Probably because putting the emphasis more on the atmosphere and the setting is the thing that caused a bit of lack of characterization in Shinkai's characters IMO. Have to agree with your argument tho, as for this time both Taki's and Mitsuha's characterization actually fits on how should regular high school students act in an atmosphere-rich movie of yours truly Shinkai.
Maybe it's just me, but Sora Yori actually made it into a very finely-made anime because of Jukki Hanada who also participated in Steins;Gate several years prior. Combine his writing style (although there are no thriller scenes in Sora Yori, lol) and Atsuko Ishizuka's impeccable directing, a whole new level of perfection has been made in last season.
How do you think Steins;Gate 0 would fare in this season, so far?
I read that your first experience with Shinkai's works was during a weekly film night. Did they happen to show anime movies occasionally? And to be more precise, it's a Shinkai's movie.
Seen some fine choices that I liked so much too here (Sora Yori, Steins;Gate, Koe no Katachi, and Kimi no Na wa). Do you choose them for their ambient setting, somehow? While I prefer their very finely made and fleshed-out characters. Looking forward for your response!
If I were more level headed about this, and frankly I'm not, it'd have a higher score for what it is.
