Ah Lovely Complex, it is perhaps at the top of my favorites list when it comes to Rom-com anime, it is endearing in ways that you wouldn't expect, but above all: it's... really hilarious.
Story - 8
So at the heart of any masterpiece is a good story, this is no different for Lovely Complex, while I do think the mind-numbing drama in the later episodes can certainly put a casual viewer through their paces, it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Without giving too many details about the plot, it's love-sick comedy driven by two people who are very vertically-conscious of themselves, and while the mundane obligatory drama
...
does drop the score a bit, the high points that it hits are done in a way that capitalizes on it's strengths.
Art - 8
Since art is at the center of animation, it's very important that you're staring at something you enjoy looking at, and Lovely Complex doesn't disappoint on this front, I find it is notable that the female lead: Koizumi Risa often changes her hairstyle from day-to-day, I find this to be a welcome dynamic change from the otherwise unchanging static cling of most female leads/protagonists.
With bursts of vivid color, it is lovely to look at, without being too overbearing, the only problem I could potentially foresee with the casual viewers is the deformed state the characters devolve into while expressing comedy... but then again, that's part of it's charm.
Sound - 9
I don't make it a point to focus on sound when it comes to most anime, but I have no shame in admitting that I got as giddy as a school-girl every-time I heard the opening theme for the series, it's nothing that's balls to the walls amazing, but it's a nostalgic type of calm music that you don't see too much nowadays.
On the flip-side of this coin, the ED was pleasing enough to my ears that I didn't see fit to just leave when the episode was over, opting instead to listen to it all the way through, the various OST's and BGM's sprinkled throughout the series did well in setting the mood/tone, the voice-acting was also quite superb
Character - 10
I don't think you'd get an argument from anyone who watched this, if you were to say that the characters were the main deciding point on the debate of whether or not to watch Lovely Complex, the side-characters such as Nakao and Nobu are endearing and receive some actual focus/development, while adding to the comedy-driven antics of our male and female leads, and they do all of this without detracting attention from the stars of the show! I find the balance refreshing and a decent change of pace from the norm.
If I were to describe our leads with a phrase, it would be this: comedy gold-mine. I don't think I'm being too generous when I give this anime credit for being one of (if not the most) funniest things I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing, the comedy will leave you clutching at your sides for days on end, were that not enough we also get a surprising amount of character development sprinkled with some very tender heartwarming moments. You'll fall in love with at least one of the cast, I guarantee it.
Enjoyment - 10
If you're not pissing yourself with laughter, you're too busy crying (along with our female lead) or swooning, you experience such a wide range of emotions when it comes to Lovely Complex, I tend put a big stress on re-watch ability when it comes to anime dealing with comedy, and this anime gets the gold star in that regard, despite watching it at least twelve times, I still laugh at every joke, and still partake in all the sappiness that ensues.
Overall - 9
I would fully endorse this product for consumption for any anime fan that loves romance as a genre, especially people who enjoy their romances with comedy on the side, you'll find that Lovely Complex has an abundance of both, with a satisfying conclusion that will leave you wanting for nothing (except for a continuation, it's just that good!)
