This show is basically an animated historical novel - you could frequently feel you are reading a book. "Show, don't tell" rule is ignored altogether. And I think novel-like narration and fast-paced dialogue is really most unique and the strongest point of the show.
Now, the series is often categorized as SciFi and you seem to like the genre. Forget about it. LOGH is the most accidentally SF story I've ever seen. There is virtually nothing futuristic (and neither supernatural) about its setting (heck, even Star Wars was totally futuristic by comparison). Personally I don't understand the choice of writer - Age of Sails, World War II or Mediterranean Sea in antiquity (especially during Peloponnesian or Persian wars) would be MUCH more appropriate. If you didn't look beyond the artificial SF surface you wouldn't be able to easily overlook 2D battles fought using antiquated naval tactics with strong emphasis on importance of individual commanders' tactical and maneuver skills. And ideologies also aren't futuristic - it isn't some dystopian cyberpunk setting. It's real-history politics.
When you think about the series as if it was set in history it is also easier to ignore gender issues - but I know I'm rather sensitive on the subject. And the show is peculiar because the gender inequality shows itself not in major events (some female characters play very important roles) but in small things.
But if you are ready to accept all of that the show delivers - politics-wise it's infinitely better than e.g. Game of Thrones. And it has very compelling main characters, and all of its four seasons have satisfying conclusions - especially with season 2 finale being particularly brilliant and season 3 finale being <no, I won't tell, because SPOILERS>.
My main problem with the show is its last season. By the end of season 3 I was almost convinced that I watched the best TV series in existence (and definitely most politically insightful work of entertainment). Season 4 ruined that impression. Fortunately it has decent ending. But apart from that I didn't see the point of almost half of it. And the other half (which theoretically has important point) is by standards of the show politically retarded - I'm quite sure the series contradicts itself in many major ways here. And I'm not sure I fully enjoyed small romance part of season 4.
Oh, and if you are going to watch it, I think it's a good idea to watch the movie Overture to a New War instead of the first two episodes - they are much too chaotic and don't sell the show well. The movie is just much better retelling of these two. And don't mind episode 5 - it's the only one with heavy Villain of the Week syndrome.
Although I didn't like it I think Akira is a good choice - you may like it as many people do and I think its production values are something worth Blue Ray edition. I only found its plot a complete mess. See for yourself.
