Edit/Update: Apologies for having a differing opinion on an anime...It must be absurd to fathom that possibility. Just call me "psychologically abnormal" like the characters in the show, but I stand by my claims. This is a quick overview of the series...no spoilers, no major in-depth discussion, just giving the basics here. Enjoy (it starts out with some "strong language").
Basically this movie is literally a psychological, sci-fi, whiny, bitch fest like the series was too. I cannot emphasize that enough. Mainly due to Asuka and Shinji and their demeanors/personalities. My friend said this anime and the movies were "wondrous classics" for anime, yet that
...
cannot be further from the truth. The anime is drawn out to no end, and to support this point, the movie "(Neon Genesis Evangelion) Death and Rebirth" managed to summarize the entire 26 episode series in under an hour and a half and you could still follow along easily. This movie is slightly better than the series with better action sequences, plot progression, etc. Still, it is an anime to watch once, put it in inside a box, and let it gather dust 'til the end of time. So story, 5/10
On a more positive note, the music is wonderful, yet the gun/war sounds are a bit lackluster and cheap. Thus, even that cancels out in the sound department. Also, for those who say it has beautiful music, while this is true, some of it is clearly not original stuff they created on their own. Revamping Beethoven here for example. Lack of originality. 6-7/10
The only reason I am giving a 4 for the character category is because of some of the side characters and other main characters outside Asuka and Shinji. If it wasn't for them, a 2 would be the very most I could throw on this. Why do I hate them so much? Go back and watch the series -spoiler alert (not really)- All Asuka does is complain, talk excessively loud or is obnoxious, and she acts like a pompous, spoiled brat. All Shinji does is feel bad for himself, for others, for living, yet he does nothing about it time and time again. Utterly pathetic bunch of static characters as they regress back to this way of behaving every other episode or moment it seems at the very least. Sorry (not sorry), but the truth hurts.
Enjoyment? That's a good laugh. It felt like a pain to suffer through. I legitimately gave it a chance and watched the entire series and almost all of the movies at this point, yet it still falls short on all fronts. 3/10
Overall 4-5/10. Like I said, it's a one and done.
I may sound harsh, but this is merely my opinion on the series as a whole including this movie here. I honestly cannot fathom how it received higher than a 5 on this site, let alone above an 8. As a psychologist, I do not even see any redeeming features for this. Apparently this way of thinking about the "most influential anime of all time" (as some have called it) is wrong. Please, tell me again how it affected every other anime in existence. It is your opinion only and this is mine. Cheers fanboys.
