It was very very average.
Maybe it's just that I watch too much football.
I dropped after first 3 episodes and finished manga instead.
Positive: how many mangas talk about the gridiron
not a whole lot.
Novel sport, pretty detailed descriptions, fairly involved storyline.
Negative: exaggerated features, even for a sports manga
...
Hated some details,
I dont like how the author glorifies notre dame. Yeah, ND was good
when they were all wearing pigskin helmets and all caucasian.
Last ND champ was in 80's. If they want to talk about real college football,
talk about SEC football: Florida, LSU, Bama, etc.
Also, players do not immediately sign into NFL. Most players play in college for mandatory 3 years before goin to pros.
Third, I've yet to hear of any real football players with 4.1 speed. That is absolutely and utterly impossible because most players have a pretty big muscle bulk too.
Yeah, I ranted, because I care

It's good but not great. Here's the reason why. I have just watched episode 24, kokuhaku. I am beginning to think this anime has some pacing problems. Why did the producer increase the pace so much in just 4 or 5 episodes? Seriously, in one episode, the two main characters went from casual friends to essentially engaged. I think that the producer wanted to emphasize character development more in the first half, but the anime is far too rushed from ep 20 to 24. If they went at the speed of the first 19 episodes, I would expect that there would be a second season
...
to resolve things. But, the producer hurried and essentially cut off the plot.
Nontheless, great storyline, nice cast, great seiyus, they managed to turn the stereotyped shonen romance into something with more drama and less fanservice. If the plot was spread over two seasons, maybe it would have been even better. Probably the best shonen romance in the last few years. This is one reason why I like light novel adaptations over visual novel and manga adaptations, there's more dramatic effects that the producers can take liberty with.

If you are not over 16, do not watch this anime. You will not get the plethora of social, political, psychological, and moral motifs. Plus, it is a bit too heavy hearted.
My honest opinion, if I compared Planetes to Evangelion, I would say that Planetes had a better quality to it. I am a optimist, and you pessimists and mecha lovers would probably prefer Planetes. However, Eva at points shuffled the philosophy around, and the ideas were far more open-ended and spread out. Planetes had much more centralized points to cover, and the crew did wonderfully to amalgamate these points into a driven story.
...
Like Eva, Planetes had its pessimistic interlude towards the end, however, it does not end with pessimism. The characters showed the ability to break through psychologically and connect. The characters will take on the challenges. I'd say that the ending to planetes was very focused and lucid.
Story: very driven. Various themes and motifs construct the background to the plot. With a visible climax and a conclusive ending, planetes was a very complete work.
Art: perhaps the most underachieving part of the anime. The background and character images could be developed better. However, they did very well in portraying space travel, not as a fancy action. Very realistic artwork for a very realistic anime.
Sound: The sound dictated the mood. Very appropriate for the various settings. However, various parts were done over the top. You can't hear explosions in space...
Enjoyment: Watch it on a break, at night. Try to contemplate and think while watching the anime for maximum understanding and enjoyment.
Character: Tightly knit background cast with two strong developing protagonists. Of course, the work did very well to portray the strengths and flaws of each character. However, I believe Fee and some other characters could be more developed. At times, the background characters appeared extremely static, and the crew could have changed the background. (In the real world, everybody is changing, should have a relativistic background).

If you are looking for the usual
harem/shonen romance/ecchi anime, this ain't it.
But it was a good weird and spontaneous romance
story.
One, there are only sporadic content of ecchi in there.
Save for Shinra Kuonji's occasional tease and some other
gimmicks, not much ecchi content. And that is not necessarily a
bad thing. It allows the story to expand beyond the scope
of the visual novel.
...
But, the producer could have done better. The storyline was not
planned out, and was very sporadic, with too many filler episodes
for a short series. What drives the story forward? It should be Ren's
relationship with the other girls. But, little progression is made at the emotional
or psychological level. There is a huge social gap between both sides.
The character planning could have been better, but since this came
from a visual novel, you could not have expected anything but one male
character along with a huge ensemble cast of girls.
Artwork is pretty well done, and there was no action, no pan shots, no
heroic shots. But it was well done for this genre. The animation studio
did a nice job touching up this anime. The characters look like repeats from
other series except for Shinra. She seems to be fresh design, and I think that
design will be used in the future for other independent female designs.
To conclude, good anime to watch on the plane, or something. Don't waste your
prime time or money on this
