I wanted to like this series so much, truly a pity.
The premise, the general plot, the gore art style, the ghost power system and all in all the horror aspect of the anime were great! The little girl MC, Yayoi, was quite nice, too, with a tragic background, a strong motivation and a balanced power base (like she's not op, she's just smart enough to use op spirits and some items). Still on the fence about the detective mystery plot, but it seems fun. That's it for the good part.
I know cutesy design can add contrast to horror, it was done pretty well in Mieruko-chan
...
to separate normal and ghost worlds and make viewers sympathise with the MC. But here it does nothing. There are lots of gory scenes with these cute characters, at the same time some monsters are given the same design (like the teacher in the end).
And don't even get me started with the MCs... Sympathise? I mean, the guy is kinda understandable, he's mostly kind, socially awkward and being manipulated lol, he's constitution attracts spirits even though he doesn't want to have anything to do with them. What broke his character for me was his just overcaming two or three of his longtime traumas in a snap with the power of love and frienship or something. Like, really?.. Just how unserious can you get about character development?
But this Eiko girl, his "love interest" is a separate story. She's like yandere but not full way??? A stalker? OK, fine, love obsession is a thing, happens. But she doesn't have to say some weird unrelated shit that adds absolutely nothing to the story (Kei-kun, you actually like fear, or whatever) because of that. And wouldn't it be much more interesting if she only had her scientific urge to explore the unknown and enduring the scary part of it instead of being " I like scary stuff, omg I'm such a crazy gurl no wayyyyy"? Emmm, like any other woman watching true crime nowadays, I dunno? XD They literally gave her a twisted personality for nothing, it's an incomprehensible mess and just plain annoying.
You could say "But it's not even related to horror, why care?" - Exactly!!! Just throw all this useless shit out and let the horror aspect shine, why did you have to ruin it ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
To crown it all, most episodes start with a recap of the previous one and a special story explanation before an op. When did we end up back in 2013? I wish they just made it 3 episodes shorter instead of wasting my time like this, it's just feels disrespectful.
In the end, I gave up and watched it on 1,5Ñ…. Doable, not very enjoyable.
Kinda hope for the second season, but only with the homework done.

It kind of saddens me that so many people write this series off as stupid and shallow, like it tries to be funny for the sake of comedy, but doesn't succeed. While actually it says so many cool things in its own unserious erratic way.
Everyone is saying that it's inconsistent, it's trying hard to be every genre etc, but isn't that the point? Yes, it's made as a unique rollercoaster for the viewer, but It's also a nonverbal way to show the crazy hectic life these kids have to lead while trying to sort out their own feelings as well. Both of MCs little by
...
little unravel their mutual sympathy into something new. (I mean, FMC actually started liking him very soon, while MMC didn't even look at her this way at first, well, isn't it usually just the same irl, lol) And through a lot of cute little details are shown their own personal growth and the change in their relationship.
I don't remember myself actually laughing at any of the jokes, but neither did I cringe or feel like they are out place. Yet I definitely smiled like crazy when all these different characters grew closer turning into one big noisy family, even if they are rivals in love or seemingly find each other annoying. They are afraid to be laughed at or hated, but in the end take courage to trust and help each other and even ask for help (!!!) Just remember the last time when you didn't dare to, and, who knows, mb next time you can find this courage as well.
I love how this series talks about actual serious problems, mostly female abuse, through the ghost stories. It's a pity that the accent was a bit too light and the scenes didn't take too long before turning into action comedy again... But damn they hit hard. I cried my eyes out on the red dress lady's story, like wtf. The turbohag isn't there for nothing either, she tries to take revenge for all the assaulted girls. The same theme is brought up in the last episode, but we don't know how the FMC will deal with it fn.
The way all of the characters in the "family" want to help their enemies is amazing, too. Even after suffering fighting them MCs actually take the lead to understand their circumstances and reasons, forgive, sympathies and offer help. The cow abduction scene was obviously an iconic meme, but also just a very heartwarming moment. You know, I kinda wish more people were able to do the same, mb the world could become a little better then 🙃
I'm not saying it's a masterpiece for everyone to admire, but it definitely has much more to offer than people tend to see. I hope you give it some more thought after reading~
(The animation, direction and VAing are gorgeous as well, let's not forget about it)
PC: sorry, if my language is somewhat all over the place, haven't had a chance to speak English for a while XD

It's boring to the point of irritating. Wasted potential.
As everyone else has already mentioned there isn't much plot, so it's character driven. But the characters are so f-ing unbelievable and stupid, just stereotypical dummies. I'm not going to touch on pedophilia issue, cause who cares, it's fiction. Sexualization of the vampire girl would be fine, if it reflected what she looks like for MC (sadly, it doesn't. upd: until the last episode lmao).
The vampire girl is more or less fine, imho. She is not a good person, not smo to relate to, but her immaturity is explainable: imagine, a not so clever teenage girl
...
turned into a vampire, she's overcome by hunger and does nothing but eat (drink blood), drink beer and play around, just leading an easy life, therefore no need for personality growth - no one would expect her to be mature, really. Though if she was bored by such a life, it would much more believable and more interesting, too.
Upd: she was bored, but then she's stupid for not finding smt fun, sorry
The classmate/friend girl is also alright. Just a sad good girl with no real goal in life, I bet there are thousands of them in Japan. But she doesn't act any different in the unexpected circumstances she faces, that's the unbelievable part.
And the biggest problem is MC. He says that he doesn't understand human relations and emotions like love, that is by the age of 14, it's logical to assume that he is somewhat autistic or traumatized and neurotic, but he doesn't act like either. In fact, he is _very_ normal, just somehow not interest in anything at all (upd: he collects sneakers, so he has a little hobby and all the previous crap just makes even less sense) And he kinda has some friends in school, at least he acts like they are worth talking to and laughing with (upd: and what about the blond guy? Even MC himself said they are friends), but then he just decides to stop going to school, not even cause he's tired, but cause he can't be bothered... Also, sometimes he acts shy about echi stuff, and other times he doesn't care at all. Be consistent, would you?
Moreover, none of them really show any personality growth through their interaction (aside from kinda suddenly falling in love in ep.13). You can't relate at all, no emotional attachment. Neither are there any funny jokes, though they try sooooo hard. They spell out so many obvious things. It's full of plot holes and makes no damn sense in general, especially, how calm everyone is about vampires and seeing one with their own eyes. Really? Imagine (actually imagine, mb your tomorrow) you went for a massage and a girl just passed through the wall. No reaction??? Another thing is... why the heck do they talk aloud all the time, it looks very artificial, even though it would be just fine, (no, like, 100 times better, actually) if they made them think all these things instead. Upd: THEY SUDDENLY STARTED THINKING INSTEAD OF TALKING ALOUD IN EP.7, I'm actually losing it
The last disappointment, for the insomniac like myself, is the way they simply neglect the problem of insomnia. "Just be satisfied with your day" - like hell this would work. Just imagine how fun it could be, if the show actually tried to tackle the problem, explain the possible reasons, find more and more ways to overcome it, present them to people who can't find help irl, I would actually look over all the other problems then. But the only advice given is "step out at night, it's so fun, forget your reality and become a vampire". Nicely done, helps a lot. They try to talk about other problems, but it looks very clumsy and immature, and gives people wrong ideas about, for example, obsessive behavior (ep.9).
All in all, if the series fails to get you involved by the 5th episode, isn't it obviously bad?
Upd: something interesting happens in ep.11, be sure to stick around)))
But I'll give them a thumbs up for making MC emptier than in an isekai or hentai. Amazing!
There are only 3 good things about this show: 1. Art
2. Music (creepy nuts just hit different, they slap)
3. Voice acting
= 3/10 (a waste of time, not even bad enough to be good)

It's not awful, just ok...
The animation is nice, the music is nice, the opening slaps. There are some funny jokes in the beginning, but their timing becomes worse and worse every episode, the narrative, the characters become more boring. The battle scenes are ruined by monotonous oh so panicked explanations of details. The last four-five episodes are awfully dragged out and full of flashbacks to previous episodes. The MC could be very interesting, but he gets his op powers just because, with no real growth, while still whining and being dumb. His personality is inconsistent, one moment he cool like a cucumber, the other he
...
panic and cry like an idiot without any actual reason, he wants to be better, but he doesn't, just goes with the flow even though he seemed to be realistic, scrutinizing at first and even awakened some interesting power inside his body (the shooting moment), but it just didn't play any role later on. But he just became annoying and boring.
The only interesting thing left is the mystery of this little brother and the chairman.
Started with a bang and ended with a fizzle. Real pity
