Well, here we go (for the second time, thanks MAL). I am writing this review from 5 episodes in for the sake of addressing the controversy. Many will say this anime is bad or that you are a bad person for enjoying it due to the rape themes it entails. However the truth is very different from that. This anime does not glorify rape in anyway, it's absolutely horrifying to watch and sets the tone of the anime and the harsh reality of the world extremely effectively. Not only this but it makes you feel the disgust and hatred for the Goblins the Goblin Slayer
...
feels. However the general masses can't handle something so confrontational and need everything to be catered to their extreme sensitivities so they label this anime as abhorrent. If you don't like something, don't watch it. Something shown somewhat explicitly is not an indication of sexualization, it's a directorial choice to shove the disgusting reality of this world in the viewer's face. Aside from that I'd say everything else about the anime is pretty great!
Story: 8
The story has begun with a slow build, developing the characters which I enjoy. I like that it has taken it's time letting you settle into the atmosphere of the anime and getting to know the characters. It's a nice subversion of expectations, taking what are usually weak monsters and showing they have power in numbers and are vile creatures. I don't think the characters need to be thrust on some grand quest or have some huge end goal for it to be interesting, the characters are interesting enough. It keeps the tone mostly dark, aside from when the group is with him or the story switches off to side characters. I'm excited to see how these characters will play into the story later.
Art: 7
Nothing groundbreaking here, pretty good stuff but not amazing. Not a huge fan of how often they use CG for the MC but it looks better than most CG you see in anime and generally isn't too noticeable due to most scenes being at night/in caves etc. Aside from that I love the design of MC's armour.
Sound: 7
Yet again nothing special here. Nothing that caught my ear and made me think "Ooh, that was powerful" or anything like that. Although I would say the OP and ED for this anime are a head above the rest, I've been loving them.
Character: 7
Would've given this an 8 because to be honest I think I would have preferred if Goblin Slayer and the priest stayed as a 2-man party. The other characters are fun but it's jarring when they're inserted into the anime with their typical anime tropes and lightheartedness. They have kept a good balance so as to not ruin the atmosphere too much but I think it would have been better if these characters were kept more grounded and they continued to play off the heartlessness of Goblin Slayer and the virtue of the priest.
Enjoyment: 10
As much as t this anime has it's faults I've been enjoying it extremely and it has thrust me right back into watching anime again. I love the gritty, dark world, the brutality, the stoic MC and the vengeful feelings.
Overall: 8
Overall I'd say this is a pretty nicely wrapped up dark fantasy package that I would highly recommend. I'd reserve 9 or 10 for some of the truly greatest anime but for being unique and extremely enjoyable this one gets an 8 in my books.
