WELCOME TO MY PROFILE!
I mainly enjoy series from the 70's to the early 00's but I'll watch just about anything really, try not to take my ratings too seriously as I don't update them that often and my rating system is more accurate on Anilist, I'm also more active there as well.
Enjoy the stay

In my experience, the filler did bother me which is why I made the video. The series can get profound in the way it handles heroism and sorrowful drama but it's hard to believe that when the first arc is about a martial arts action hero saving his fiancée from hordes of bad guys for 22 episodes. Sort of has that "Will Kenshiro rescue Yuria? Find out next week." type of vibe. The series in general can get outrageous but it's never THAT corny or over the top. The way it performs feats of inhuman strength are more akin to mythical legends. There will be the occasional minor villain that's there to be humorously killed. Basically, it's on par with Ashita No Joe in terms of tragic men & having an emotional ost. While it influenced JoJo & Sakigake!! Otokojuku, FOTNS isn't played that absurd, most of the time. When the series gets great for me is around the late 40s/early 50's in terms of episode count. From that point onward it became a must watch for me. I just wish the filler wasn't so prominent in the beginning and the ending of the series.
The real problem with utena though is the fanbase. What I mean by this is that the fanbase will go to any length to defend the show by saying that if you criticise it you either didn't think hard enough or were not paying attention. For example, the world feels artificial because 'that's how they meant it to feel that way', or the characters feel bland and uninteresting because 'the writer wanted them to be robotic because blah blah blah'. It's a very toxic thinking process, and really all that happens is you see perfection in an otherwise incredibly boring product. The only areas I liked where the animation quality, which was at times very impressive, some standalone episodes, especially a bit closer to the end and occasionally the ost, which was good but like the rest of the series, repetitive and far too bombastic.
In summary, utena was probably the most difficult time I have had watching a series. I FORCED myself to sit through it when I probably wanted to drop it in episode 5 or so, just because I wanted to see what people were raving about. Unfortunately all that I got out of it was a bald spot on my head from yanking out hair one by one.
