A funny and absurd fast-paced buddy crime action movie with amazing style, taking inspiration from a lot of sources: The introduction mixing music and cuts from 70s spy and cop series with a Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs power walk, a mix of Miami Vice and gangster movie characters, and a whole funky Exploitation tone, but with a catgirl because Japan.

If you got the references, you already have a good idea of what to expect. Catblue: Dynamite draws inspiration from the same sources as Gunsmith Cats, Cowboy Bebop and GTA Vice City. It’s just a good, fun buddy crime action flick.

In the future, after humanity exhausted its energy resources, humans developed means to be the source of energy supply in the newly found metropolis. The new government decreed that every citizen should be registered, and for their efforts and contribution to society, they would be rewarded with a new highly addictive drug. The result, not surprisingly, was a drug epidemic that led to violence, gangs, and mafias. What was not expected, however, were the awful mutations said drug generated on a portion of the population, now no longer able to generate energy but craving the reward for it more than ever. The already oppressive police ... state had to develop a new type of agent for that matter.

Aachi and Ssipak are two street hoodlums who, by a sequence of random events, get a hold of a way to cheat the system and acquire the drugs in huge amounts, making them a target for the government, the mafias, and the mutants.

With its unique art style, awesome direction, insane scenes, absurd non-stop action, sarcastic pitch black humor, and sick and twisted story, Aachi and Ssipak is a breath of fresh air in animation, and doesn’t hold back to appease easily offended audiences.

This is one of those rare, totally unique, stand-alone productions that you see just once a decade. With incredible visuals and animation, I’d describe Mutafukaz as They Live meets GTA San Andreas, directed by David Leitch.

Based on a French comic but taking place in a fictional Southern California city and incorporating visual elements from cholo and black hip-hop culture, this film was made for the English dub, which is just fantastic. There is a lot going on in the story, but it’s not so much about focusing on that. What really shines are the insanely well-made action scenes, the funny dialogues and characters (I personally ... love the Shakespearean gangster), and the amazing atmosphere and visuals. It’s a truly unique experience.

If you didn't get the references I made in the introduction: This is a very violent black comedy with some underlying social commentary.

Thirteen scientists are the new apostles and are creating a new race for the new world and the revival of God. Our hero is the son of one of the apostles and a failed experiment presumed destroyed, but he is now back for brutal bloody body horror vengeance. He ends up teaming up with some dumb kids descendants of the Jesus’ clan but he is just too badass to care about any of their shenanigans and just bathes in the blood of his enemies... he also, somehow, pulls a cool badass sword out of nowhere for no reason... what?

Dumb violent and trash to the core, ... for a 1990 OVA there is a disturbingly low amount of nudity and just in the last episode do we get some weird furry tits. But we can overlook this fault by just how gruesome and weird everything is. How this masterpiece of B gore awesomeness went for so long without a review or even a single forum comment just shows the moral decadence of the anime community as a whole.

10/10 would watch again.

Devadasy is what you get when you order Evangelion from Wish and receive a somewhat not that bad, but still bad, product.
From all Evaclones this is the only one I could finish watching. Certainly being only three episodes long helped a lot, though.

In a world Evangelion doesn't exist, Devadasy could be interesting, one of those obscure OVAs appreciated by some niche audience, even though it's too short and underdeveloped... but as Evangelion exists it's just hilarious how serious it takes itself while being a blatant rip off. Because from all rip offs, this is the one that ripped off the most!

I'm really curious about how ... was the pitch to produce it. There is really no unique or discerning features. Being an OVA it enjoys so much freedom TV series don't have but instead of using it to abuse of sex and violence and become one of these OVAs that goes cult just for how trashy they are, the whole thing is pretty tamed... honestly it would have worked better as shameless porn parody.

Notice that I'm actually recommending it. I did find it pretty funny to watch... the "so bad it's good"?... ermm, not really, it kinda hurts to say it's good in any sense... but if you are fan of Evangelion or that general vibe, it's a fair watch considering it will barely take one hour of your day - and you won't be expecting more than a bad rip off.

Before Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon led the anime fever among kids in the West, it was actually Akira that opened the doors and made people see that the cartoons coming from Japan were not what we were used to see. A flood of weird VHS tapes with crazy plots and full of blood and nudity came, and boy, you couldn’t expect less from them.

Battle Royal High School is a product of those glorious times and has everything you should expect. Of course the plot is a chaotic hot mess; karate, demons and a metal hero space time continuum police officer. Of course ... the fights are super violent and monsters transformations go full body horror The Thing-style. And of course there are going to be naked girls!

For a long time I dismissed it thinking it was going to be just some high school delinquent story with ecchi-let-me-see-your-panties humor. Boy, was I wrong? This is pure 80’s OVA greatness. It doesn’t make any sense but the animation is great and it has this dark and absurd underlying tone that let you know you are not watching a regular cartoon, no, you just picked the weirdest stuff out of the video store and it's time for you to call your friends to see this bizarreness.

If any of the previously mentioned things are your thing, you should watch Battle Royal High School. If you are more of an ecchi-let-me-see-your-panties fan, then move along.

Alexander Senki enjoys a kind of artistic freedom that no longer exists in the anime industry - where lolis and cliché tropes of tsun-yan-whatever-dere and pastiche art style and comedy attempts are actively shoved in every production. It brings forth the magnificent art of Peter Chung, using slender and sculptural bodies that mix the German expressionist style of Egon Schiele with the sensual style of fashion designers of the 60’s like Antonio Lopez and Gregory Weir-Quiton. The costumes, always giving emphasis to erogenous areas, combined with thick eyelashes, voluptuous lips and exposed, always hard, nipples, are a mark of his character design that you may ... know from his previous animation work Æon Flux. The use of extravagant make up and androgynous figurines also looks very inspired by 60’s and 70’s avant-garde dance and theater troupes like The Living Theater, John Vaccaro’s Play House of the Ridiculous and The Cockettes, that were direct inspiration for the Glam Rock visuals of David Bowie and others. As for colors, background and vehicle design, those you could easily see on the pages of Metal Hurlant, as Chung himself proclaims his influence by Moebius, Enki Bilal and French comics artists. Had Chung also directed the anime, I’m sure Alexander’s relation with characters like his mother Olympias, Hephastion, Cassandra and Darius III would have been way more interesting. He’d probably have used the character of Bagoas as well, and made Cassandra’s gender-bending (the real historical character is Cassander, a man) part of the story.

For the historical part it adds a lot of fantastical and mystical elements, not just god’s prophecies but secret cults and sects plotting in the background. Still, it’s very delightful seeing all those important real names of History like Aristotle, Diogenes, Ptolemy, Plato and Pythagoras and their relations. Alexander Senki doesn’t pretend to be a documentary; it’s a fantastical dramatization, but on its way it tells the real epic of Alexander and his conquest.

This is not an anime for the average anime fan, though, but for fans of art and history.

Afro Samurai series as a whole got amazing art style, incredible animation and superb direction... also motherf*cking Samuel L. Jackson!

But besides that, you got a pretty basic overly badass tragic anti-hero on a path for vengeance, and as every sequel of this genre the second installment is even worse when it comes to story. If you are into some insane action and and a lot of violence, then this is perfect for you.

Overall Afro Samurai is a really enjoyable visual experience - if you turn your brain off.

Fan Service defines it. Not nudity kind of fan service, though.

The art and animation is quite good so you may like the show, but the characters and the story is as plain as in the game... here is where the "fan service" comes in: If you are a fan of the game (like myself) you will find yourself quite enjoying it because unlike other game adaptations the characters are actually using their game moves, using their special and combos and even the basic attacks. The fights are pretty well animated and you can really see Darkstalker in them... but if you never played the games ... it might not impress you...

The use of the roster is mid. They do show all characters but few play some relevant part, it would have been more interesting having more of them participating in the ending. Still, it's way better than modern game adaptations that instead of using characters from the game just introduce tons of new ones created by the director of the show and ignore the already existing ones that the fans would like to see...

Also it seems it was supposed to have a sequel that wasn't made. Darkstalker is three games: the first and second are the same story they just introduce more characters, and the third got a few new characters and a new final boss. This show covers the first two games.

Overall, I think it's quite good, but that comes from a fan of the games, if you are not into them you may not like that much.

Three rotoscoped short animations taking a look at mundane work days.
Slice-of-life done right. Stories that feel real, with real people in the real world. Something very missing in the genre.

There is nothing much else to say here, but as MAL requires us to be prolix about reviews and make walls of text in an exercise of futility for those who can't be concise or just like way too much reading themselves, here I go trying to reach the minimum 500 characters... not quite yet... wait for it... done!
