Oh wow, yeah it has been a long time, thanks. I'm doing pretty good I graduated awhile ago, are you still in school? Anyway I'm pretty hyped about Shape of Water at TIFF this year, they're gonna do a Del Toro Exhibit at the AGO too. What have you been up to though? Hows life and stuff?
LoneWolf Aug 14, 2015 9:22 PM
I got about another year too. I haven't been taking 5 courses every semester so I have a few more credits to finish.

Yeah I might start collecting when I get into a more stable financial situation and I pay off my student debt and stuff. I'm only working part-time too... just slowly trying to save up.

Spice and Wolf really sold me on it's setting. It had a very immersive atmosphere. Every time I was watching the show it really felt like I was right there. Great OST and realistic characters, instead of the typical anime archetypes. Also instead of focusing on the usual knight and dragon stuff when using a European medieval setting, it focused on merchant trading instead, which was really interesting and unique. I heard the Light Novels are really good... Yeah like I said it's unlikely to get a new season at this point. Have they finished the story in the LNs btw?

I kind of got into the whole seasonal watching thing. Most of my friends that I talk to about anime watch the seasonal airing stuff as well so it's sort of habit at this point. I don't think there's anything particular good or bad about it, but it does give you something to talk about with people every week lol.

Kuchuu Buranko and Mononoke are both amazing. They're by the same director, Kenji Nakamura. He also worked as an episode director in Kemonozume. Unfortunately his latter works don't really hold up as well IMO. He kind of discards his horror/psychological angle and goes for a more mainstream approach with his newer shows. I was talking about use of colors in anime and I brought up the example of how you could still have a tense atmosphere while using a bright and colorful palette like in Mononoke. It's really quite amazing how he managed to pull at off. Mushishi just recently ended as a franchise with the movie Suzu no Sizuku. It's kind of sad to know there will never be any more... such a great series. Really rare to have something that is so holistic in it's portrayal of nature and humans.

I wouldn't say the 2nd season of Gantz is bad, but it's obviously a filler after a certain point. I think I mentioned the English dub before. It's kind of hilarious in a bad way. The manga is definitely worth it though. It does start to go downhill after a point. I read it some time ago so I can't say exactly when, but yeah Vol 8 sounds about right.

I was pretty hyped for Ranpo Kitan, since it was related to Edogawa Ranpo. I read a manga adaptation of one of his stories (Panorama Island) by Maruo Suehiro. It was pretty good IMO. The art really elevated it though. The stories in Ranpo Kitan are only tangentially relate to Mr. Ranpo's works. Honestly it would have been better if his name wasn't associated with this farce of a horror anime. Is it really so difficult to create an anime that doesn't have some sort of romcom or slice of life element? Why is it so hard to have a consistent tone and atmosphere? Honestly I shouldn't even bother getting worked up about this stuff. It's better to keep expectations low, especially when it comes to horror.

I don't want to completely discredit western horror. There are some good directors. John Carpenter's older works like Halloween and The Thing. Recently James Wan's stuff, Insidious and The Conjuring have been decent. I watched this Australian horror/thriller movie called the Babadook, which was surprisingly really good IMO. There is definitely kind of an extra layer of mystery when watching Asian horror films and you can't understand the language. I guess it's hard to describe lol.

Anyway I got the chance to watch a few of the things you suggested. Shutter was amazing... like I was legitimately kinda freaked out by the end. I think that's my first Thai horror I've seen, so good to see they have a market for it there too. I watched Ichi the Killer. I've already read the manga, so I sorta knew what to expect. It was great to see it in action though and there was some differences. Takashi Miike is a great director. I want to see more of his stuff. His part in 3 Extremes and his episode in Masters of horror were really good too. I saw "I saw the Devil" too. It was definitely leaning more towards a mystery with the serial killer stuff, but very solid movie.

More recommendations would be great. I'm still kinda getting into it. I'm not very easily offended or disturbed. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but I'm kinda desensitized to this sort of stuff. I've never seen any Italian horror before, sounds really interesting though. I remember some Spanish horror movies. REC, the first one... I heard the sequels were bad and haven't seen them and The Devil's Backbone by Guillermo Del Toro. Great director. I'm currently watching his series The Strain. It's not amazing, but it's fairly entertaining as far as T.V series go.

Yeah Audition is one of my personal favorites as well. There is just something about it that's so unsettling. Probably cause it feels realistic and not so supernatural. There was some really trippy stuff in the movie though, but I think it worked well. Like I said before Miike is a great director. I really want to see what else he's done.

Don't worry about long messages with me lol. I write a lot of them and get a lot of them too so I'm used to it. As for Fan Expo, I've never gone before, but it looks interesting so I wouldn't mind going. I think one of my friends is going too and has gone before too so I'll probably ask him for more information. Are there any days with particularly interesting stuff going on?
LoneWolf Aug 10, 2015 8:54 PM
Yeah took awhile for me to reply as well, sorry. Had to study for my summer class final, just finished my exam earlier today. Looking forward to the rest of the summer... not looking forward to the full-time school year.

My friends got really bored during that Japan travel panel so we left early. It was also hot as hell in that small room. We took a bunch of those fans they were giving out lol. I really wanted to go to the Eva and Jojo panels, but I had some other plans on Saturday. I never collected much in terms of merchandise, but Jojo figurines sound awesome. When I think figurines I just automatically think of those kinda perverted female ones with the suggestive poses... I have some bluray movies and manga, I just never really got into collecting much I guess.

Spice and wolf was great, Holo and Lawrence had great chemistry. The banter between the two was just so entertaining to watch. They really bounced off each other well. I felt like I was getting the same kind of vibe near the start of the series when it was only Adlet and the Princess, but as they introduced more characters that kinda went away. I do like the show to an extent though. It has a unique setting (Aztec/Mayan) and some good direction. Those monsters look so out of place though... really ugly cgi. The recent stuff with the 7th/8th Brave is kinda interesting though. I just want a Spice and Wolf season 3 though :(. I heard they kinda messed up the continuity, cause Brains+Base skipped an important arc where they were supposed to be on a ship, so a season 3 seems unlikely. Maybe they can do an OVA for that and continue, but yeah... I'm not getting my hopes up.

Gangsta is good, some of the stuff with the Twlights takes away from the realism, but overall it still has a very dark and realistic tone, but makes it stand out from everything else in the season, that's going for the typical SoL comedy stuff. Prison School is like completely in the other direction... the humor is really immature, but the delivery is genius. They're so serious about everything, even though when you think about it's really ridiculous. The character designs are super realistic too, which just adds another level to the hilarity. Yeah not a bad season.

Just curious are you into Korean or Japanese horror movies? I've been watching a few lately. Definitely a lot better than most western horror movies and I'm not even gonna talk about the majority of horror anime... Ranpo Kitan this season... just no. I've seen the Ju-on series, Marebito, Noroi, Audition, Dark Water, Three Extremes, Tale of two sister, Red shoes and a few other things. I'll try to get more into it, especially since I have some more free time now.

Hey Everybody, very serious message from le Creator of RACE
Please read carefully

LoneWolf Jul 14, 2015 5:17 PM
I noticed I made a lot of typos and stuff too, I really need to proofread my messages. I tend to type really fast and messy though.

Nice to know you enjoyed it. This was only my 2nd year going, I was glad I was able to host a panel. It was a lot easier than I thought. I guess you have to kind of sell yourself though. Some of my friends didn't get the panels they wanted to do though, so it's good to have some options. What panels did you end up going to btw? I only went to like 3 other panels aside from my own. One was this comedy show thing called 404's, another was the governor general of Japan explaining some stuff about the country and the last one was for bad fan fiction lol. I spent most of the convention just hanging out with my friends.

I actually think the manga for Parasyte is much better. They changed some of the personalities of the characters and the dubstep music and stylistic changes didn't really work for me.

For the new Vampire Hunter D series there seems to be a lot of production issues since it will be a collaboration with North America. The rough plan for now seems to be 1 hour episodes that are full cgi in an episodic format. It seems like they are targeting the NA audience more since frankly people in Japan don't really care for this sort of thing. It's kind of sad, but it's mostly the highschool slice of life stuff with cute girls that really makes the money in Japan. Hopefully they figure things out though and it doesn't end up being full cgi, I'm not really a huge fan of that.

Oshii is the director of all the Patlabor franchise. It's originally based on a manga though. The 2 movies are much better than the actual series. Especially the 2nd one. He is also currently directing a Patlabor Live-action series. I think that might actually already be finished.

So far I'm watching Ushio to Tora, Prison School Gangsta. DRRR!x2 Ten, Rokka no Yuusha, and a few other things. I might consider dropping some stuff since I'm kinda busy this summer. The few above are the ones I'm enjoying the most so far though. Also I've got another year for my bachelors.
LoneWolf Jul 7, 2015 7:12 PM
Yeah I'm doing well, I'm working and have summer school so I've been keeping myself busy. I went to Anime North this year and did a panel (for Parasyte) it was really cool, a good experience hopefully I can do more next year.

Yeah I completely agree about Kemonozume, I see so many people write this show off cause it's so unconventional and doesn't look like your typical anime. Even among all of Yuasa's shows a lot of people consider Kemonozume his weakest work which I completely disagree with. Although Tatami Galaxy and Kaiba may be objectively better Kemonozume will always be my personal favorite. I remember that one episode with the old couple in the desert and the imagery of the lakes that reflected the sky and stuff. Yeah a really underrated show, more people need to watch it. Yuasa started his own studio called Science Saru so hopefully that gives him more creative freedom with his future works.

Yeah it's a damn shame that Kon passed away so early. I felt like he just had so much more that he could have given to the anime industry. His movies are really not like anything else out there. Theypander to the typical otaku crowd and are even so influential hollywood directors are influenced by them (Inception, Black Swan and Requiem for a dream). Perfect Blue has also always been my favorite. I love the thriller/mystery element to it and the build up of tension and atmosphere. The ambiguity of the ending and some of the events that take place are a plus too. Sometimes you can't really tell what is reality and what is delusion.

He was working on a movie called Dreaming Machine before he died hopefully that gets finished someday... it's been 5 years though so it seems unlikely. Madhouse have the rights and they have kind of been in a decline lately (Ore Monogatari is alright though). 2 of the Madhouse founders are dead and 1 founder left to create MAPPA. There was a recent announcement of a Vampire Hunter D series though... so yeah I guess miracles do happen.

Yeah I ended up writing a lot sry, I tend to ramble sometimes. Right now I'm mostly just following seasonals and already picked up a few from the Summer season. I'm also watched Mobile Police Patlabor though. It's like a cop mecha slice of life show, kinda fun, but sometimes a bit dull.

Yeah I'm watching a lot of other stuff too, recently finished Bojack Horseman, much better than I expected. Kinda like Louie+Archer. Yeah watched the first ep of Terra Formars. I'm caught up with the manga so I already know whats happening. The heavy censors are a huge turn off so a lot of people are waiting for the BD releases. Personally it doesn't bother me that much, but I can understand the reasoning.

Don't think I'll bother with Log Horizon for now, I got mid-terms coming up and I'm already watching too many things including some completed anime. I pretty much just follow publishing manga atm, but I might pick something up eventually. Saw the first 2 eps of Gundam: Greco, already seems a lot more competent than most recent gundam releases. Rest of the Fall 2014 stuff should be out between this week and the next. let me know what you think.
LoneWolf Sep 22, 2014 7:06 PM
Hmm I could never really get into log horizon, people keep telling me it's not that bad, but all I can think about is bad memories of watching SAO when I see it lol. Didn't even bother picking up SAO 2 last season. Psycho Pass was alright and I really like cyberpunk in general. I don't think it will ever reach the heights of Ghost in the Shell though. Season 2 is being done by a different studio and director, so I'm curious how they're going to handle it.

My top picks for Fall 2014would be Parasyte, Terra Formars, Nanatsu no Taizai, Fate unlimited blade works, and Mushsih 2. Bahamut, World Trigger and Gundam G no Reconguista look like they have a lot of potential. As for SoL/romcom etc. My friend seems to be pretty optimistic about Shigatsu wa kimi ga Uso. Theres also Brilliant Park, but I'm really really skeptical. I'm not a fan of KyoAni and it's got a harem tag... PV didn't look to great either.

LoneWolf Sep 17, 2014 5:24 PM
The Gantz anime ends incomplete with a filler arc. It does have a pretty funny english dub though. So yeah go for the manga. The quality starts declining around the mid-point, but it's still regarded as one of the best sci-fi manga.

Sorry for bailing early without saying bye or anything btw, my entire group was leaving. One guy was getting kind of noxious cause of the loud music and all the people. What did they end up doing after we left? Also what are you looking forward to for fall season?
LoneWolf Sep 15, 2014 9:45 PM
Here are some horror reccs for anime. You have a lot of these on your plan to watch already btw. Hope you enjoy them :)

Also some kinda borderline ones
(don't watch the older version it sucks)!
This last one is really disturbing. To give you an idea, no production studios wanted to touch it so one guy spent 5 years drawing all of them animation cells himself and when it was finished it got banned in Japan. So yeah... proceed with caution.

Also if you ever want to get into horror manga theres a much better selection IMO. The horror market for manga is actually a lot better. This guide has been really helpful to me and it gets updated fairly frequently too.
