I'm a math tutor in the Greater Houston area of Texas. In the 90s, I owned a comic book store near Dallas called Laughing Dragon Comics. We rented anime on VHS tapes and had special after-hours screenings of fansubs that were not yet commercially available in the states.
I sold the store in 2001 and stopped watching anime because life was just too busy. In 2013, my daughter's friend invited her to an anime con in San Antonio. They bought tickets and the friend's family had a hotel room paid for and everything but then they had to back out at the last second. But, since everything was paid for, they just gave us the passes and the hotel room and we went in their place. Being at the convention was all it took to get me back into anime all over again. Now I'm playing catch-up with all the series I've missed in the past 10 years or so!
I love being able to just get online and watch pretty much anything whenever I want. Back in the 90s, you had to buy fansubs on VHS tapes whenever you could find them. There was no streaming video back then! I used to watch really REALLY bad quality copies of stuff just so I could at least keep up with the stories. Sometimes I had to watch episodes raw since no one had subbed them yet. I usually had to watch episodes out of order because I'd come across maybe episodes 5-12 of a series and watch them. But I wouldn't find episodes 1-4 until a couple months later!
It's so much easier today! But at the same time, it kind of takes the "quest" factor out of then equation. It was fun hunting down, collecting and sharing episodes back then. It was awesome when your group of anime friends would all be looking for a certain episode or series for a long time and then you'd come in one day and be like "Hey, look what I picked up at Anime Fest!" You'd be a hero and everyone would pass the tape around making copies to add to their own collections! FUN!!!
My First Anime: Voltron (Hyakujuu-Ou GoLion) I used to watch this after school every afternoon. It always bugged me how they started each episode fighting the bad guys in lion form before eventually combining to make Voltron. I was like, why don't they just start out as Voltron and kick the dude's ass???
Early anime I watched that almost made me not like anime:
