to test for phenols, you can use NaOH first to check if it dissolves forming sodium phenoxide and then use NaCO3 and nothing should happen and when testign for carboxylic acids, you can use NaCO3 and use lime H2O to detect for CO2 by its turbidity increasing. TO test for carbonyls, use 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazinen and a orange precipitate should form and then to distinguish between the aldehyde and ketone, use tollen's reagent: NaOH+AgNO3 gives a brown precipitate which then dissolved with dilute NH3 solution and an aldehyde will react, reducing Ag forming a visible silver substance. Acidified dichromate (k2Cr2O7) is used to diistinguish between alcohol types:primary, secondary or tertiary. Halokanes are tested by using nuecleophilic substitution: Ethanol solvent + H2O(nucleophile) to split the halogen and R-chain, and then AgNO3 it.
