Having been unable to rate each component of anime separately, I've decided to create a rating system which combines fair proportion of anime's consistency, audiovisual art and my personal feelings, that pulled together affect the rating. I've managed to make one that has been doing quite well so far. It is based on MAL's naming of specific rate numbers (10 for a masterpiece, 9 for a great anime, etc.) because raw numbers themselves are too abstract to have a clear meaning.
The system itself isn't as complicated as it may seem. It relies on comparing an anime to a prepared pattern. Firstly, a base rate is determined and then it is modified by a few factors (bifid due to the mathematical issue of preventing from common overrating). The pattern includes options for both typical and experimental titles.
8 – an interesting and consistent plot; well-created characters; a stated atmosphere (comedy is fun, fantasy is fantasy, hybrid has stated proportions) / a well-made, brilliant experiment that is impossible to forget
7 – an interesting plot with minor exceptions; entertaining characters without major failings; a stated atmosphere with slight lapses / a good experiment with an interesting outcome
6 – a plot with a few weaker points though able to induce itself further; schematic but easy-to-like characters; a loose atmosphere, preserved at crucial times, though / an experiment that would be better if some things were changed but still very potential
5 – a typical, nothing-to-do-here plot, forced to go on from time to time; schematic characters; no traces of a stated atmosphere, though there aren't any absurdal deviations / an experiment that makes nothing new
4 – a dull, naive or uninteresting plot but still having some positives; characters annoying at times; a clearly uneven atmosphere, sometimes spoiling the reception / an experiment giving rather bad feelings
3 – a definitely spoiled plot; incoherent, frequently annoying characters; an atmosphere spoilng reception at crucial times / an experiment that has gone far beyond good taste
2 – a plot barely having any sense; appaling characters without any positives; an atmosphere leaping from one extreme to another / an experiment that shouldn't have been done
1 – a broken and fully random plot; characters spoiling anything left; a chaotic atmosphere preventing from understanding anything / an experiment that makes one wonder only about the state of authors' mind
Halves (7.5, 6.5, etc.) are used if the base rate isn't clear.
Modifications part 1
+1 if anime has perfectly made or very unusual (positively) graphics (+0.5 if the base=8; +0.75 if the base=7.5)
+0,5 if anime has really good or interesting graphics (+0 if the base=8; +0.25 if the base=7.5)
-0,5 if anime has clearly bad and slapdash graphics
-1 if anime has graphics that spoils reception
+1 if anime has fantastic music and sound (+0.5 if the base=8; +0.75 if the base=7.5)
+0,5 if anime has some well-done pieces of music, including OP and ED (+0 if the base=8; +0.25 if the base=7.5)
-0,5 if anime has distracting, repetitive sound or there is often annoying silence
-1 if anime has sound that spoils reception
Modifications part 2
+1 if anime is unusually enjoyable; is brilliant; is definitely classical (+0.5 if after modifications part 1 the rate=9 or 8.5 or 8.25)
+0,5 if anime is very enjoyable; is positively distinct (+0 if after modifications part 1 the rate=9, 8.5 or 8.25)
-0,5 if anime isn't enjoyable due to reasons other than in the base; has an arguable end
-1 if anime contains things clearly against one's taste
+1 if anime definitely exceeds its nature (positively); has a universal message; is based on higher values
-1 if anime contains gibberish; its message is completely unclear
If there is a half in the result, the rate is rounded down. If there's X.25, the rate is rounded down, if there's X.75 – rounded up.
Finally, due to quite big difference between "great" and "masterpiece" rates, every "10" rate must be acknowledged as a true masterpiece after rating the title. If not, the rate is "9".
If you have any commentary or suggestion concerning this rating system, please let me know as I'd be really glad to get some feedback.
