tl;dr at the end.
As of writing this review I have read the first volume of the LN.
Genjitsu de Love Comedy Dekinai to Dare ga Kimeta? is a rom-com light novel series that follows Nagasaki Kouhei, a high school first-year weeb whose goal is to get a harem and become the protagonist of a rom-com light novel.
Yes, that's right. Nagasaki Kouhei is a rom-com light novel protagonist who is trying to become a rom-com light novel protagonist. Very meta. Ha ha ha.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what oversaturation does to a genre. Just as isekai anime are becoming more and more self-aware, so too are rom-coms.
...
But that's a discussion for another time. You're here because you want to hear more about this series.
But, yeah, basically Nagasaki turns out to be this guy who's really good at research and data analysis, and he puts these skills to work in trying to artificially turn his life into a rom-com. He stalks observes people to determine how well they'll fit into typical rom-com roles (main heroine, best friend, etc.) and he sets up scenarios that would be fitting for a rom-com. Stuff like that.
Things don't always go as planned though, despite all his preparations. This is where the story begins—when Nagasaki attempts to confess to his designated Main Heroine, he meets Uenohara Ayano a.k.a. Best Girl instead. One thing leads to another, and she ends up aiding Nagasaki in his rom-com endeavors.
Story:
Let's be real—the average rom-com enjoyer isn't really looking for a great story. When I pick up a rom-com, it's usually because I need fuel for my fantasies of cute anime JKs. And in that department, this series does a pretty good job.
Its premise is just interesting enough to not be too boring. The scenarios feel, for the most part, pretty standard, but good enough that the more interesting character interactions can do the rest of the heavy-lifting. The story itself is at times a bit ridiculous, but other times shockingly well thought-out. One of the greatest joys of this book was the small mystery element, which paid off big-time with a reveal at the end. Maybe I just had really low expectations, but I was not expecting a payoff of that caliber from a rom-com light novel. It definitely elevated the story in an innovative fashion.
Characters:
RabuDame's main attraction, of course, is Uenohara Ayano. You might be able to tell from her expression, but she's the indifferent, blunt type of girl who will call you 'gross' and 'creepy' if you're being gross and creepy. I consider this general archetype to be the modern tsundere—because it takes the core part of what makes a tsundere attractive to us (that being the 'thrill of the chase') and puts it into a more realistic shell.
Anyway, I'm super into Uenohara Ayano. She's intelligent, fulfills my fantasies of being verbally assaulted, and has a cute character design. She nearly single-handedly carries the entire story in my opinion.
Okay, so what about the other characters? They either haven't been developed very much yet or aren't that interesting, so let's speed run this.
Main Heroine (Kiyosato Mei) - I really like her so far, but she's more of a distant character in the first volume. She and the protagonist have great banter, and she's got the "friends with everyone and no one"-type of vibe that a lot of my favorite characters have. Really interested in how her story unfolds. She's also very cute.
Protagonist (Nagasaki Kouhei) - He's really, really cringe at times. But that's par for the course in a lot of these rom-coms.
Best Friend (Tokiwa Something) - Don't remember his name. Personality amounts to being an athlete/simp at the moment.
Capable Ikemen (Torisawa Something) - Capable Ikemen.
Senpai (Uhhhh I forgor) - Passionate about the student council.
Conclusion
This series is of a quality that I do expect it to get an anime adaptation soon. So if you want to stay ahead of the mainstream plebeians, I definitely recommend you check out the series. It's dumb fun, has a cool mystery side-plot, and the girls are cute. Need I say more?

Review:
Personal Opinions
This anime was quite hilarious. I became interested on the topic of chuunibyou (aka Eighth Grader Syndrome) after I watched Steins;Gate, and combined with my curiosity on the eye-patch girl who appears quite often on the internet, it led me to watch this anime. I must say that this is one of the better slice-of-life anime I have watched, and as I write this I am watching the sequel. I was planning to write a single review for both of them...but I ended up deciding against that.
Also, during some of the sadder/slower/romantic parts of the anime I usually felt a bit bored, and I
...
think I'll go into more detail in the review.
Story: 6/10
The story was pretty interesting, although I enjoyed the first half more than the second half, for various reasons. The second half was slower paced, felt melancholy, had a heavy focus on romance between characters, and I found it lacking in the earlier comedy. The romance wasn't bad....but (in my opinion) it wasn't that great either. But more on that in the 'characters' section.
Like lots of slice of life anime, the anime was mostly episodic, while the story's main plot progressed in the background. The last few episodes were when things started to get a bit more into the genre of drama and some heartstrings were being pulled. Now...the last few episodes weren't bad, but, like the romance, not as good as I hoped. I think I was supposed to feel emotional or something, but I only really thought two things: "You kids are making a biiiiig mistake here!" and "I'm kinda bored". The second half wasn't that bad - I just didn't like it as much as the first half, and I felt the drama was rather sudden, though story-wise it made sense. The problem was that all of the comedy that I absolutely loved about the series kind of died out after the drama hit, and that was something that, I as the viewer, was not ready for. I felt that this was something that hurt the series, and that it was a bit unnecessary. The story ended on a satisfactory note though, so you don't need to worry about that.
So basically, the story was great in comedy and made me laugh a lot, the romance felt a bit awkward to me, and the last few episodes I was feeling rather frustrated at the characters and what they were doing, but it ended quite nicely.
Characters: 7/10
For the most part the characters were pretty good. I thought the main character, Togashi, was a bit lame honestly, but whenever we got to see his chuunibyou side it was really cool. The female lead, Rikka, was also a bit boring without her chuunibyou personality, but I think it made sense.
The romance....I felt like they didn't have enough synergy for it to be interesting, and I think their relationship is kind of relationship that siblings would have (excluding the blushing and pinky-holding). The fact that Rikka both looks and acts younger than Togashi doesn't help much either.
My favourite character was probably the 'Dark Flame Master', but sadly he had a exceedingly short amount of screen time. ):
Art: 8/10
Love, Chuunibyou and Other Delusions offers some pretty nice art for the most part. Of course, money-saving tactics are present, but there have been a few interesting scenes where someone in the background is moving around in which otherwise would've been a still picture. I thought that made it a bit more interesting, and it shows that they didn't just drop a still picture scene in the middle of the anime.
Something on the more shocking side of things, the battle animation actually looks really cool. Yes, BATTLE ANIMATION. IN A SLICE OF LIFE ANIME.
Perhaps my only complaint is that the characters were all drawn to look so young. I couldn't take the romance seriously because their faces are soo child-like!
Sound: 8/10
No complaints here, but nothing particularly caught my attention. The OP and ED were pretty nice, and fit the anime pretty well. Same with the soundtracks.
I really liked the voice actor for 'Dark Flame Master'. It was really cool.
Conclusion:
Final Notes:
It was a pretty nice anime, and I would say that it was worth my time, just because of the chuunibyou. I really like chuunibyou stuff now after watching Steins;Gate and this anime....If only I had the guts to scream "BANISHMENT, THIS WORLD" for my whole school to hear!

Review:
Personal Opinions
Honestly, I actually really enjoyed this anime. I didn't watch this knowing who the creator (Jun Maeda) was, and I didn't even think of Angel Beats! during this anime, which is a bit strange because Charlotte and Angel Beats! are quite similar. I actually thought that this anime was better than Angel Beats!. I'm also writing this review against the surprising amount of negative reviews.
Story: 8/10
This anime's tone was very strange. I didn't read the description of the anime before going in, and only saw a few pictures. I kind of thought it was going to be a bit of a darker story...which
...
wasn't exactly wrong, but the first episode completely threw me off. The anime started out seeming like a cringe-worthy slice-of-life comedy anime. And if the anime continued like that, I definitely would've stopped watching. In the next few episodes, the anime got interesting enough that I didn't leave, but they weren't spectacular or anything. It still gave off that slice-of-life feel. However I got really interested when the anime suddenly took a dark turn, turning the anime into a completely different genre...and then it changed back again. And then it got dark again. Basically, the tone of the anime was rather inconsistent, which, in most cases, I dislike. But for some reason this sudden changing of tone didn't affect my opinion of the anime in any way, and I really have no complaints about it.
I enjoyed the story. The first half was nice, the second half made me cry (just a little bit at the end!). Being the kind of person I am, I enjoyed the second half better. My only are with the first and last episodes. The first episode, as I mentioned above, made me cringe. As for the last episode, I think it should've been stretched into two episodes. I don't have as much of a problem with the pacing of the final episode as other people do, but I think they should've extended the beginning of the finale and the ending of the finale, putting it into two episodes. However, I've never seen a 14-episode anime, and honestly I'm pretty fine with the last episode being how it is.
Yes, this show does have minor plot holes and convenient occurrences. But, seeing as this is mainly a drama/slice of life anime, none of this should affect your experience greatly. The purpose of this show isn't to create the next Steins;Gate. It's to make you laugh, to make you cry. The show wants to use drama to entertain you. You can't watch a slice-of-life drama and then call it stupid for having bad mystery elements. You can't watch a shounen action anime and call it boring because it has no romance.
Charlotte is most definitely not a ripoff of Angel Beats!, despite the numerous similarities. Calling Charlotte a ripoff of Angel Beats! is like calling Log Horizon a ripoff of SAO, or Kabaneri a ripoff of Attack on Titan. Despite having similar tones and events, Charlotte is most definitely not a ripoff of Angel Beats!.
Characters: 7/10
The main character's personality was a bit strange, as his personality is a bit obscure at times - but, he really does have a personality. He is not some bland, boring male protagonist, and I thoroughly enjoy how he changes throughout the series.
Nao, the female lead, has an enjoyable personality as well. The way she reacts to different things helps you understand what kind of person she is.
However, the characters in Charlotte are definitely not the best. A lot of them are lacking in character development and are mainly defined by one or two traits. If some of the main characters got more screen time and character development, this anime would've been a lot better.
Even so, the characters were, for the most part, interesting and it's not like I hated the characters or anything.
Art: 10/10
Pretty darn good. It's not the best animation I've seen for a show, but it's still really good. Enough for a ten.
Sound: 9/10
Wait, let me go listen to everything again. Brb.
Sorry I'm back. For some reason I only tend to enjoy the music after I finish the anime, unless I really really like the music. So the OP was actually quite fitting for the anime, more so for the second half than the first half. The ED for most of the anime, 'Yake Ochinai Tsubasa' also really fits. I'm definitely getting both of these songs on Osu. The rest of the music was nice as well. The second ED, used for episodes 3-4, fits those specific episodes quite well. The third ED, episode 6 (geez this episode...) was just beautiful instrumental music. The fourth ED, for the finale, was a nice, mellow ending for the series. No complaints, really.
Conclusion:
Final Notes:
My rating for this is actually lower than how I would rate it if I just based my review on purely how much I enjoyed it. It's a really nice anime.
