It's bad anime. It is below averange level for grown-up people.
I didin't read the manga, I don't know how's with it, but this anime is bad. If you haven't watched it, you can of course but I tell you - go with some other series with high rating. You won't waste a day of your life this way.
Why?
I don't know what do people that claims it to be 10/10 see in it, maybe it's because they loved the manga or they watched it in school and feel a sentiment.
Well I didn't read it and I'm not in schoolage, and here's how it looks for me:

Good thing in it for me at least is medieval setting, knights, kings, castles and all - wich can be in some degree enjoyable.
Now bad things:
It's not so easy to stand the old-fashioned art and poor animation it has but it's somehow understandable as this series has its years (although it's not SO old). Anyway it could be not a flaw if the plot and the feeling were good. (or awesome like in Cowboy Beebop)
But the story is infantile. The unvincible hero with posture of a bodybuilder, silly and kind of funny combat scenes, flat dialogues, not much of depth - what's this? He-man? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I bet I would be enjoing this like hell... if I was 10 years old. I would write in this review it's kind of cartoon for kids and if you're a teenager go ahead and watch it but what with all this bloody violence and the final rape scene? Then for who this anime is except Berserk manga fans? It's just poor.
I could count many examples of its silliness but take this one. What's with this name of the main character - Guts? Give me a break. With his posture and overall macho image in anime it would've been good if this series were mentioned to be humorous. But it attempts to be serious. And he's running, swinging his big sword, defeating countless groups of enemies by himself. Again - stuff for kids. If there were some humorous thing about it, some wink or just another interesting things in this anime it could've been different. But there's no such thing!
Opening theme is silly for my taste so my personal sound raiting goes down a little too.
In summary it can be a little entertaining but it absolutely can't be compared to other high rated anime like Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Beebop, Genshiken or whatsoever, you get the point. It doesn't deserve even 8/10 and it's for sure no masterpiece.

Ok I've managed to watch it all, can I puke now? It would be more because of stupidity of this show than of how digusting it is.
It's all and nothing - and this is bad. Lots of extremely brutal and sadistic voilence mixed with sweet, silly, pink-haired loli girls, humorous ecchi from time to time, romance, perversed sadistic images,childhood friends and so on - and nothing good as a result.
The brutality of this thing is extreme and very soon it reaches the point where poor, non-deep and forced plot becomes an excuse for showing another and another extremely bloody and cruel scenes. If you are

fragile - absolutely don't watch it. It contains tons of innocent people teared apart, shooted, physically and mentally tortured, litlle girl with both her arms and legs cut off and it's all mostly for nothing. Not for a good plot nor for delivering any valuable thoughts. You watch a few episodes and you think you've seen all already but in next one there's new cruel idea that will make you regret it.
The story is in many moments predictable, in some way linear and it repeats the same schemes a couple of times. And large part of it doesn't make much sense - the things that happen are unlike to happen, still usually you know they turn out like this because you get used to this forced by makers, pretty nonsensical direction the story goes. Characters act irrationally and it's just dumb. There is so many illogical things I can't stand it. Also the further series goes, the more retrospecions there are in it including repeated scenes from the earlier episodes wich can take long and becomes annoying.
Art is on pretty good level, animation is not brilliant, characters are sometimes so undifferent that is hard to recognize who is who especially in black and white retrospective scenes, their faces are pretty the same. Mentioning black and white - that's exactly what their personalities are. The opening theme is interesting but opening alone shouldn't count to final rating. And this is about only melody you'll hear as a background music to the scenes.
This anime is not valuable, basically it's sick shit with poor, pretty illogical plot, rather flat characters and unused potential.
In summary this is:
- flushes of blood
- making explode or cutting off peoples heads and limbs
- nude little girls covered with blood and treated with cruelty
- more cruelty, really awful
- repeating scheme: oh how cute, how cute - BAM! - bloodbath and innocent victim (aside from it's sick - it gets lame boring too)
- pink-haired girl saing only "nyu"
- pretty silly loli-harem plot wich eventually turns out to fit the rest in no way
- and nothing more.

Short review for you to not have to read unnecessary information about character haircuts and stuff but to know what kind of anime this is.
Well it's extremely voilent, there is very pleasant art, pathetic story and a lot of blood gushing from cut off limbs.
Story is dumb, childish and I've had an impression that another plot ideas was made up by the author from episode to episode to keep it running (like, literally: "Oh!, there will be a mighter enemy that we didn't mentioned anything about yet!" "Oh! Things aren't like that, they will be like this from now, cause I didn't think about it
...
earlier!")
There's no cosequence, who will lose or win particular fight depends entirely on whim of the author just like the plot changes.
Lots of blood from the beginning quickly turns into extreme and sick voilence scenes. And it's pretty much about it - anime made just to show brutality and blood, because there's nothing more in it.
So it's story on a kindergarten level with sick voilence on adult's only level.
Don't let yourself be tricked by beautiful character art (wich can't be said about animation) and don't watch it. It can only litter your mind.

A calm episode without zombies in wich HotD crew spends a day on the small island's beach. Ecchi and humorous.
But it's not even worth mentioning. It's not very funny and it's not very hot.
The story doesn't evolve in it in any way nor the relations between characters. It's pure and silly ecchi breast action involving all female main characters halucinating, but it's not even interesting.
The only reason I could think of that somebody could watch this OVA is for seeing Miss Shizuka's nipples. :] Fortunately it's short and there's only one episode so I didn't have to watch more of this kind of OVA's to
...
check if the story will evolve in any way.

The first two episodes looked like it could be something pretty nice.
So they may be worth watching, especially ep.2. has some funny moments and interesting characters. If you'd like to watch some light, a little ecchi action-anime you can go ahead with ep.1. and 2. (Although if you don't like much blood and brutality - rather DON'T.)
After this two episodes it goes worse and worse and evetually becomes much less interesting. There are many many stereotypical ideas, so much dumb but not funny ecchi that it's boring sometimes, often lack of logic, so unreal and unlogical actions that it begins to hurt eventually and (SPOILER:)
...
I counted on some interesting not-the-same-as-in-all-zombie-movies ending at least, but there's practically no story ending at all. (END OF SPOILER)
As for the story: Story for what's going on in the zombie-infected world is fair and logical, I also liked that I could see what's going on with the US president, at a satelite and in few other places in the world - not only now's the main characters doing. On the other hand main characters relations - wich are more important - are often unlogical, unexplained and left in the middle of their evolution.
Art and animation: are pretty.
Sound: You can't complain.
Caharacters: are in my opinion strong side of this anime. It's interesting to see so typical school/ecchi-anime set of characters in the zombie-invaded world.
So it can be fun to watch but there's plenty of better stuff.
But I have to admit - It's better and a little less stereotypical than all american zombie-movies I've watched.
