Since I was creeping on your/Sam's profile (sending this to both of you) and saw this conversation, I figured I'd try and address the confusion since I've played the Danganronpa games. It's sort of hard for me to figure out exactly what they're going for with part 3 also, but here's my take on the situation:
-The first game is the same thing as the first anime, which you guys watched.
-The second game has a different main cast than the first game/anime but still comes after the first game in the same timeline/universe. And yes, games 1 and 2 are directly connected in a substantial way. (ie. if you tried to play the second game without playing the first you would be somewhat confused by certain parts of the story.)
-Danganronpa 3 the anime comes after game 2 in the timeline, which means it might be related to the story of both of the first two games. However, due to the nature of the story of game 2, if the writers wanted it could easily be made into a sidestory that has no effect whatsoever on whatever is going to happen in the new anime, or at least the effect could be summarized pretty quickly in a few sentences of narration without changing the experience much. It's looking like they're going that route since they've only announced things about characters from the first game, and it makes sense that they'd want to make it accessible to anime-only fans. So, basically, I think you guys are most likely fine to go straight from 1 to 3, but I can't find anything that absolutely guarantees that will be the case.
Also, note that there's also a new game coming out titled "New Danganronpa V3" (plus some subtitle). Don't get confused if you find something about that though because that is starting an entirely new storyline.
