The show has a solid start and a very promising premise. Very flawed characters that engage in dysfunctional relationships to satisfy their selfish and shallow desires, I can totally relate to that so got hooked right away. The use of sex to emphasize how superficial these characters are was a nice detail, it show in a very crude way how these type of relationships where people use each other can feel so empty and hurtful and totally not worth the fleeting happiness (or should I say pleasure) it brings.
Then, at some point it lost its essence a became a soup opera with everyone sleeping with each other. And those last three episodes, damn, just destroyed whatever good aspect was left from the first episodes. The conclusion made no sense with the sudden and nonsensical change of attitude from Akane and the delusional persistence of Narumi.
It suffered a lot from character development, they never showed true progression or willing to change themselves. Both Mugi and Hanabi could've been fleshed out way more, specially with the type of relationship they got in. Noriko could've been omitted, she didn't contribute at all to the story, Akane was very interesting at first and truly the most messed up character from the show but the last episodes focused on her were really bad. And then there's Ecchan the best character of this show, her personality and her little arcs were beautiful and fitted in the show's tone.
Still unsure about the score, is in 5-7 territory for me. Not as bad as everyone says, but also not great one. And must admit this was a guilty pleasure, I enjoyed watching it, reminded me a bit of White Album 2.
Will leave you here my thoughts of Koe instead of Reddit...
I was very attracted by the premise and even more surprised of how it handled pretty well a very sensitive theme such as the hard life of people with some disability and the bullying they have to endure in their early days. The idea of seeing it from the bully's perspective who later become the bullied helps a lot to empathize with the protagonist and have a wider perception of the social implications this issue carries. The main heroine is adorable and very easy to get attached to. You can understand her depression, her will to overcome her disability, her impotence to change her situation. Honestly I'm impressed with the character development without falling in a melodramatic story. The redemption message is quite strong and very heartwarming, even inspirational at some extent.
However my main complain of the story is the romance aspect. The story did a good job building the relationship of the main characters and how they grew closer every time, there was even a failed attempt of confession somewhere and a second love interest to spice things up, but all this was discarded in the last chapters and left everything with an unfulfilling and inconclusive end.
Third time? Wow, you must have really really liked it then.
I'm not sure if it will be on theatres here, so I might need to wait for BDrips to watch it as intended. On the bright side Koe no Katachi will be available here on May!!!
