Yeah it's probably the way I was hyped up for TTGL and in the end was something that wasn't to my liking whatsoever.

20th Century Boys is fantastic. It's from the same mangaka as Monster so the psychological and story telling factor is strong with this one as well, but 20th CB has a lot more action to it. I will quote a review about this manga since it summarized the plot without spoiling very good.

20th Century Boys is about a group of men (and one woman) who, when they had been children, had been best friends, sharing a "secret base" in an overgrown field: a sanctuary where they could read manga, listen to music, and hide from the most evil twins in history, Yanbo and Mabo. One day, their "creative genius," Kenji suggested they bury a time capsule, fill it with their treasured possessions, and agree to unearth it only when the earth was in grave danger, for they would then save it.

Years later, they find themselves leading ordinary, unglamorous lives, their dreams of greatness long-buried under the dust of adult pragmatism. But then strange deaths caused by a mysterious virus begin occurring, and murders and disappearances occur one after another. Then one of their number becomes one of the dead, and all the clues point Kenji to a mysterious man who calls himself "Tomodachi (Friend)," who uses as his sign a symbol known only to Kenji's circle of friends.

As the scale of damage and the number of deaths rapidly increase, Kenji realizes that all the terrors are occurring as he had once set down on paper, in a story he and his friends had written, and buried in the time capsule they had sworn over.

It is definitely my favorite manga. I suggest you to read it in volume length not in chapters because reading only 2-3 chapters would not take you into the series as if you read 7-8 chapters (one volume) and you'll see how great the story telling is structured, making you want more and more.

Hi. I didn't like Baccano first of all because of the irritating switches between time and people. I also didn't find those thieves funny at all and I don't even remember much of it because it was very forgettable to me.
Steins;Gate was very overrated. The suspense was cool and thats what I liked the most of the show, but this crazy professor is so annoying and dumb, the humor not funny if this was supposed to be humor and overall so many boring moments where I was on the verge on dropping it. Same with Durarara which I dropped.
TTGL was also very overrated, I expected a lot based by how it was praised, turned out to be a western cartoony anime which wasn't appealing at all. My expectations were simply too high. The characters were annoying but my memories are also fading with this. I didn't feel any depth in it, also not funny if there was any comedy.

I didn't dislike YYH in general. It's more like it had some stuff I really liked and some stuff I really disliked so it balanced out each other and ended up being a 5. Positive points definitely were the characters and the humor. They really pulled me through the show. What I disliked was mainly the fights. Almost every fight was long, drawn out with endless reused screening of face reactions and meaningless one liners. This peaked in the Tugoru vs Yusuke fight, I couldn't stand it.

Aside from that: I honestly think YYH and HxH are extremly different. At least in the things I love about HxH. YYH has some strategy in fights but the fights are mostly based on asspulls and not well explained like in HxH. YYH has also an over-abundance of fights (I mean it's 80 of the playtime or so) while HxH's focus is a lot more on story telling and conversations (well-written even). Then as said above, length of fights due to unnecessary bullcrap.
Next point would be the villains. I loved almost every villain in HxH but Bomber Guy and the horde of trash ants in the chimera ant arc. HxH does an excellent job at showing us the villains action from their point of view. You see how they are villains, how they act, how they interact, you learn them to know. In YYH all you get is backflashes, very few pov's from the present and an asspull explanation at the end of the arc to make the main villain "likeable". The majority of the other villains just appear a few episode before the fight and you have no real relation to them. That makes the fights a lot less tense and interesting to me.
The humor is also completely different. I like the humor in both shows but it's really not the same.
Conversations and plot development are also on an entire different level. YYH often descends in the usual battle shounen style where characters throw one liners at each other etc. I know it basically made up this whole "genre" but that doesn't make it better.
So that are my main points. Of course character development/writing, power definition etc. are much more refined in HxH but YYH isn't completely different in the way it tackles these.
