When it comes to making anime that is overflowing with metaphors and symbolism, Ikuhara is your guy. I remember hearing about the project and was excited for a yuri anime to be directed by Ikuhara, since he's always included it in his past work. I came with the expectation that this show was going to be revolutionary like Utena (pun not intended) and Penguindrum. Yuri Kuma fulfilled it to an extent. The show is supposed to be an adaptation of the popular online game and the show is presented through Fubuki, a pretty normal destroyer. You then meet all the other girls ( they are all great but its hard to keep track of all their names). The show is really cute and falls under the genre "cute girls doing cute things". There is a lot of yuri subtext ( I was surprised, though its not unusual since all the characters are girls besides the admiral). The show is pretty enjoyable.

I had high expectations for the anime when I watched the preview for it. I expected it to be at least around 24 or 25 episodes, but then they announced it was only 12. The anime is adapted from the manga (which is still not done running). The anime was good, it was fascinating seeing the characters animated and voiced. The art style was nice as well and the animation itself wasn't half bad. One thing that bothered me was that the anime was listed as "yuri", but the entire show barely had any yuri in it. I was very hesitant in starting this anime for some reason, but now that I've finished it I regret not starting it any sooner. This has become one of my favorite anime's because it is so awfully cute and the characters really get to you. The plot isn't a complicated one, and the characters themselves are what bring the most out of the anime.
