I always like finding One Piece fans.

I'm still a bit torn about it. To me the final movie is nonsense stacked on nonsense stacked on nonsense to the infinity. Until the one character who doesn't really care about all of the supposed epicness of anime (Mari aka the real life girlfriend) says "are you done with your shenanigans, Anno? Let's go back to face real life that actually matters." I love that, the final seconds of the movie are beyond epic. But everything up to that point was just nonsensical action and eva on steroids (on purpose), just so that the reveal can happen. Does that twist make it a good movie as a whole though? I don't know.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I've rewatched the rebuild movies and the final one. I recognized the things from the video in the movie, yet still couldn't get any connection to anything happening on the screen. That also happened with the final film them. However, literally in the final seconds of the movie I realized what the whole thing was all about and it made me realize that Hideaki Anno might be the biggest troll in anime history, wasting my time being angry about the rebuild films for years when it really didn't matter at all! Even though I still feel like Darling in the Franxx brought a very similar message across in a more intricate and engaging way and with more nuance, with the last movie Anno proved that he is not at all disrespectful towards the original out of sheer monetary interest but rather has something to say :)

Not yet, I wanted to watch them with a good friend of mine who is also a big fan of the original eva series and despised the rebuild movies back when they came out. So I'm going to have to wait until the Covid thing has gotten better before I can dare do that :)

Thanks again for making me aware of that interpretation. I was ready to never go back to these movies again, but now I'm thinking about rewatching them with the meta-angle in mind :)

Thanks! I've never seen this video before, it is an interesting take on the Rebuild movies. That would explain why I could not relate to them, because I always felt like I understood the point of the original. Growing up with Shinji and coming to the same realizations the character in the show does, it was a life-changing experience that made me who I am today. If it is true that the Rebuild movies are just a reaction to the fans ignoring the actual message of the original, I feel like they are still failures, though. Anno cannot expect people who rejected the introspective craziness of the original to suddenly embrace another even more cryptic lesson on embracing life. How could he? They rejected it when he created intricate characters that people were willing to relate to back in the day. They will reject it even more strongly because (arguably) the Rebuild is much more convoluted and much less accessible than the original (with all the meta-level thinking that is apparently necessary). It seems that he is trying much harder than before to convey the message while at the same time being much more detached from what the crowd he is trying to talk to is willing to grasp. In comparison, other shows are doing a much better job at that by (like Eva back in the day) trying to appeal to the crowds with good characters and concept while connecting those with important subtext. I've recently started watching Darling in the Franxx (and haven't finished it yet, full disclosure), which for me so far is a much better Eva Rebuild than any of the movies we got. It is telling a story about embracing love and sexuality, but instead of going overly cryptical and meta with it, the subtext is all there in a story that is accessible because of its entertainment factor. Escapism is not necessarily the death of reality, instead it can be used to open up reality and real issues for a lot more people.

Don't mind others the manga is underrated.

The hate of this season is mainly because how shit the manga ended. (Trust me, although I'm not following the manga since the very beginning, I've followed it for a good 2 years. It is painful to see how the quality goes down). Given that it's JC staff there likely won't be an anime original ending, and thus people start to panic and hating. Honestly it is understandable though because once you read how the manga progressed you will understand

Oh you just wait because it will be hella garbage in next arc.
