This is my explanation for the scoring system for My Anime List.
Firstly, the way I score these titles is mostly based on pure enjoyment, not in terms of their quality. For example, I gave "Chaos; HEAd" a score of 8/10 and a 7/10 to "5 Centimeters Per Second" but I think "5 Centimeters Per Second" is a better Anime. However I gave "Chaos; HEAd" a higher score because I enjoyed it more. Enjoyment dosent necessarily mean I felt happy watching it, It could make me feel very depressed or angry. It really means how much it could have made me think/engaged/feel/entertaining etc it's mostly like how much of an experience it was for me. However, there are and always will be exceptions.
Secondly, I mostly if a series is part of a franchise I consider the whole franchise to be one single entity and score it as such from what I have already seen such as all of the "Fullmetal Alchemist" series that I have seen so far I see as one thing same with "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and its movie "End Of Evangelion" (because duh) method extends to my favorites. But there are exeptions like the first season of "Knights Of Sidonia" having a 6/10 while season 2 having a 8/10. However, there are and always will be exceptions.
Thirdly, the don't take the exact scores to seriously as what I actually think/feel because for me they aren't that well defined but I do try go by what MAL defines them as.
In conclusion, if you have any questions please ask (like out of the two Anime with the same scores do I like better, the answers may surprise you) and please don't get your (Insert Whatever Here) in a swist about my method. I don't think that this is the correct way to do it. This is just how I personally feel like doing it do things. Besides I might change my system someday if I feel I want to be more critical about it.
