1st review, let's try this out.
Ecchi harems can feel a bit stale with overused tropes and formulaic execution. This, combined with the abundance of them in the market, can make it difficult to distinguish one from another. Burst isn't much different from most in that regard, but it is a lot of fun to watch the train wreck.
The ecchi in this show isn't the most unique but it should be respected for its voracity. The no holds barred action in conjunction with the solid voice work gives it a strong sensuality and sexy atmosphere. The girls themselves are stereotypical and unimpressive, but not unlikable. You'll find
yourself smiling at their sexual openness, which is appreciated in a genre where sexual tension is palpable and rarely acted upon. By far, the ecchi fanservice is the highlight of Burst.
Now as for the rest...
The story centers around Basara and his harem's antics in the demon realm. Two rival demon factions vying for control drag Mio into their dispute and her presence is requested. Basara and his "sisters" go with her to support her of course and the shenanigans ensue. Oh, but prior to this, Basara fights an angel in school but loses control of himself, before ultimately being saved by the buxom Chisato sensei. Oh, but prior to that, Jin Toujou (father) has a fight with Leohart, the current young demon lord. If you haven't seen an issue yet, you will if you watch it. The story is very rushed and almost an exact copy paste of another anime. The switch between serious story and ecchi fanservice galore is unpleasant to watch. It comes across as horribly forced and terribly executed. One minute Basara and harem are engaged in a battle to the death, 5 minutes later he's fondling breasts and having an orgy. With a weak story to begin with, this only serves to undermine the plot and annoy the viewer.
The characters are a dime a dozen clones you see in similar anime but there are some bright spots. Jin, Lars, Ramsus, and Chisato provide a welcome change of pace at points. The OSTs are pretty generic and the animation is nothing to write home about.
Overall, this isn't a good anime if you expect something well written and original. Mindless fun and a guilty pleasure though, that it can be.
