I personally like Kino's design and yay! for the "rare" female protagonist! But that alone shouldn't be the deciding factor.
Jumping straight to the story;
I've watched "a few" episodes of the 2003 version and I would say that I prefer the reboot (2017 version). I dropped the 2003 version after a few episodes because I didn't really like how they did the show.
In the 2003 version, I personal found that the stories were a bit "too vague" (with morals neither here nor there...verging more towards negative I would say), not to mention that Kino was acting indifferent even in the face of injustice (not sure
...
about later episodes of the 2003 version). The 2003 version seems to be pushing this thing about humans being immoral/evil, and "that's just how humans are and we should let them be"...which I'm strongly against. Well, I guess that's to be expected from the theme of the show which is "The world is not beautiful, therefore it is."
I'm not sure about others, but I find that Kino and Hermes in the 2003 version quite annoying as most of their dialogues seemed pretty empty and at some points had questionable morals and reasoning...
Pros of the 2017 version as a standalone:
- Kino having more depth as a moralistic person. I like how in this version it clearly shows what Kino is okay with and what she's not okay with. Thankfully, so far (up to ep 5) there hasn't been any questionable reasoning by Kino.
- Hermes says questionable things once in awhile but I'm glad that the show made it clear that its just Hermes's point of view as a motorrad / machine.
- I like how this show highlights humans being evil and that oftentimes criminals/evil people should be gotten rid-of to maintain peace.
Cons of the 2017 version as a standalone:
- Kino seems somewhat overpowered at times compared to the average civilian but then again there are some other characters in the show which are somewhat overpowered as well...so I guess I could just brush it off as something that just goes on in Kino's universe, as in if you're skilled, you're going to be somewhat super skilled at times.. Thankfully most of the time it's done somewhat realistically.
- Some episodes feel empty. As in it works as a story but doesn't have much meaning behind it.
- There are some logic holes here and there. Thankfully not much.
- Oddly enough, Kino's sex seems to be a "thing" in this reboot. I'm not sure why as it just seems off... Well I guess that's to be expected when most people seem to be really into finding out what genitalia a person has...and assuming that they would act differently based on certain preconceptions about their sex...
Overall Enjoyment:
I'm still enjoying it for now because it's rare for a show to highlight corrupted humans and actually encourage getting rid of them. And I personally enjoy watching Kino in action XD. Hopefully the show continues to be decent.
Rating: Wanted to give 10, because it's rare and hard to find a show doing well when it comes to human nature and morality... but sadly there are some major logic flaws in some episodes... So it'll be a 9 for me.

Ugh...dropping Sailor Moon Crystal after episode 15..it's far from female empowerment. It's becoming really toxic.. It's worse than some of those overly male-glorifying shows. Not to mention the directing is getting worse.
The main protagonist, Usagi, gets super overly-glorified despite having some huge character flaws (being irresponsible etc), and her friends are just there to prop her up and praise her all the time.
I don't like how they are enforcing "toxic hierarchy" in this show and how it focuses on how there is this one "best girl" who everyone likes.
There is also this underlying current that the author doesn't really care about her friends
...
and the "priority" is to be the "best girl" who is born a princess, who gets the best prince, who has her other female friends there to serve, praise and follow her and to be the girl who saves everyone (physically and spiritually) with her kindness together with her prince.. - which pretty much sums up the show so far.
She is born gifted, has godlike powers yet still insists that she's normal..?
Additionally, guess what? The main male in this show gets even more glorification than in male-orientated shows. -_-#
I hope females will not watch this show and pick up such toxic mentality.

"If the good people stay alive, the world would be that much better." - Episode 9
Just sharing some info on this anime because it's so underrated. This anime definitely deserves more love and attention. 💖💖💖
Do not be fooled by the cutesy sparkly cover art and anime art 💖. They are cute and sparkly, but they really do touch on pretty deep subjects pertaining to discrimination (be it sexism/racism) and human nature (including religion, superstitions etc.). It actually saddens me quite a bit comparing their universe to ours....
I also love the techniques and subtlety they used to deliver such heavy message but still managing to keep
...
it lighthearted. If you've been fighting for justice be it against racism, sexism or any other kind of discrimination, you would be delighted to know that's this anime does an awesome job pointing out the flaws in our society while still having the show be entertaining.
Definitely one of the best anime so far when it comes to morality and human nature. 💖
Also, the best anime for this season in my opinion. 💖

Hmm....I'll just keep it short. Ajin Season 1 was one of my favorite shows with almost no logic holes. Everything felt real, realistic, gritty and most importantly made sense most of the time.
Season 2 was a huge letdown. A total change of mood. There were logic holes everywhere. It got worse as the show went on. There were only THREE major events/operations in the whole season. The government barely got any spotlight, and whenever they did, they failed most of the time. Plot conveniences everywhere.
Pacing, content and directing was horrible. I needed to watch it at double the speed..
Shounen Hero glorification left and right. It's
...
mostly about Nagai Kei becoming a "SUPERHERO". If it's not glorifying Nagai, they were glorifying Satou, if not Satou, it's the Tosaki, if not him, it's the tech guy, if its not him then some other dude, so on so forth.
Apparently the tech dude can hack anything and can make weapons from the future! SO MUCH INTELLIGENCE~! The whole of season two was Nagai Kei focused. Nagai Kei VS Satou to be precise because apparently they are just "so intelligent" that they are only a match for each other. Even the government is no match for Satou, but Nagai is. Much HAPPINESS~! (You can already guess what the last showdown would be >.>) Oh, and Nagai is so intelligent that he ends up briefing "military operations", taking over Tosaki's role.
Ah, but they made one dude (Kou) in the team "extraordinarily unrealistically" dumb for..let's see.. comedy? Like seriously..there are better ways to do comedy then to put someone in the sacrificial dumb clown role..
They only had one major token female character, and she barely got any development nor proper screen time. And when she does, it always about her screwing something up, being ordered to shut up or being shouted at etc. I feel really bad (and pissed) for how they handled Shimomura...And another Ajin female which showed up only briefly as she got similar treatment.
Also, trigger warning for those who care; Please take note that despite the modern age of anime, they can't help but throw in some gendered sexist insults here and there towards females. Sigh..~ (Rough eg: "You're weak, like a girl.") Season 1 was fairly neutral because females barely even appeared but they couldn't help themselves from making it worse for females in Season 2, could they? >.> ...~
Overall, season 2 was a huge disappointment and it felt like a badly done Hollywood + Shounen Hero glorification movie, but spread out to 13 episodes.. I ended up spending more time discussing how bad the show was (pointing out holes etc) with a friend during every episode compared to watching the show..Ugh..~

I purposely created an account just to drop a review and rating because I believe this anime is really underrated.
The cover art (and possibly synopsis at a certain site) lead me to believe that this was a shallow anime about card games and cute girl sexual fanservice for males, and therefore I did not even try this anime when it was released until recently when I accidentally bumped into it.
A definitely must-watch anime if one is into good unique stories and realistic characters! :D
Story 10/10:
An amazing masterpiece I would say! Events and contents were definitely fresh and unique. Each individual character feels real.
...
WIXOSS is more of a character-driven story but it is also supported by a really intriguing and well-thought-of setting. Having the story driven by characters makes it much more interesting because the characters have choices and their choices affect the story. Not many things are forced upon the characters.
Definitely NOT a copy of Madoka. Anyone saying that clearly does not know what they are talking about. There are similarities but definitely not a copy. The similarities are "What is your wish?" and stuff/wishes not going as predicted upon being selected as a participant in the WIXOSS game. The entire wish system, battle system and the rules are much more complicated compared to Madoka. Whether or not bad or good stuff happens, or whether a wish will or will not be granted and how it is granted, highly depends on certain situation/condition and is it not as straightforward as Madoka.
What makes this story unique is that not all characters go through the same route and not all the outcomes are the same. There are harder choices to be made and more realistic and gritty events in WIXOSS compared to Madoka. It's not all about characters suffering because of "story". And definitely not just bad things happening just because it is a "dark story". This story touches quite a bit on what it means to be human, learning about one's desire, understanding oneself, humans' interactions and relationships with each other and how each individual character views the world.
Good things do happen in the anime, which delivers a much more powerful punch when things are somewhere in between and bad...This show is somewhat like roller coaster ride. A much easier explanation would be, WIXOSS's story graph is more chaotic but Madoka's is more linear.
I'm not saying that Madoka is bad. It is definitely a masterpiece of its own BUT it is not fair to say that this anime, WIXOSS is a copy of Madoka. It's like saying Gundam and Macross are the same because "mecha" or Death Note and Code Geass are the same because "plotting". Just because this anime has "wishes granting disaster" as part of their theme, and just because all the main cast are females, it does NOT make this a copy of Madoka. FRIENDLY REMINDER, most shounen anime have a mostly/fully male cast, wanting to be strong and mamoru(protect) others, yet we don't see people emphasizing that they are copying each other.
All in all, it was a pretty intriguing, interesting, brain grinding, fun anime to watch. :)
Bonus points for a few touching scenes in this anime <3.
The only thing about the story is that perhaps the storytelling/directing could be improved-upon. It might just be me but with the contents they have in the story, somehow I got a feeling it could be done better. It started of freshly interesting then there was a slight dip in the anime quality around the mid part, but it quickly picked up its pace and soared its way into awesomeness. :D
Awesomeness aside, some did point out that they can't relate to the characters and I totally agree with it. I do root for the characters, but I can't seem to really get into the character and be enthusiastic about cosplaying them. After giving it some thought, I figured that it might be due to not having enough screen time for characters' monologue or for the character to tell their story from their point of view. The story of the characters are usually are being told by either another character or by the story showing what happens. This part could definitely be refined more.
One annoying thing (thankfully just a bit) about this anime is that it has a bit of suggestive sexual fan service. Suggestive words carefully picked to make it sound as if the characters want to have sex with each other or that they are turned on, random blushing and gasping while what they are actually doing is just the card battle and so on. But as-mentioned, thankfully the total of those scenes for the whole season is probably just around 5-7 minutes.
Character 9/10
A character driven anime, and it certainly does not disappoint! Good characters means that you could swap the gender of the characters and it would not affect the story, and WIXOSS is one of the very few who managed to pull it off! Hats off to Okada Mari. <3
Despite not being able to relate on a personal level, I could definitely relate as a human being. I really enjoyed how all the main characters are portrayed like real humans. No/not much stereotyping in this anime which is a huge bonus point. :D They are not perfect, some are mean, some are selfish but it is portrayed in an understandable manner.
It's always nice to see characters doubting their flaws and coming to terms and/or understanding their failings whether they decide to fix them or not. But the main point is that the show shows it as a failing and that decisions comes with consequences, may they be good or bad.
Art 7/10
The design of the characters are kind of plain. Definitely could have put in more effort in the designs, especially for the LRIG/characters in the cards. Environment and effects are standardly nice. Nothing much out of the ordinary.
Music/sound 5/10
I was rather disappointed by the OST for this anime. There is nothing special, and it doesn't stand out. It doesn't even sound particularly nice. The opening was somewhat nice, but the ending was okay. Music and OSTs are very important terms of having people remember the anime. They should have definitely put in more effort in the OSTs.
Would I recommend watching it?
Yes! :D
