I wanted to like this show so much because I love thoughtful, dystopian psychological thrillers - but this show fell flat for me. I gave it a 6 because it isn't terrible (some people love it, and others just don't) but at about episode 18 I didn't even care to finish the show. I only finished it because I wanted to see how it ended, but even the ending was predictable. I won't go too in depth about the premise, because this is one of those shows you have to watch, and a review will only give you so much. The best thing about this
...
show is the world building. The world they live in and the curiosity surrounding it was the main reason I continued watching.
The show started off great. You see five children with psychokinesis abilities, living in an unusual world that is eerie due to the unknown events happening around them caused by the adults. Due to the important scenes that occurred in the first 3 episodes, I figured the entirety of the show would base its plot on what was happening to the children, why things were the way they were, and the most important question when watching shows like this: is it morally right to commit the acts the town was committing and how would the future look like with our lead children gaining this knowledge of the past? The show continued to slowly unravel the dark history of the town, and past Power users, and once they answer the questions you are wondering as a viewer that is it. They don't really touch on the main theme anymore and they just continue to an arc that is COMPLETELY different than what you were just watching.
Granted, I do not mind time skips or multiple arcs when they are done correctly, but this show throws you into an arc about Rats and other monsters (who refer to the power users as God), which to me was so random and did not really spice up the essential plot. It was just really predictable of their purpose. There is a character in the show named Shun who I thought was beneficial to the story because he was showing signs of what they refer to as a Karma Demon, so I thought they would build more on his character losing control and relate that to the main plot that STARTED the story, forcing the children and townspeople to change their views/ways or at least create a greater conflict than what actually occurred, but NO he dies, and the story moves on to random plot picks.
I think for me, once Shun died the story fell flat and when the story started focusing more on the monster rats, I was just over how choppy it was being executed. I understand the reasoning behind the monster rat arc, showing the evils of totalitarianism and how those with power will behave and once again destroy for gain. But again, the story never really answered the question (metaphorically or not) without throwing in themes that I personally feel did not benefit the actual meaning the creators were going for. It is easy to ask questions of morality that we debate on all the time for shows like this, but if it isn't presented in a manner that continues our curiosity or at least causes more thoughtful questions - what is the point??
The show isn't horrible, I just feel as if it was so choppy and inconsistent with what they were trying to tell us that is ruined the vibe of the show. I didn't feel like I was going on a journey or contemplating more questions on morals, because everything had been answered but not in a way that supported the theme. It was like a rollercoaster of small random plots and even though I could follow along and understand I still felt bored. I didn't get excited or shocked on certain elements, just meh.
The first 10-13 episodes of this show were decent, but after that it became a mess of small plots. I wish the creators focused more on the psychokinesis abilities, character development and end goal of the story related to Power - instead of trying to pretentiously tell a message about government and war.

I gave this anime an 8 because it is, in my opinion, one of the better/best rom coms out there. I love how there are no harem aspects or drawn-out love triangles, and I like how the show focuses more on friendship and monogamy. The best thing about this show is the SA members. I really liked them as friends and the show did a good job keeping me entertained, I never felt bored watching this anime.
The only small con for me was the MC Hikari. I enjoyed her character in the beginning of the show because I liked her passion towards her rival -
...
MC Kei Takishima, and I thought she was very sweet; but I just didn't feel like she grew much. 15+ episodes in and she was still acting the same - childish, dense and I caught myself rolling my eyes at how oblivious she continued to be with EVERY situation. I felt like the other characters grew on me more, I would actually not mind when she wasn't in a scene and the show focused more on characters like Jun, Ryu, Megumi, Yahiro, Akira and Tadashi - even the character Sakura. Hikari was decent though, not too bad to lower my rating; it would just be annoying when the scene would get serious and she's off screaming about a rivalry or so clueless it was laughable (I'm talking like 20+ episodes in).
Kei was amazing and one of my favorite characters. I really liked how they portrayed him as a friend, romantic interest and brother/son. I thought he was calm, flirty, sweet and so loving towards Hikari. Whenever he would call her "miss second place" it was so cute to me. It also was refreshing to see the lead guy be jealous and in love first for once. The only thing I wished the show would've did was expand MORE on their rivalry - like why exactly did they keep it up for so many years? And how did it benefit them as characters? I can kind of understand Kei's motivation but Hikari....not so much? They should have gone more in detail on their friendship. I also wish the show delved more into the side characters outside of the few episodes we got about them. I especially wanted to see more of Yahiro, Jun, Megumi and even Ryu. I guess you would have to read the manga for that, but honestly, I enjoyed the show so much I wish they would have done like Marmalade Boy and made it into 50+ episodes.
I wouldn't take this show too seriously in a good way. It is a nice, enjoyable watch. It's funny, sweet and the storylines are interesting. The characters are likable (outside of Hikari's denseness) and it's a good show to binge when you want to watch some romance.

I’ll start off by saying some people in the reviews are mad at how irresponsible and reckless the characters are with others - but that is EXACTLY how humans are in real life. Humans cheat, they lie, they break up, get together and love, get with someone while wanting someone else. It’s the nature of human beings. So, I do not dislike the show because of how it shows that nature of humans, I dislike it because it doesn’t get too deep on WHY the characters are doing those behaviors. In the show they usually say “oh because of love” okay? Cool? Yes people make
...
stupid decisions because of love, but I wanted the show to really delve into the characters insecurities/toxic behaviors - which they did not. So a lot of the decisions being made seemed shallow - but also understandable because sometimes human actions are not able to be understood.
So, that is why I’m stuck between giving this show a 7 or an 8. I decided to chose a 7 just because of how predictable the ending was and how shallow the characters were.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
ART: The art style of this show was really nice, I actually liked it and I liked the opening as well. The music was fine too.
PLOT: The plot was pretty self explanatory. Boy and girl fall in love in high school in a rural area, girl leaves to go back to the city (Tokyo), boy moves to the city to see why she left/broke up with him. Drama begins.
Characters:
Okay, so this is where my real review comes in. The main character is a male - Haruto. Haruto is the most shallow and dense guy ever!! At the beginning of the show I felt sorry for him because of how shitty the lead girl was, but as the show continues I realized what a piece of shit he was. I honestly cannot even be mad because there are guys in real life that act just like Haruto, so how can I say this is unrealistic?
When Haruto moves to Tokyo to track down his love Eba Yuzuki, he finds out the reason she broke up with him is because she made a promise to date a guy (Kazama, I will bring him up later because he is one of the only characters I actually liked) who is literally about to DIE. Eba begs Haruto not to say anything to Kazama because she wants him to die happy, but what does Haruto do? He ends up telling his best friend (don’t know how you can be best friends with someone in a month, but Kazama had such a good personality they just clicked) that Eba is the girl he is in love with and the real reason he moved to Tokyo.
So not only is he telling his friend he loves the girl he loves, he doesn’t care he’s dying. He thinks it would be unfair to not say anything and makes it a “bet” to see who can win her. I don’t know man, after this happened I was like wow, Haruto is a selfish POS. Anyway, Haruto continues to try to win her, but after Kazama dies, he literally just stops? A year passes and he ends up dating Asuka (another great character I actually liked who I will touch on later). Haruto basically takes her for granted any chance he can, and lowkey tries to get back with Eba any chance he can (Rin Eba - Yuzuki’s sister, was the cause of some of this).
I just hated how Haruto never took accountability for ANYTHING, while he literally CHEATS on his amazing girlfriend and blames Rin. He literally goes back to his childhood home KNOWING his ex that he was in love with will be there at the same time. Why TF wouldn’t you go be with Asuka and her family ? You’re girlfriend?? Haruto wanted Eba the entire time and I’m glad those two people got with each other, because honestly trash people deserve to be with trash people and I’m glad Asuka dodged a bullet.
Eba Yuzuki - I’m not gonna write too much about her, I just stopped liking her after episode 4 I think? She was so manipulative but put on this innocent girl act. It made me gag. In the show when they had flashback scenes, Haruto had a crush on a girl in the town and Eba, who literally KNEW this - kissed him when said girl was right outside the door on the phone. She did the same shit, when Haruto got with Asuka - she showed up to his fucking job, flirted with him and acted all innocent. Sis, you knew what you were doing. Instead of being an adult and communicating her feelings she waits until Haruto is in a full relationship knowing damn well he loved her/still did. She was sick and twisted, don’t get me started on how she only dated a guy because he was about to DIE. And then when her ex showed up she didn’t even have the decency to tell the guy herself, her ex ended up doing it as a way to “challenge” him. I started out liking her because she seemed sweet when she visited the countryside where Haruto first lived, but as the show went on my rating for her dropped. All she did was cry, and try to manipulate the men in her life. Her and Haruto deserve to be together tbh.
Asuka - she was sort of cringy when the show started, but as I kept watching I grew fond of her character. She cared deeply about her friends, especially Kazama, and she cared about Haruto too. I wish she got more screen time outside of her relationship with Haruto because I actually liked her. When they were dating she was such a chill, and trusting girlfriend. She also played sports and was sort of a tom boy, it was a typical storyline of the MC dating a Tom boy until he realizes his real love again for the “feminine, doe-eyed, heroine”. Asuka deserved better.
Kazama - he didn’t have a ton of screen time either and the fact that he died was all too easy for Haruto to get Eba. I wish he didn’t die and they actually made it a little harder for Haruto, but whatever. Kazama was one of the best characters because his personality was easy to connect with. He seemed like the type of person you would WANT to be friends with. Every-time he was on screen he made me smile. They did him dirty by offing him.
There are a few other characters but I honestly don’t think they are worth mentioning. Haruto has a sister who is always naked or drinking. Rin Eba was supposed to be an antagonist but she lowkey was just annoying and messy, and not in a good way. She also would flirt with Haruto and at times I think he was falling into it, which was weird as she was his loves sister. Haruto had two friends from the countryside who were decent but they didn’t have enough screen time for me to write anything about them. They were just there.
Overall, if the characters were more interesting and they dug deep into their insecurities/why they do what they do (kind of like how Scum’s Wish did) I would have given this an 8 or 9. I give it a 7 because even though the plot made me roll my eyes at times, I couldn’t stop watching it. I knew what was going to happen and I still wanted to watch lol. So I guess that’s why I didn’t rate this any lower. It’s a decent watch if you like romance and drama, but there ARE better shows too.

I know some people may not like this romance anime because there are a few instances of miscommunication between the characters, but CMON can someone name a romance anime where this doesn't happen? Peach Girl is one of the best romances out there solely because the drama is the best, the storyline flows and makes sense for these characters, and the characters are actually likable - even the mean ones have a purpose.
Spoilers Ahead:
I'll start off by saying, I can't stand Sae, but I freaking love her because she serves her purpose! She's evil and she knows it! She's one of the best villians
...
I've seen in a romance anime. She's psychotic and does it well.
Momo is a decent woman lead. She's very strong, sweet and beautiful. She can be ditzy sometimes because I can't count how many times she believes Sae, but she also stands her ground, so I guess it evens it out. She isn't the worst girl lead, I actually like her majority of the time.
Okay, okay...now...Kairi. Kairi is the BEST BOY!!!! AHHH, I love him. He's probably the main reason I finished the entire show, just so I could see who Momo chooses (yes, this is a love triangle anime). Kairi is so sweet, he loves Momo through her worst times and yes he has his own issues but he actually WORKS on them, and is open and honest with Momo instead of breaking up with her without her knowing what is going on *cough cough* Toji *cough cough*.
Toji is a good character because I feel he serves his purpose of being the "first crush". Toji is sweet, but throughout the show he was about as dumb as a box of rocks, I swear the man has 10 brain cells. Maybe I am just a Kairi fangirl, but since Day 1, Kairi was the ONLY person who believed in Momo when all the drama was going on, he stuck with her, he let her love someone else and was fine with it, and he's hilarious! See? I started talking about Kairi again - Lol.
And, Ryo (Kairi's brother) he's evil, but he's so hilarious to me at times. I'm glad there was a character that humbled Sae. Sae finally met her match. Also, Misao is a strong, GROWN woman - I loved her!
The storyline is easy to follow, and pretty simple. If you love drama, amazing boys like Kairi, and love triangles, you'll like this anime. You'll have to watch to see who Momo picks. The show is full of drama, but it's so watchable. I give it a 9/10!

This anime is alright, if you are looking for a short anime to pass the time. The storyline is pretty easy to follow and I actually like the music in it. The only reason I give this a 6, is because if someone told me I had to drop this anime mid-way through I wouldn't miss it. It's also not the most memorable show. It has good themes in it though. Another big reason I didn't care too much about the romance aspect of this show is because the MC looks like a little boy. No, it's not because he's short. I've seen anime with
...
short guy characters who look grown. I don't know what the two main character ages are supposed to be, but it was weird for me to picture them together because the lead girl looks like she could be his mother. I guess, it would be the art style. The boys facial features look very young, he just looks like he's a little kid. If someone told me he was 10 or 11 I wouldn't be surprised. And, then the lead girl looks like she's 21, as far as facial features go, so that turned me off a bit. Other than that, it's an alright show.

I am still trying to figure out how this is such a top ranked anime with basically an average of 8.9/10. If this anime weren't 74 episodes, I would actually re-watch it to see if maybe my opinion would change - but honestly it's so boring I won't. I decided to give Monster a 5/10 because the first 25-30 episodes were actually decent and I was thoroughly watching - after that it went downhill.
The next 40 episodes drag so much, I literally kept watching to finish what I had started. I began having the show on while I worked or as background noise at certain
...
points. This show could have been amazing if it were condensed to 24-40 episodes and they focused on the actual STORY.
If I had a dollar for how many times the characters said 511 Kinderhim, Monster, The Devil, or "I need to end this" without anything actually happening, I would be rich.
Character Breakdown -
Tenma - The MC is so bland after the first 10 episodes I honestly wouldn't have cared if he died. That's how bland he was. He was a surgeon who saved a little boy, the little boy then becomes a serial killer years later and then some of the murders get blamed on Tenma, so he becomes a fugitive and begins researching this boy Johan. I think for about 40 episodes he is just running around aimlessly with a gun, chasing Johan, not actually doing anything but saying "I need to end this" and bumping into random side characters with story lines I did not care about AT ALL.
Johan - his story line is what kept me interested, but his character is literally a ghost and not in a good way. You hear about him being this "monster", being so sick and evil (people are deathly scared of him) - but never actually see him do anything? He is rarely in episodes. It's always others doing it for him. And yeah, I guess he is a master manipulator - there were a few scenes that he creeped me out in, like when he convinced that one detective (can't remember his name, there's like 1,000 unmemorable characters) to kill himself. But other than that, the story became so dragged that I started to forget Johan was the bad guy - they introduce so many other irrelevant thugs and gang members that when they repeatedly murmur Monster I had to remind myself that this story was about Johan being the villain. He just wasn't THAT scary or creepy to me.
Ava - she is so irrelevant, her character should have been written off after episode 20. ALL she does is drink and whine about getting revenge on her ex Tenma.
Nina - she honestly could have had more impact to the story but all she does is pass out, have visions and walk around with the little boy who Tenma saved.
The main detective Lunge - he starts off so annoying - he has this weird obsession that Tenma is the main murderer and even when placed with facts against his way of thinking he doesn't stop thinking the killer is Tenma. He actually has good character development in terms that he starts researching Johan and slightly becomes less closed minded.
There are several other random irrelevant characters that I literally cannot even remember most of their names. There's this red head boy that Tenma saves, but he really isn't that important. The story drags and drags and drags, I honestly can't believe I didn't drop it. Like I said in the beginning this could have been amazing if it were 24-40 episodes.
If you want to see a doctor chase around someone who is barely seen for 74 episodes, random plot devices and characters, the name Monster repeated 24/7, people who get the chance to do something but never take it, and random dialogue to make this seem scary and interesting - this is your show. I still give it a 50%. If you do watch, watch to episode 30 and then skip to episode 71 and watch the last 3 episodes, haha.
