My rating scale is pretty generous, as I hardly give a rating below a 5. I also only rank shows I have completed at least 3 episodes, further adding to the upward bias. While enjoyment is primarily how I judge a show's rating, I find myself being more critical of the technical elements relative to those I highly enjoy.
Scoring Breakdown:
10: Flawless: Perfect in every single element, very few series ever make it to this level of acclaim.
9.5-9.9: Excellent. The show is posses minimal, sometimes unnoticeable flaws in every aspect of its production, and also highly enjoyable and keeps me glued to the screen, waiting for the next episode to load.
9.5-9.0: Very Good. Shows in this range are highly enjoyable and are very well made. However one or a few elements of the show (music, characterization, art style, etc.) needs a little extra polish to make it absolutely perfect.
9.0-8.5: Pretty Good. Enyoyability is well above the average, but either multiple flaws in the technical elements are present, or the overall production as a whole is of lower quality compared to the previous category. Many shows in this category can be more mundane in their overall narrative but manage to be unique and interesting to hold my attention.
8.5-8.0: Good. Probably the most common category, shows in this range are enjoyable during its run, but can be somewhat generic, cliche, or ordinary compared to a masterpeice. In general, production values and technical elements are less polished. However, some technical element, characterization, or plot device will keep my attention and boost my enjoyment. Many shows here are very enjoyable, but lack the flair to stand out in a crowd.
8.0-7.5: Just OK
Technical quality is usual similar to shows in the "Good" category, but often the plot and characters lack that hook which keeps me intrigued and motivated to keep watching. Shows that fall into here aren't necessary unwatchable, but are usually very generic and cliche, offering little variety to the viewer.
7.5-7.0: Lackluster.
To fall down here, either both the technical and enjoyment of the shows are poor, or one if the two element are exceptionally bad while the other is only average or slightly above. I generally dislike most shows in this category, but are not aggravating enough to be considered hated or "bad".
7.0-6.5: Poor
To get here, both technical and enjoyment elements are below the average. If the enjoyment of the show is abysmal, overshadowing any positive technical elements of the production, it lands in this category. Most shows in the dropped category fall this far, and fail to create interest, let alone keep it for the entire run.
6.5-6.0: Bad
Most elements of the show are flawed, and enjoyment is close to zero. While these shows arent horrendous, they are usually bad enough to dissuade me from ever reccomending them to others.
<6: Terrible
Need I say more? Shows down this far are irredeemable in my mind, with no positive elements in the technical department, usually more infuriating than fun to watch. I never finish shows this terrible usually, since I enjoy keeping my sanity intact.
I generally watch English dubs whenever possible since English is my first language and it allows me to connect with the characters on a deeper level. However, I'm not opposed to watching subs if necessary and i don't hold it against the show during my reviews/evaluations.
My field of interest in terms of genre is pretty open, but I'm not a big fan of superfluous ecchi. It needs to add something to the show in order to be possibly looked at positively. Otherwise, Drama, comedy and romance are my favorites though.
Since MAL decided to do rating in terms of whole numbers rather than decimals, I give my rating out to one decimal (X.X).
I also post on the anime subreddits (reddit.com/r/anime and reddit.com/r/animesuggest) so you can find me there too.
Feel free to recommend stuff to me based on my viewing history and favorites page and add me as a friend if we share similar interests. I often use my friends lists to find new shows and a positive review will improve my chances of watching it.
