Mononoke

Even though Mononoke takes place in a classical, japanese setting, the two stories have a lot in common. First of all, they are both horror tales, but neither relies on actually scaring the viewer. You are afraid because of the atmosphere, the haunting music, the weird art style, the unknown, shady parts of the world. In both cases, we know little of the protagonist, beside the fact that he has a unique style, strong connection to the hunted creatures (vampires, demons - it is said that D is a half-vampire, and it is hinted that Medicine Seller might be a half-kitsune.), and a strange, hard-to-follow character developement, where they get a new perspective, and greater understanding. And of course, in both cases, we have mysteries to solve - despite being horroristic, with enjoyable fight scenes, both stories give a chance to think, try to understand the motivations.
