There is a trope in writing that's become more and more popular the past few years called "Haunting the narrative"
It's when a character's death acts as the catalyst for the events in the story. Not just starts them, but throughout the tale. their absence haunts the story beginning to end through the remaining characters memories or the echoes they left behind.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a clear example of this trope. And now that I've watched it, The Summer Hikaru Died.
While it is tagged horror and supernatural these stories always circle around grief and how we deal with it, the chances
...
we missed. Here it's compounded by the doppelganger effect, by something coming down from the mountain to take their place. Walking around with a big smile while wearing their face like a mask.
The BL under-tones are a bit cowardly but it can't be helped as "missed chance for love" is baked into this trope, kind wish they just went for it though.
It's a slow burn and the animation style a bit weird, lots of hard cuts and jumping animation to add a sense of eeriness to the scene.
Full disclosure, I hate this troupe and tend to avoid it... which is why I think this is a good show. I mean not only did I watch it but completed it and started with the manga. It's clearly doing something right and got me to care about the characters.

Another (re-incarnated in an otome game as a villainess) but with a twist.
The show starts with the now obligatory prince publicly breaking his engagement to the "villainess" in favor of AI generated heroine #872. This unlocks our lady's hidden powers as her story really begins.
In this case her powers is to simply beating he living daylights out of everyone that annoys her. It's a simple premise and really leans in to the violence with a healthy sense of humor.
It also comes with an interesting twist as the re-incarnated soul isn't the MC this time.
The art is nice, animation smooth and the
...
comedic timing is on point.
Now, this one does come with an asterisk. Four episodes in and the show is delivering HOWEVER it's lacking nuance. I mean, the prince & aristocrats act like thugs and openly discuss slavery and corruption. The show's answer to everything is to punch their lights out, which is cathartic (and funny) but not a real answer and doesn't give you much to get invest in.
The problem here is that the premise might be too simple and while it works for a quick joke I'm not sure the show has enough for a full season's worth.

Took until I saw Dr Stein (from Soul eater) to understand what's happening in this show.
So... this one is more of a word vomit than an actual show. The author sat down to write something original but ended up falling on tropes and his favorite characters got mixed in with his OCs.
When watching this I had this itch in the back of my brain telling me I've seen this character before. Stein, as well as Grell from Black butler, are probably the most obvious ones but you also have Sakuya who is practically transplanted from Nanbaka.
Premise here is over-complicated for no reason.
...
There are vampires, they have a master, they are servant vampires. Because Japan love hierarchy there are baby vamps under those as well. There is a lot of talk and specifics thrown in to complicate it but that's pretty much it. One of the vamps is our designated bad guy so we need to stop him, that's all.
Oh and because Soul Eater is clearly one of the "inspirations" here custom weapons are thrown in because why not.
You know those crappy one shots where the characters are suddenly in a situation and are given only one option to get out? Like getting locked in a room and not allowed out until XXX happens or something ridiculous like that? That's this show. Every few episodes the characters are cornered and are told they have to do this or that to get out of the situation. Because edgy they bust through the walls instead, in one case quite literally.
Trouble is each time new rules and restrictions are added for that to be the case, it's like this show never truly begins just always trying to establish the parameters of it's identity.
Overall I did like the lazy cat vamp but that's about it. The rest of the cast are so middle of the road all I can think of while they're on screen is try to identify which anime they were stolen from.

Promises, promises.
The inner monologue and flashbacks promise so much edge but they don't deliver. It comes off as teen angst honestly which is rather disappointing.
The show is on firmer grounds this season and the side characters are given more of a chance to show off. It does ring hollow though because in the end MC's crystal ball is still in effect. Also it does dip into stupid sometimes and some of of the sides break character when the plot needs it.
Also, again, the idea that individual achievement is a given but failure is to be highlighted and marked against the whole group
...
is very outdated and negative. I genuinely question the value of this special school when the only ones to have a guaranteed future are the Class A students. It means that any other class might as well have gone to a normal school since it offers the exact same chances.
Lots of speeches and monologues this season, characters that just spill out their backstory in tears out of the blue to the MC. I mean, it made sense in the previous season because he took his time with one of the characters until he got it out of her and it was for a purpose. In this one... it's because he's the MC and we need to move things along.
Oddly enough the artwork improved this season. But I'd say the story and plot took a hit. The ending was particularly sappy for something masquerading as edgy.

The plot thickens.
Well, more like actually start to take form. The show seems to have an identity crisis and can't decide if it's Battle Royale or danganronpa. Minus the style in both of course.
The show sends mixed messages. The "school" throws resources into the void at what seems like a last minute arranged challenge, normally fine for an anime but that suspension of disbelief bridge can only take so much. There needs to be a point or reason behind it not just... cuz...
Another issue is community vs individual. In two seasons the classes are always scored as a communal unit so
...
the core message seems to be work as a group, fine. But then you get "individual" scores that only have one single function for both seasons and that is = If an individual makes a mistake, the whole group will be penalized. Positives don't even count because they are expected, instead the show only highlights the mistakes.
This is... incredibly out-date. Even by Asian standards this is an old way of thinking.
I was so annoyed when one of the plot points was the school principle defending a student and saying "In this school we value our student's individuality". When?!?! Lip service when Plot?! Because in two seasons not once was individual success rewarded or highlighted.
A lot of this seasons is just schemes within schemes within schemes. All depending on the students having a crystal ball and predicting every single move another makes. It's smart sometimes, that's it's saving grace, but the assumptions made borderline on prophecy.
Also I don't understand the reasoning behind some of it. One character had a bullying problem in middle school and reinvented themselves for highschool. Fair enough that they want to keep the past behind them... until you realize they were the victim, why would someone degrade themselves to hide that let alone be shamed for it. What the?!

We have an idea here, I'm not sure it's fully formed yet but it's there.
Classroom of the elite is about a special school that produces Japan's next leaders. Succeed here and you can make it anywhere.
... except they won't tell you what the rules, parameters for success or failure, or what the point of it all actually is.
Almost like it's a soft system and the author doesn't want to commit to anything that might need to be retconned later. This, along with a sharp drop in art/animation towards the middle of the season, is usually enough of a reason to relegate the
...
series to the trash pile.
What keeps it interesting however is that this is an underdog story. Yes there is an OP MC in the mix but rather than get handed cheat coupons the solutions and last minute saves are actually smart. They are the underdog, they are getting picked on and they have nobody on their side. You want to cheer them on.
It's noticeable that either the production team or the author didn't have much faith in this series. Fan service is thrown in your face at odd points with the aim of keeping the viewer's attention. I actually wished they would stop and just focus on the story. The art isn't good enough to pull it off and it ends up creepy, more so when the show keeps reminding you that all the girls in this are minors. (why the attempted rape scene, I don't get why that forced in there!)
Overall I do think this is an interesting premise, just undercooked with rather bad art. It hits a low point around the middle where it starts throwing boobs on the screen to distract from that but... yeah it's noticeable. So, mixed bag it is but with potential.

In the anime/manga (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War) the concept is simple.
Two middle schoolers are too proud to confess so each is trying to trip the other because the first to confess "losses".
So take that concept, make it a couple waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy to meta and aware of the rom-com troupes to where this is aimed at the viewer not the other character. Congrats, you have this show. The dollar store Kaguya-sama.
You know what the sad part it is? It had potential. Don't get me wrong the show is trash and the jokes don't land 90% of the time. But then you get flashes of
...
what this could have been, it's that remaining 10%, and I wonder...
I hope the author finds their own voice some day, because this one just isn't it.

The Apocalypse has come and gone, as predicted the world ended not with a bang but a whimper as humanity deserted the planet.
In this empty world all that remains -functioning- is a gimmicky hotel in Ginza run exclusively by robots. And here is where our story begins and spans over 500 years as the robots and characters deal with the everyday tasks of the hospitality industry in unique conditions... oh and aliens visit.
This show is odd but in a good way. It has cozy vibes that contrast sharply with the premise and more often than not it goes so left field that you
...
wonder if they left the stadium.
This show is great and very different, every episode is entertaining and memorable (though I think the murder mystery one is my favorite!). The characters cute with Yachiyo being a gem and both the grounded AND agent of chaos character rolled into one adorable package.
A must watch, don't sleep on this one.

Our story begins with a guy literally NTRed to death. I'm not joking...
Anyway the "guide" offers him a second chance at an isekaied life, the catch here is that instead of a Tolkien setting we get a blend of sci-fi and magic.
Also the "guide" is in quotations for a reason. He is the best part of the show though, no scenery left unchewed!
Keep in mind, that's how the show starts. We still have to get to the title, him being an evil lord with mechs.
TLDR= This show has it's faults, loads of them. But it is entertaining and worth a watch.
I'm going
...
to be controversial here. This show, like our MC, had everything going against it!
- Isekaied middle aged salaryman that wants to re-do his youth, check.
- Generic sword and magic world, check but throw in the mechs!
- Women throwing themselves at him, check.
- The only men in the show are either elderly (aka not competition) or villians to be defeated, check.
POSITIVES, and the reason for the recommendation:-
Here's the thing. This show is fun, you're not always going to be sure where this is going and the jokes usually land. It's not a good a show but it is an entertaining one. Trashy but fun.
NEGATIVES, and the reason the score is low:-
- At times it's too dialogue heavy, this is all done on a still image on screen to save on the animation budget. This happens why too often and when it does goes on for ages which is just boring, more so because they're talking in circles to waste time.
- The plot comes off as a bit scattered and lacking focus.
- There is no love here. The premise of the show is "Everyone's against me" which is fine but the shows solution to this is, get good... I'm not joking. Everyone is against the MC because, just because. Nobody is supportive (to anyone not just the MC) nobody is even baseline social. They're your intrusive thoughts given a mouth and I mean that in the most negative way possible.
- The show doesn't end so much as stops a full episode after the big final battle which was really odd.
The show had potential however between the tight budget and the lack of highs to make up for really low lows I find it hard to give it a higher score. I would still recommend it as some bingeable trash though.

So... what just happened?
Was this a tax write off or something?
So, the show is about a village of immortal magical girls occupying part of the city. Our MC, a 43 year old salaryman suddenly transforms into one and is now stuck so moves in.
Each "episode" is exactly a minute long... that includes the intro song and credits by the way.
Keep that in mind, each episode is one minute only even with the inclusion of an opening song and the 4 seconds ed (yes, I checked).
so why do I feel bad after it? Like, this thing is so weird, off putting
...
and ugly that I have no words to even describe it to you. Each episode is like getting hit with psychic damage on all fronts.
The art = horrible
Animation = abysmal
Sound = the worst part, if you look at screenshots of this you'll see why this is an achievement!
Characters =... oh... my... GOD help me!
I feel traumatized. I think that was the point of the show, to just shock and confuse. Either that or it was an experiment of some kind, I just don't remember signing a waver when I watched it!
