the short of it is that ratings are rankings, and in essence the only guidelines I use while rating are that 10s are better than 9s, which are better than 8s, and so on. I place everything I finish on the big ordered list, and then assign it whatever score happens to be there.
Roughly, though, I'd say 9-10s are definite favorites, 8s are weak favorites, 7s I really like, 5-6 is things I like, 4s I kind of dislike, 3s I dislike, and 1-2 are awful or empty
now, what makes something "better" than another is the real question. It is really just the combination of several different factors, weighted however feels right to me. Sometimes I'll go "well, this show had a couple boring episodes, so it'll go under this other one that didn't" and sometimes it's "hm, I don't think about this show at all anymore, so I'll put it under this other one that still pops up in my head from time to time". It just depends.
