaborate. It was sold to me by friends and many commercials as a Seinen, it turned out to be a Shounen which I could deal with, I love Shounen, but as it kept going on and on, it implemented more and more Shoujo components and in the end tried to pass a bit of ryona. All this was extremely confusing!
Sword Art Online is to me, the anime most "all over the place" in history. At some point, it almost loses every component
...
that might interest a guy to watch it, and any guy would pick Accel World / .HACK series before it.
You go in for the MMORPG, the story and the fights, and this will work out great the first 6 or 7 episodes, some might argue that guys will stick around until episode 14, hell, I watched it until episode 15, you will be loving the show by then, and then you're stuck in an extremely poorly written story with a lots of forced components that no one with the slightest bit of intelligence can take seriously, an insane number of plot holes, and poorly explained crap, even for an anime.
I seriously had to stop watching it at episode 15, it was a deal breaker for me, and the fact that they destroyed an anime that could potentially be very good, is more of a reason to dislike it, you don't turn your back to your fanbase like that midways through a season.
Also, prepare for the over-dramatic scenes, the unnecessary killing of important characters to give it depth, but not actually going "there". It's like they are trying to add the horror of Full Metal Alchemist and Ao no Exorcist, but if you're going to do it, then go full blown horror, because horror suited for all ages is just wrong.
The ending of episode 15 was just an excuse to air another 10 episodes. The story lost all credibility more times than I could handle it, and most likely, not many people are going to watch Season 2.
