A tight and tense little OVA co-directed by none other than Masamune Shirow. It focuses on just a small but interesting part of the Black Magic manga and expounds upon the basic story with some great animation and exciting action sequences. The music is pretty good, too.

VISUALS: 7/10
Generally fluid animation compliments great character and mecha design. This will not blow you away, but it's good enough not to be distracting and the visual ideas carry it above other similar stuff.

STORY: 7/10
Simple and straightforward plot and not much excess. The story is a set-up for the action here, which is OK by me since it doesn't read more

I don't understand the chronic neglect for Hades Project Zeorymer. Top tier animation and mecha designs plus a plot that's a cut above the usual dull mecha anime fare. This OVA series is sadly deprived of a rightful place amongst the pantheon of interesting sci-fi OVA series from the 80s. What sets Zeorymer apart isn't just the visual perfection but also a real attempt at including some interesting story elements, themes and ideas that have obviously made their way into more well known fare (Evangelion in particular). This is a must see for fans of sci-fi anime from the 80s.

Undoubtedly Mermaid's Scar is one of the most underrated anime around. Start with a creepy and well-crafted plot that snugly fits into the 45 minute runtime, throw in some moody music and top it off with fluid animation and atmospheric art and you get this: a lost gem from the waning but still golden years of classic horror/sci-fi ultra-violent anime. See this.
