Date a Live is certainly one of those series that makes you think a little carefully about what you’re doing with your life. After coming off of watching the masterpiece that is Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san, I came to the realization that an anime that amazing certainly isn’t going to come around for another 10-15 years. Disappointed, I began to look at new upcoming anime in the hopes that something would satiate my hunger for comedic genius. This is what I found. After watching the first episode, I began trembling – my joints (specifically in my hands) were in pain, I heard my bones cracking, and felt like my skull was being pushed in. It was this that signaled to me that I was going through some sort of withdrawal.
I quickly took my pristine Blu-Ray™ case of Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san’s first episode, and put it in my Blu-Ray™ player and pressed play. In seconds, the pain in my body began to dissipate, and, more importantly: I felt entertained.
Bones. How could something so simple be so funny? As the pain faded away, a thought entered my head. Babies are born with about 300 bones, and almost a third of them fuse together to form the 206 that we have as adults. It was then that I came to an epiphany. The decrease in bones in our body must be the main cause of our need for Honda-san. Perhaps it’s because he has skipped the fusion process that most humans undergo? It seemed strange to me, because the Coronal Suture is fairly visible on his head – and it’s a clear indication of bone fusion. And then came another another epiphany. The Coronal Suture is not the only indication of fusion, and Honda-san must have skipped the fusion elsewhere in his body.
Although Honda-san doesn’t have all 300 of his original bones, he’s pretty damn well close – and I suppose we regular humans must be drawn to him because of it.
This self-diagnosis from me is just a word of warning to all of you. Once you watch Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san, you will NEVER be able to watch another comedy. You might think that I’m afraid of the strain that it puts on my body but let me tell you that this is the best I’ve felt in years.
