People have a tendency to factor their own bias into the shows that they really like, and there's nothing wrong with that. I mean just look at the shows I have favorited, lol - I've given them all 5's because if you asked me what was one thing that was really memorable about the shows I wouldn't be able to give you a straight answer or maybe some generic answer or what not, haha. But yes, I completely agree with you when you mentioned that other people negatively overreact to negative reviews. At the end of the day it's just my opinion and I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I've got a lot of bashing for my Shokugeki review on both my wall and my PMs, surprisingly. Most of the times I just don't think they're right to make that kind of criticism. I mean I could totally bash on them for giving all the shows they watch 9's and 10's but I don't, lol. But there are plenty of people on the completely other side of the spectrum too who just want to politely discuss some show I've reviewed, which I really like and appreciate. Comments like those are too rare these days, to be honest.
I never understood why people attack the fan base for a certain show, lol. Ad hominem comments are just completely unnecessary. Just because someone doesn't see the show in the same way you do gives you no right to attack others. The best arguments, in my opinion, are those that back their points up well, and then it is up to the reader to agree/disagree with what they share. And that should be it, really.
(As a side note, I think the review that you pointed out was actually one of the first negative reviews on Shokugeki. I mean when I wrote my review at the time, all I saw was the show getting a bunch of praise and I didn't really agree with many of the other reviewers so thus I wrote my own bit.)
No worries :D if you want to discuss any other shows that you watched recently, I'd certainly be down! 42 shared shows is plenty to talk about.
And thank you, that's a compliment I don't receive too often :) I know my scores come off harsh sometimes to other people but that's only because I utilize the entire rating scale, haha. And for a series to get a 10 by my book, it certainly has to have a well-fleshed plot that is reasonably paced and not too obnoxiously difficult to follow. Characters have to be 3-Dimensional or become 3D characters through development. There's also "extra" factors that I look for that really needs to add impact and set the show above others that I've watched (and unfortunately humor usually does not make this grade). This includes a well fleshed theme that the story visits over and over again; satire, especially when it's done well; and well-incorporated literary elements, such as flashbacks, hero's journey, symbolism, etc. If I give a show a 8 or a 9, it usually has at least one of these "extra" factors, but it has issues elsewhere.
There's a lot more other "extra" factors that I can't remember off the top of my head but hopefully that gives you some picture of what I look for :D
Basically I prefer to watch one-cours/two-cours shows because I'm pretty restricted in time, that's all. :) I hope that kind of makes sense.
There's also oddball pieces of 'entertainment' which are actually not meant to be entertaining at all. Papers Please is monotonous and that's entirely the point of the game. There's stories about survival which tell about all sorts of awful things, but allow the reader/viewer to reconsider things about society or their own lives.
And that's perfectly fine if other people don't care about those things and only want to have FUUUUUUN~. I'm just not one of them. I think 'fun' can from thought and not just emotion, albeit in a very different form.
If I held myself back with the thought of "well, some people will still enjoy it regardless" every time I opened up Wordpad, there would be no reviews. I would have no opinions, have no discussions and never say anything of interest. I don't want that (though I know the people who dislike me would be happy to have me silenced), which is why I'll continue to focus on critical quality when writing reviews. I barely even mention my own enjoyment because I think a critique-- even a positive one-- goes much deeper than that. It can serve as the foundation of one of my praises or complaints, but "I enjoyed it" is not a phrase I think really says anything of interest. Why did you enjoy it? Why did it bother you? These are the questions that make a piece of writing unique and valuable to the reader. "I enjoyed it because Asuna is cute" or "I enjoyed it because the action scenes are badass" - not especially convincing if you put those words into a review.
Is it possible for someone to write a critical and positive review of SAO 2? Certainly. I've yet to see one and I can't think of any arguments they would come up with (if I could, it would have been in my own review in the first place), but it would be nice if one did appear at some point. Different opinions are good for everyone. I'm no bigot. I would just prefer people dig a bit deeper than erections and heart attacks.
Wow, I can also relate to you. I very, very rarely cry about real life matters since I was younger; until around eight or nine, I was very sensitive (outwardly). The time I cried in front of everyone, it made me feel pretty worthless so I closed up in one way or another. When I watch anime, it's like I get so deeply immersed and impacted by a world better than my own that I feel all that emotion, especially when the anime is a well made one.
I started watching anime when I stumbled upon something called "Cutting Edge on Demand" by my TV provider. Before then, I watched what I could find on TV, but didn't watch anything on the computer. I dived right in, with the first anime that I'd watched from start to finish being Sakurasou. I think that's why like it so much. Sakurasou is the first anime that introduced me to fanservice, romance, humor, and a good mix of everything.
As for ratings, how I rate anime is related to how much emotion I feel. The more anime I watch, the less I feel that satisfying overload of emotion, which doesn't make me happy... I'm hoping to watch a lot more anime and find out what I really like.
We're probably opposite when it comes to watching shows that get high recommendations. I'm definitely swayed by how good the reviews seem, but I eventually started to surf around this website so much that... well, I've stumbled upon some weird stuff! Anything that has barely any reviews, I watch. Anything that has low ratings... I watch. It's pretty weird, but I did that at first because I wanted to see what a "bad" anime really was so I wouldn't be as bias, and now I watch them merely for curiosity sake (and sometimes to write a review that gives a better opinion). I find enjoyment in just about any anime I watch, whether it's from laughing at it or something deeper, and even if I give it a low rating, I can always find something redeeming.
Well, nice to meet you. I hope we can talk about anime or anything else sometime.
