Yeah, poor Maes died very early on in the show, I would've liked to see more of him since he was such an interesting character, his phone calls with Roy were always quite funny
I think after L dies there's like a 3 year time skip but I get what you mean, if I remember correctly after the initial news of his death gets to them he doesn't get mentioned again by Near and Mello, even though they're supposed to be childhood friends who spent time in the same orphanage. it was pretty weird how there wasn't much explanation for the orphanage either, it just kind of pops out of nowhere so maybe they cut some stuff from the manga, a flashback episode with L, Near, and Mello would've been nice at least
Yes exactly, the story wasn't quite the same anymore in that last arc and it felt dragged out, idk if this is largely because of the hard-transition or not, like - in the first 2 cours most of the time Light and L are trying to outsmart each other in a series of exciting mind battles, L is an equal opponent to Light that could mess up his plans in a moment's notice and is like a second MC that you can cheer on, but in the last cour most of the focus is on Light and Near and Mello don't really seem like a huge threat to him.

My memory is a little fuzzy since I watched it long ago but I remember Gen. Oliver bringing a tank down the elevator and hitting Sloth with a cannon shot, haha
I really liked Greed, Ling Yao, Maes, Roy mustang and his squad, and Scar has nice development in both this and the 2003 version even
and the Ishval tragedy was really messed up, especially after you find out that Envy was the one behind it by transforming into a soldier
Almost every episode of Death Note was really good until ep 25-ish, but it started going downhill after that imo, didn't really like the new characters that get introduced in the last arc
