There is something almost Ghibli-esque about Kemono no Souja Erin, in its music choices and leisurely pace. It's all well-done, but is a seriously slow burn: I lost stamina towards the end, which is why my rating isn't as high as it might have been. That being said, this series is neat and well thought-out, simple to follow (too simple at times! It's clear this was meant for a younger audience) but no Juuni Kokuki, which is what I was hungering for at the end of my Twelve Kingdoms binge. Erin is the kind of protagonist you never feel bad watching or empathising with, because ... her growing pains are entirely reasonable and unselfish, making Kemono no Souja Erin an easy, enjoyable watch. This is the epitome of a lengthy, feel-good anime, though I only wish it had left me with a slightly stronger impression (though this is perhaps hard to do when recaps and flashbacks in the forms of montages of previous episodes make up perhaps 20% of each episode -- it got to a point where I was watching simply because I wanted to know *what* would happen next, and wasn't interested in *how*, leading to me fast-forwarding through episodes... never a good sign). Watch this for a dose of angst-free adventure, or a fantasy but not quite as sophisticated Gin no Saji.
