Highschool of the Dead is an anime that should be taken with a grain of salt if you want to enjoy it at all. This show is quite a hard one to review because of all the aspects that make it what it is. It's atmosphere is good at points but gets ruined by obnoxious fanservice and dumb characters. If not for good animation and the atmosphere when it isn't being violated by bouncing boobs across the screen, this show would not be worth watching at all.

anime they refer to the zombies as "them" for reasons unknown to me. The story gets a 6 because of the atmosphere it creates. The characters never have a clear goal at any given point, their goal is to survive. The kind of tension this creates is great for the show as it gives the viewer a reason to keep on watching to see what happens to the group of characters in the next episode. It also suits the show well because their objectives are in line with what kind of people they are, they're regular civillians, they're not trying to stop the outbreak or find a cure, they're trying to SURVIVE. The comedy is decent, at one point a character breaks the fourth wall, probably one of the only funny jokes in the show.
Art: 8/10
The art and animation is very crisp and fluid. The characters all look different and have distiguishing characteristics (if not for that to be ruined by the fact that all the females have large breasts). The CG sequences are well done and have a nice look to them. Nothing much to comment on as other then the female character designs, the series looks great.
Sound: 6/10
Nothing terribly good or bad. I didn't really like the OPs or EDs but they were not really my favorite kind of music. I don't really remember hearing any backround music, if there was then it must not have been that memorable.
Characters: 4/10
If not for one character this probably would have been lower. The characters in this show are absolutely one sided and and any attempts at romance or otherwise fail because of this. The only memorable character is Saeko seeing as she is probably the only non dumbass character in the whole anime; And the only one to show remorse for what she is doing in both the past and present. One character in particular is pretty much there only for fan service and to drive the cast around whenever they are in a vehicle, not a very good character and does nothing to drive the non existen plot forward. All the other characters are forgetable as they have no other use then to kill the millions of zombies waiting to eat them.
Enjoyment: 7/10
If you can get past the actual lack of a plot, and the dumb and useless characters, this show is actually kind of good. The action is well done and the tension the setting provides really gives them the sense that they will die one way or another in this zombie apocalypse. Even then, you will have to wade through the absurd amounts of bouncing tits and upskirt shots to enjoy the show. Do not let this bi-polar review keep you from watching it though, it is a decent show even with its flaws.
