I entered this series expecting it to be just another generic harem school battle anime. Needless to say, my expectations were pretty low.
After finishing the final episode, I ended up really enjoying it.

THE REVIEW
=================
...
Despite having a harem atmosphere this series is so far from being one. You would think that the MC is a dense gary stu just like any other Harem Battle MCs but Ikki is really AN ALPHA MALE. He has a purpose, he knows what he wants, and he works hard to attain it even though he has no talent. No bullshits, no excuses, and no melodramatic moments. HE JUST DOES IT. Because of that attitude he gets the girl early on in the series.
Stella, the heroine, is also pretty great. Don't let this big breasted pink haired tsundere deceive you. She is strong, she can handle herself, and she is in love with Ikki. The dynamic between the two is really enjoyable to watch. Their dialogues are well grounded and do not insult the audience' intelligence.
Aside from the little sister and the daughter of the sword master, the side characters are a little weak. Little background information were provided which I found a little irksome.
The overall plot is also something we have seen countless of times. MC is shunned and is considered weak, enters a school and a tournament ensues, and slowly wins until he reaches the top.
The fight animation was pretty good to be honest. The movements were fluid and when coupled with some nicely placed artistic touches, were some of the nicest fights that I've seen with this kind of show.
Overall, Ikki and Stella were the stars of the show. Their interactions are pretty sweet and fun and I had a great time watching the two of them.

What should have been a mediocre show turned out to be a nice surprise. Although it might not be talked about for months to come, everyone should at least give this a chance and just enjoy it. So I'll give it...
7.4/10!
The two leads really carried the shortcomings of the show. Surely, a contender for anime's best couple of the year. Although the flaws are glaring, most viewers would find enjoyment if they stop criticizing and just watch the show for what it is.

Wow. I'm surprised how this gem passed under my radar for so long. I've forgotten how long it was since I watched a show so fun and relaxing that I always have a stupid grin on my face after each episode.
Tsuritama is simple (the studio knows it) and sometimes simplicity is good enough for a show about fishing.
=================
...
THE REVIEW
=================
The show starts with Yuki, a socially awkward boy, transferring to a new school. There he meets Haru, who's a hyperactive self-proclaimed alien, and invites him to fishing. Sounds silly? Don't worry it gets more sillier! Haha. From there on, you will see an indian guy, an alien organization that worships ducks, hilarious dances, squirt gun madness, a cool grandma, etc. You can actually see that the studio is having a great time making this show.
The background visuals are well suited to the show. It's simple but the colors are crisp and vibrant. There are times when the backgrounds looks like painting out of a canvass and it's just a treat to watch. The meshing of the colors are really relaxing to the eyes and you would just want to sit back, get a cool drink, and relax.
The pacing was also pretty good. Some might find it a little slow but for a premise such as fishing you don't need an adrenaline pumping sequence. Truthfully, every scene has a purpose and builds character.
=================
CHARACTERS
=================
This is where tsuritama shines. Our main characters feel so alive. Yuki starts off as an anxious boy who's had a difficult time making friends due to him and his Grandma moving places so frequently. Natsuki, the fishing prince, is a grumpy rebellious boy who has a family problem. Ya-maaaaa-dah, the indian guy, starts off as a stalker. Haru, the alien, is just there to annoy Yuki. Each episode always bring something to their characters and by the end of the show they have shown a new level maturity and growth.
The supporting characters are also engaging specially the Grandma, Natsuki's family, and Tapioca the duck. Yes...the duck. I can't count how many times I've laughed whenever Tapioca gets a screentime. And come on, it's name alone makes me crave for a bubble tea.
I also liked the symbolisms. From Yuki getting drowned whenever anxious, Haru carrying a fishbowl, Natsuki getting a haircut, the flowers in the garden, etc. It provides a nice contrast to the silliness of the show.
The soundtrack is also good, I find myself always looking forward to the ED. When that "Hooo..Ho Ho..Ho Ho." starts to fade in, I find myself humming to the tune and singing it. It's a nice song to listen to when you're at the beach.
For a SoL show, there is actually an overarching plot that slowly gets develop with each episode so even with the "compelling story guys", they will have a hard time bashing the show.

VERDICT
=================
Tsuritama tells a good story and message. Like fishing, we may find ourselves bored and exhausted with our everyday lives; but when we finally caught that elusive fish, friendship in Yuki's case, it makes all those difficult moments worth it. Thing is, we should always cherish the smallest things in our lives no matter the hardship because that's what living comes down to.
There a some flaws with the show and I'm pretty conflicted whether I should deduct it to my score. It could've been better to add more characters or show some character's backstory but at the same time it felt like the overall intention of the show might get lost if it was the case. So ultimately, I give it:
9.5/10!
Tsuritama is one of the best on its genre. It's full of enjoyable characters and silly moments. Don't watch this show with the intention of getting an adrenaline pumping story. A good way is to watch it once a week, gather your snacks, and watch with a friend or family.

I don't usually read the synopsis when starting a show and I started this believing it's another generic moe blob but gave it a chance because the twin tail girl in the poster looked kind of charming. I was not disappointed and it truly was a moe sol show---at the start. I noticed some out of place scenes but didn't pay much attention because I thought it was just an average studio making average mistakes.
Then it happened....

THE REVIEW
=================
The studio has done a brilliant job in hooking its viewers with the 1st episode. The show's symbolism and subtle camera pans are done really well all throughout the series. I am usually someone who does not watch moe shows but the 1st episode really pulled me in. Sadly, the show suffers from poor pacing starting from Episode 3 instead of building up on the foundation that the 1st episode laid.
The show switched to a 4-5 episode back story of an uninteresting character with an uninteresting past (except for Taroumaru!). Almost half of the show was used up for her. The backstory of Megu-nee and Yuki, 2 pivotal characters, was also bare bones to give way to that flashback. It also felt like they overused the moe-sol segments for too many episodes. I think they could have used more episodes during their first few days so we could get invested in their relationships but they just used a "tell do not show" style which was kind of cheap.
Fortunately, they got back on track during the last three episodes and it was a great roller coaster of emotions. Murphy's Law be damned!

The twin tail girl charmed me into watching this show and boy, was I not disappointed. Shovel girl--ahem--Kurumi is definitely best waifu material (did I do it right?). She is literally and figuratively, the group's guardian. She is a strong-willed dependable badass that supports the group from the frontlines. PTSD? Ha! Kurumi laughs and fights at the face of adversity!
Yuki is the emotional support and Rii-san the stomach support (LOL). Really, all the characters are archetypes and it's pretty good how they leave and evolve as a character except for Rii-san who does not get any backstory at all. Well, at least she's good as a housewife.
I'm not even going to dig deep for Miki as I'm still bitter about her abundant screentime. For taroumaru, that little ball of cuteness deserves pet of the year!

SPOILER!!!
The show is a pretty good depiction of the anxiety and fears that teenagers feel as they take that first step into society. Replace the zombies with Adults trying to get the characters to conform to the norms; Megu-nee as that fond memory in your childhood that you cannot just let go; Taroumaru as a reminder of your innocent days; the Apocalyptic zombie world as society full of uncertainties, disappointments, and despair; and the Graduation as a sign of that bold first step outside of your comfort zone and into a new world of unknowns.
The first episode and the great attention in details makes me want to give this show a 10. Unfortunately, the flaws are glaring and it felt like it would be too unfair to give it my bias.
so in the end I give it...
7.4/10
A show with great potential hampered by poor pacing, little character development with some characters, and too many moe-sol segments.

It has always intrigued me how zombies or flesh eating humans has not made much of a presence in the anime industry. There were shows like Highschool of the Dead (and that turned into a fanservice horsecrap), Hellsing (mostly vampires but there was and an arc which featured great zombie actions), Sankarea (which mainly focuses on romance and hope), Ore was zombie desu ka (which was quite an oddity but its one of those shows that I can watch for pure stupid fun!), and a couple more.
...
There was really no show in this genre that has truly captivated me; then came Tokyo Ghouls...at least I first thought it would.
=================
THE REVIEW
=================
The series started off great. You have this normal college student named Kaneki who has a crush on this girl who share the same interest as him. All is good and well when shit quickly hits the fan and he ended up becoming a zombie; not just an ordinary zombie but one that is self-aware and has an unrelenting appetite to human flesh. It was great how the series tries to explore the dilemmas that a ghoul has to go through in his everyday life and how the everything is not as it seems.
The show was great until Ep 4 came. Everything just went so effin fast. The show introduced this psycho who wants to be more than friends with kaneki. The episode started off from exploring different character scenes and the psycho trying to woo kaneki over and within a couple of minutes they end in this arena slaughterhouse. It goes worse as the series went on and the last minutes of the final episode just puts that nail in the coffin.
The pacing is just so terrible that it's hard to sympathize with the character's plight. The one saving grace this show had is the last episode where they showed Kaneki's inner monologue. Now that is great way to show a character's state of mind. It is a huge disappointment and a wasted potential as I feel that Tokyo Ghoul is one of those character study shows all the while showing some great action scenes. There is just so many things happening to coherently fit into a 1 cour show. It was only until Ep 6 that I found out that there was a manga. Reviews on it has been pretty positive and I have seen that it was also recently finished so I am going to start reading it soon.
Let's not also forget the censorship. Oh GOD! THE CENSORSHIP!! There are freaking times when the screen gets cut in half or just fades to black and all you hear is the audio. For god's sake! Studio Pierrot knows that this is a mature show aimed at an adult audience so why the fuck are you guys doing this? I will not be surprised if they end up removing those in BR just to boost its sales and that will be very underhanded, man.

The art style and premise got me intrigued; the direction of the show made me wince. So, to finally wrap things up I will now be giving a final score which comprises the built-in scoring system coupled with my personal bias and a fairly complicated process of wiping my lips clean with a tissue smeared with aromatic blood after taking a sip at a bloody testicle juice mixed with a straw made from dried human intestines makes me want to give Tokyo Ghoul a score of..
6.4/10!
A show with potential hampered by the production staff and dubious marketing strategies. Fans of the genre will be left hanging by the noose and is advised to look for their craving somewhere else. If you don't mind horrible pacing and extreme censorship you can stay for the action which is still pretty good.

Oh man! That was one hell of a roller coaster ride. Heck I got to say that watching this show was more thrilling than a trip to 6 FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN and that means quite something. When I watched episode 1, I could already feel that I may be watching something special. Holding back my urge to marathon the show (I hate doing it on a great show), I managed to prolong my viewing over a month.
I clenched my fist, pulled my bedsheets, screamed at the TV,
...
cringed and got traumatized by a "certain episode",and cried as I witness the lives of a group of kids unfold in an illusory utopia.

THE REVIEW
=================
The great thing about this show is how it tells its story and how you get an understanding of its world and its inhabitants with each passing episode. This might be because its adapted from an award winning novel but a friend of mine said that the animation staff made a fantastic job of adapting it.
From the first episode, there seems to be a lot of confusing things that the viewer might get lost and lose interest (There are still some unanswered questions by the end of the show). But if you stick with it, you are treated with a show unlike other.
The story is told through the experiences of 5 psychic kids living in a post apocalyptic world ruled by psychics. You will experience their lives as children through adulthood. As far as personality goes, the author did a good job of straying away from making a typical character archetype. For the world, it is a great mesh of old civilization with somehow modern technologies. The amazing thing here is how the author made a pretty realistic society that fits in that world and create bizarre things/creatures that live in it.
The art/animation team did a fantastic job of creating a theme/palette that suits shinsekai's world. It is cryptic, bizarre, beautiful, and nostalgic. There are a couple of episodes with huge animation dips but it does not detract from my enjoyment (I event thought that it was intended at first lol). The sound did an amazing job in pulling you and immersing you in the world. I'm not a good critic when it comes to music but if I have to summarize my thoughts regarding this department it is: Intense, serene, and mystifying.

From the new world is one of those animes/adaptations that comes around once in several years. It tackles human behavior, shunned social practices, and a lot disturbing scenes. It comes with a couple of faults but such is expected in a daring and thought provoking show like this.
So, to finally wrap things up and as a thanks to anyone who has read my longest review yet, I will now be giving a final score which comprises the built-in scoring system coupled with my personal bias and a fairly complicated process of mustering up my imaginary cantus and drawing the energy from the environment so that I can ask my homophobic future self for a fairly reasonable score that is not influenced, in any way, by teens making out and having a smexy time with the same gender and as I get lost in my own write up my future self finally told me the score of..
9.2/10!
A great show that makes the viewer feel like they also live in its world. Fans of video entertainment regardless of their genre/type preferences are advised to watch it and I'm strongly recommending to buy this show rather than stream it.
Homophobes will surely despise the series though lol.

Anyone who has watched rom com animes for a long time will have a hard time engaging themselves in the first episode of this series. The whole premise is just screaming "GENERIC HAREM!!" and your belief is solidified during the first sequence of the very first episode. Bear with it since this series is one of the few romance/anime that has a lasting impression on any viewer.
THE REVIEW
The series touches on a few social problems that are well executed and portrayed. Anyone can really relate to the circumstances that the characters go through.
The pacing is good enough to keep the viewers attention and not
...
lose its focus although there are times when a scene seems to drag on for no apparent reason. There are times when the drama is a bit overblown and could have used a more realistic approach but it is more of a personal preference.
As "ROM COM ANIME RULES" dictate, some cliches need to be present and Sakurasou has plenty of them. The good thing is, it is executed well enough to not hinder my overall enjoyment of the series.
Characters are well developed and interesting. There are just some developments between characters that was suddenly thrown on the trash bin and it does not sit well with me (AOYAMA!!!)
OVERALL
The ending was magnificently done; concluding the Sakurasou residents' journey and at the same time leaving it open ended enough for the viewer's own interpretation of the character's respective futures is a huge plus for me.
My scoring is system is a fairly complicated process: including the in-built rating board, my personal enjoyment, and a little bit of angst because the real world is constantly bombarding me of failures despite all the hard work that I have done and pairing me with a girl who is overflowing with talent who is further plunging me in the depths of despair because I really really like her makes me want to give Sakurasou no Pet no Kanojou a
8.6/10!!
Fans of the genre are going to love this series despite its flaws. A goodl rom com anime that touches upon the harshness of society and the unfairness of the world.

Art: When I first saw the cover art for this show, I was repulsed by the animation style the studio used. This show uses sloppy hand drawn animation (don't know what kind of style it is)--which are often used when a studio wants to depict realistic faces. There are a lot of awkward faces and postures but as I watched several episodes, it kind of grew on me. After looking past the faults, I have the impression that it was used to make everything look more alive.
Story, Character, and Enjoyment: The series uses the same formula as most shounen sports anime wherein the overarching
...
story is to enter the tournament and become champions, nothing special at first. The great thing about this series though are the characters and how they interact and change as the series progresses. Everyone, including the supporting characters, are a treat to watch. It certainly feels like all them are living, breathing human beings.
Another great thing about the series is how it all ends. Each character has their own circumstances and the viewers gets to see how the characters cope and eventually find what it is that they have to do. No loose ends, just a very solid ending where the viewers are left satisfied.
Every fan of the genre should at least take a look at this series before dismissing it because of its art style. They might find a hidden gem if they did.
Score: 8.8/10 Has a couple of flaws but a great character driven sports show that everyone should watch.
