Early on I had a very stupid way of rating animes, I had no system and didn't really think much about my ratings. After some time I decided I'd organize it a little more so I deleted all of my ratings. I'll probably rerate everything at some point but it'll actually take more time than one would think as it's been a long time since I watched those series and I don't remember them very well.

Well, I think that my dislike for YuYuYu IS related to Madoka, but I don't think it's for the reasons you'd expect. I actually went into it really excited: I'd heard people comparing it to Madoka and saying they liked a lot of the things it did better, and as a huge Madoka fan I was totally on board for a show that was even more engaging than my all-time favorite. Therefore, when it fell flat for me, the disappointment was much harder. I do see it as a bit of a Madoka rip-off, but I don't particularly care about that since Madoka itself rips of tons of stuff (Utena, Higurashi, Nietzsche.) I do think this might have heightened my frustration though just because I felt like it wasn't doing its inspiration justice.

As for why I dislike the show itself it's not so much the actual story that bothers me, it's all in the execution. It's pretty thematically vacant, its ending dismisses all its conflicts, the characters are written rather flatly prioritizing immediate emotional payoff over actual character depth, and it rushes its story through a series of twists and turns for which very little groundwork is laid, mimicking Madoka's scale-enhancement but without any of the attention to detail that made that seem natural. Part of this is due to flat direction and lazy storyboarding, part of it is due to it just not being a story with very much ambition outside of the immediate appeasing of its audience on a weekly basis.

Obviously though this is all just my opinion. If you like the show then you like it, and that's pretty great! Tons of people hate Madoka, and I either flat-out disagree with their condemnations (like saying the characters are too simplified) or think their critiques are actually some of the show's strengths. At the end of the day we'll be passionate about whatever floats our boats.

Also, sweet to see Chikan Otoko on your favorites list. That's probably one of the best rom-coms out there, and it doesn't get nearly enough attention.
