Toradora!'s ending is what it is. While the first viewing left me with an unquenchable emptiness inside me that made me borderline depressed for about a day and a half, I attributed that more to an amazing series ending. I think the ending is definitely up in the air, as I totally see how super abrupt it is. Leaves a lot to be desired, as well.
I see it more as as good an ending as it could've made to that point. Taiga's going out of her way to replenish her relationship with her mother so that she can have some sort of support system aside from Ryuuji and his mother, whom she'd become overly dependent on for most of the anime. Though I know she's also doing it for herself, so that she can learn to be capable of facing her past head-on. Perhaps an extra episode could've helped with the pacing and not have everything feel so squeezed in. I honestly thought the final scene where he runs up to the classroom and checks the corner closet was adorable. Would've preferred if she were to respond with genuine appreciation, but she's TSUNDERE LMAO. I'm satisfied with the way the ending is, but I acknowledge it could be better.
Also, if you were curious, if I were to watch Toradora! today without all the nostalgic personal bias, I'd probably give it an 8/10. Just so you know my 10/10 isn't completely subjective.
The low budget animation, the fact that it seriously tackles the subject of incestuous relationships rather than play it off as a joke (like every other rom com), an older main character who has the appearance of a slob and a snails pace all contribute to that score.
If Koi Kaze were more popular or if it handled itself in a trashy easy to criticize way you'd see way more negative reviews, but because it's so under the radar/handles its controversy with grace instead we see a ton of positive things from the few who felt impassioned enough by the series to speak on it.
