I have not researched the topic. The dropout rate (maybe dropout is inaccurate since some people leave because they cannot pay the tuition fee or due to other personal reasons, but I could not find a better word for 退学率) in Japanese universities is not high, but it is most definitely not 0%. GPA is usually not important, but Universities still have a credit system. Basically, if you do not meet certain requirements (attendance, grades, attitude, etc.), you will not get enough credits and, therefore, may not be able to graduate (in 4 years). I have never heard of someone who failed at college solely due to poor grades, though. Most universities are hard to get into but easy to get out of (graduate).
